  • This study presents the influence of blasting-induced vibration on the adjacent structures in rocks of various RMR values. 3D finite element analysis was performed to simulate the behaviour of tunnel and adjacent structures during rock excavation. The blast loadings were evaluated from the blasting pressure which is depending on the type and amount of explosive charges. Influencing factors for the stability of adjacent structures and ground conditions were reviewed in terms of structural dimensions and RMR values. The stiffness and load of adjacent structures are modeled in the numerical analysis to Investigate blasting effects of the size of adjacent structures. The vibration velocity and maximum particle velocity was increase sharply when the RMR value changed from 30 to 50. The effect of particle velocity was minimized at the width of structure become 2 times of tunnel diameter.

  • Ground settlements and pore pressure changes were monitored around a shallow tunnel constructed in clay till during the excavation and primary lining installation. The settlements above the tunnel continued to develop for up to 100 days after the primary lining installation. Triaxial compression tests were carried out to estimate the short-term and long-term deformation characteristics of the till. Numerical simulation was conducted to history match the field measurements, and thus, to quantify the settlements induced by ground stress relief, consolidation and creep. It was found that the surface settlements due to ground stress relief, consolidation and creep are 17, 12 and 71% of total settlement (about 44 mm), respectively. In addition, early installation of rigid concrete lining could be an effective means to reduce the settlement due to creep.

  • We designed the hot wind tunnel to reproduce the conditions of utility boiler and carried out its performance test, in order to investigate the particulate two-phase flow behaviour, the fouling and heat transfer characteristics to the heat exchanger. The hot wind tunnel introduces the control system to control the temperature in the test section. The particle is injected into the hot gas stream. The fouling probe (cylindrical tube) is positioned normal to the particulate gas-particle two-phase flow and cooled by the air. The temperature of gas and cooling air, and temperature in the fouling probe are measured as a function of time, giving the local and averaged heat transfer and fouling factor. The shape of particulate deposition adhered to the fouling probe is also observed.

  • Recently, twin-tunnel is often designed considering the aspects of disaster prevention and economic reasons. However, the design cases and the studies are relatively insufficient. By the twin-tunnel excavation, deviate stresses of pillar between tunnels are increased and the increased stresses induce the instability of the twin-tunnel. In this study, numerical analyses about the twin-tunnel behaviour are conducted while varying ground strength, width of pillar and depth of earth cover and a series of regression analyses are carried out by using the results of numerical analyses for the twin-tunnel. Based on the numerical analyses, an estimation method of derived stresses is suggested though the regression analyses. Also, based on the results of regression analyses, an quantitative estimation method considering the reinforcement effects is also suggested. Then various parametric studies are conducted to be considered the reinforcement type and various design parameters. Finally, the efficiency of the suggested method is verified through the results of parametric studies.

  • Weathering is defined as a process by which surface rock, once formed in the deep ground, is broken down and altered to keep the equilibrium with the ambient environment. In this study granitic rock samples of different weathering grades were collected in the field and the microscopic observation, X-ray diffraction analysis, electron microscopic observation, chemical analysis, and rock property tests were carried out. Formation of secondary minerals, especially clay minerals, by weathering was identified and the mechanism for the change of engineering properties such as rock strength degradation was analyzed. Tunnel model test, Failure behaviour, Shallow tunnel, Unsupproted tunnel length.

  • In this paper, we have studied the expected problems when tunnel is excavated under the wetland, and described the measure to maintain the wetland's ecosystem environment. Firstly, we investigated the wetland's ecosystem such as plants and animals, and executed ground investigation including in-situ tests and geophysical survey. And we analyzed the foreign similar cases for tunnel excavation near the wetland. We also evaluated the runoff and infiltration quantity of groundwater and hydraulic behaviour of rock mass and wetland by numerical analysis. Finally, we established the effective measure to minimize the ecosystem's influence by tunnel excavation.

