  • This project was conducted using a survey method and through interviewing with four persons aged 60 years and over. An interview with an open-ended questionnaire was also used for elderly persons, families, oriental medicine doctor and nurses. topic-related literature review was also done. In total, 382 statements were derived. For content validity, nursing professionals were involved in this study, From that 48 items are developed. The subjects were 340 elderly persons over 60 years old. Data were collected duicing February and March 1997 and analyzed using the SPSS package The result are as follows. 1. Items with low Cronbach Coefficient alpha which means low correlation with total items were removed. 2. Factor analysis was done in order to confirm construct validity and eight factors were obtained from the results. The first factor, 'positive cognition of the aging process', the second factor, 'relationship network' the third factor, 'maintanence of physical functioning, the fourth factor', 'maintanence of peaceful mind' the fifth factor, 'keeping up with daily tasks' the sixth factor, 'continuous adequate body movement' the seventh factor,'involvement of religion in the elderly person's life and the eight factor', 'appropriate resting'. Cronbach Coefficient alpha for the 33 items was .9127 Based on the result, the following is suggested 1. It is anrticipated that the fundamental health of elderly person could be promoted by assessing healthy behaviors of elderly person with this assessment tool. 2. Further studies could be derived from this research. 3. Validity of this assessment tool should be further tested with and a larger sample of elderly person including in-patient elderly persons as well as nursing home residents.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the recognition of the educators in preschool education institutions on children's oral health promotion. Methods : The subjects of this study included 918 preschool teachers who have been performing an oral health education program for children at preschool centers in Seoul. For this study, the survey was conducted from September 2008 to November 2008 through a questionnaire. Results : It has been found that 58.5% of the given preschool institutions have implemented an oral health promotion program and 99.1% of the respondents recognized the importance of the oral health. 53.9% of the respondents used sweets as a reward for good deeds. Regarding the behaviors of oral health promotion, the daily tooth-brushing and the implementation of a regular oral check-up accounted for 69.0% and 59.5% respectively. The subjects recognized that they have responsibility for the tooth-brushing instruction(91.6%) and provision of an oral inspection(78.3%). It has been also found that the case of performing the oral health program with older age and higher work experiences was significantly high(p<0.05). Conclusions : The recognition and performance of kindergarten teachers on children's oral health affects daily life and healthful living habits of children. Therefore oral health education program for the teachers has to be developed.

  • Since the Discussion on responsible tourism sector began in the 1980s, the interest in responsible tourism has increased. Responsible tourism aims to preserve the local culture and environment, and make the benefits return benefits to local stakeholders. This study aims to obtain an empirical understanding of the responsible tourism market by using a segmentation approach to provide better information for responsible tourism marketers in Korea. A self-administered survey was obtained from 471 tourists in seven responsible tourism sites. As for the motivations of responsible tourism, seven factors ('faimly togetherness', 'escape relaxation', 'personal growth', 'social interaction', 'various experience', 'learning' and 'natural experience') were extracted. Six distinct segments were identified based on the motivation: escape from daily life relaxation seekers (19.15%), overall low motivation (7.8%), family togetherness seekers (21.18%). various experience seekers (12.77%), noverlty learning seekers (22.46%) and want-it-all (16.55%). Socio-demographic characteristics and tourism behaviors of each segmentation were also analyzed. The findings should be of interest to practitioners of responsible tourism marketing and operation.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between self-rated health and Activity of Daily Living (ADL) and self-care behavior of rural elderly in Korea, focused on the difference among three distinctive living arrangements; living alone, living only with his/her spouse, and living with their married children. For this purpose, data were gathered from a nationwide survey, a total of 586 elderly aged 65 or older and living in rural area, using the structured questionnaire. Also, self-care behavior were categorized into 4 groups; life-style practice, medical self-care, adaption to functional limitation, and emotional management. The major findings are as follows; 1) Rural elderly perceived their health little and more 'bad' but their ADL capacity were 'not difficult', especially among elderly living with spouse. 2) The level of 20 items in self-care behavior ($1{\sim}5$score) was ranged from 2.51 to 3.81 score. The behavior level of regular exercise, setting up additional phone, taking a nutrient, and testing BP or pulse regularly were low but that of taking a medicine according to prescription, close contact with other people, and regular eating were proportionally high. 3) The majority of self-care behavior were correlated with subjective health positively but medical self-care behavior were correlated with subjective health or ADL negatively. Based on these results, policy implications are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the lift-style and eating behavior of stomach cancer patients in the Daegu and Kyungpook area, and to collect basic data for nutrition education designed to prevent stomach cancer in this community. The subjects of the study were 102 patients who were recently diagnosed as having stomach cancer at the Kyungpook National University Hospital. The control subjects were 105 persons who did not have any gastrointestinal disease, and included patients from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and healthy volunteers. The survey, which covered the personal characteristics and eating behavior of the subjects, was conducted by individual interviews using questionnaires. It was found that the stomach cancer patients (case group) had experienced a significantly higher level of stress in their daily lives than the control group. A significantly higher proportion of the case group subjects recognized their personality as pessimistic, and had family histories of cancer, compared with the control group subjects. The cancer patients had higher preferences for salty and hot tasting foods, and tended to ingest meals faster without enough chewing, compared with the control subjects. The level of nutritional knowledge of the case group was lower than the control group, and there was a positive correlation between subjects' nutritional knowledge scores and nutritional attitude scores. Subjects' estimates of their food intake frequencies during the decade before the cancer was diagnosed revealed that the case group consumed significantly higher amounts of pickled fish, soybean paste soup and stew, cooked vegetables, beef and pork, charcoal broiled meat and alcohol, while consuming significantly lower amounts of green tea than the control group. In summary, the results of the study suggest that the stress of daily life, a family history of cancer, and a pessimistic personality might be the risk factors for the development of stomach cancer. Dietary factors which were suspected as risk factors for stomach cancer in the present study included strong preferences to salty and hot lasting foods, poor eating habits, and frequent consumption of pickled fish, soybean paste soup, cooked vegetables, beef and pork, charcoal broiled meat and alcohol. A high consumption of green tea seemed to be a protective factor against stomach cancer. The results of the study appear to provide useful data for nutritional education focussed on the prevention on stomach rancor in local residents.