  • Tunnels are widely used for special purposes including roads, railways and culvert for power transmission, etc. Its cross-section shape is determined by uses, ground condition, environmental or economic factor. Many papers with respect to behaviours of adjacent ground and existing structure tunnelling-induced have been published by many researchers, but tunnel cross-section have rarely been considered. A collapse of tunnel causes vaster human and property damage than structures on the ground. Thus, it is very important to understand and analyse the relationship between behavoiurs of ground and cross-section type of tunnel. In this study, the behaviour of ground due to tunnel excavation for underground station below the grouped pile supported existing structure was analysed through laboratory model test using a trap-door device. Not only two cross-section types, 2-arch and box, as station for tunnel, but also, offset between tunnel and grouped pile centre (0.1B, 0.25B, 0.4B) are considered as variable of this study. In order to measure underground deformation tunnelling-induced, Close Range Photogrammetry technique was applied with laboratory model test, and results are compared to numerical analysis.

  • Three-dimensional (3D) numerical analyses have been performed to study the behaviour of single piles and grouped piles to adjacent tunnelling in the lateral direction of the pile. In the numerical analyses, the interaction between the tunnel, the pile and the soil next to the piles and shear transfer mechanism have been analysed allowing soil slip at the pile-soil interface by using interface elements. The study includes the shear stresses at the soil next to the pile, the axial force distributions on the pile and the pile settlement. It has been found that existing elastic solutions may not accurately estimate the pile behaviour since several key issues are excluded. Due to changes in the shear transfer between the pile and the soil next to the pile with tunnel advancement, the shear stresses and axial force distributions along the pile change drastically. Downward shear stress develops above the tunnel springline while upward shear stress is mobilised below the tunnel springline, resulting in a compressive force on the pile. In addition, mobilisation of shear strength at the pile-soil interface was found to be a key factor governing pile-soil-tunnelling interaction. It has been found that grouped piles are less influenced by the tunnelling than the single pile in terms of the axial pile forces. The reduction of apparent allowable pile capacity due to pile settlement resulted from the tunnelling seemed to be insignificant.

  • Most tunnel lining material which has been used in the domestic is a concrete. But many problems as the construction period, the cost, and the crack occurrence for the design, construction, and management were happened in the concrete lining. For this reason, many research institutes like the Korea Highway Corporation recognize the necessity of an alternate material development and grow on the interest for that. So in this study, the behaviour characteristics for the application of the Corrugated Steel Plate Lining in cut-and-cover tunnel are evaluated as several conditions for the backfill height, the cutting slope, and the relative density of backfill soil are changed. In addition, through using that conditions, CHBDC(2000, Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code) is evaluated if it could be applied to the design by comparing with the numerical analysis results. As the behaviour characteristics of the Corrugated Steel Plate Lining by CHBDC and the static numerical analysis are analyzed, both the methods show the same linear increases of the compressive stress according to the increase of the backfill height. The CHBDC of the dead load condition has very similar tendency by comparing with the result of the static numerical analysis.

But many problems as the construction period, the cost, and the crack occurrence for the design, construction, and management were happened in the concrete lining. For this reason, many research institutes like the Korea Highway Corporation recognize the necessity of an alternate material development and grow on the interest for that. So in this study, the seismic behaviour characteristics for the application of the Corrugated Steel Plate Lining in cut-and-cover tunnel are evaluated as several conditions for the backfill height, the cutting slope, and the relative density of backfill soil are changed. The compressive stress which is calculated in the Corrugated Steel Plate Lining by the seismic load is decreased as the backfill height increases and the cut slope grows gentle. Also, the moment shows the tendency of decrease according to the increase of the backfill height. But in the case of the relative density of the backfill soil is small, the moment increases according to the increase of the backfill height and affects the dynamic behaviour characteristic. So it is considered that the relative density of the backfill soil is also the important point. As the result in analyzing the seismic response characteristics of the reinforcement spacing of the Corrugated Steel Plate, the variation in the compressive force is hardly happened, but the moment and the shear force increase on the reinforcement spacing being narrow.