  • A useful application of smart assistants is to predict and suggest users' daily behaviors the way real assistants do. Conventional methods to predict behavior have mainly used explicit schedule information logged by a user or extracted from e-mail or SNS data. However, gathering explicit information for smart assistants has limitations, and much of a user's routine behavior is not logged in the first place. In this paper, we suggest a novel approach that combines explicit schedule information with patterns of routine behavior. We propose using inference based on a Markov decision process and learning with a reward function based on inverse reinforcement learning. The results of our experiment shows that the proposed method outperforms comparable models on a life-log dataset collected over six weeks.

  • The aims of this study were 1) to compare irrational gambling beliefs of gamblers and non-gamblers, 2) to investigate the role of cognitive error on winning probability thinking error, and 3) to examine the relationship between attributional bias and gambling behavior. A total of 248 subjects were recruited for this study. All subjects were classified into non-gamblers, social gamblers and pathological gamblers, and administered self-report questionnaires to measure irrational gambling beliefs, the probability inference error, the attriburional style, and the attributional bias. A pathological gambler group scored highest on irrational gambling beliefs, especially the overestimation of self-ability factor, and a social gambler group and a non-gambler group follow. All three groups scored higher on the magnification of gambling skills than the mean (4.0) of the scale. Pathological gamblers and social gamblers scored higher on the probability thinking error than non-gamblers. Pathological gamblers displayed higher external attribution, lower internal attribution in their daily life events and higher internal attribution in failure situation than social gamblers and non-gamblers. The results indicate that cognitive errors would be a factor that differentiates pathological gamblers from social gamblers and non-gamblers. In predicting gambling behaviors, overestimation of self-ability of irrational gambling beliefs, internal attribution in failure situation, external attribution in daily live event, and probability thinking error were identified as significant factors. It is concluded that a public education about common cognitive bias featured in gamblers might be important in prevention of pathological gambling behaviors.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the dietary habits and nutritional knowledge of 5th and 6th graders and the teachers' perception of dietary life education at the elementary schools in Chuncheon area. The children who had breakfast and supper everyday accounted for 54.1% and 80.3% each. Children consumed 'breads or confectioneries'(42.6%) and 'fruits or juices'(39.3) as snacks. Only 57.4% of the children had balanced diet. Only 59% of the children answered correctly at the nutritional knowledge test, and only 75% had good dietary behaviors. About 78% of the teachers had the experiences of dietary life education, and they taught it in class(38.9%) or at school lunchtime(35.2%). The teachers answered that the major nutrition problems of elementary students were bad eating habits(37.7%) and too much ingestion of fast or instant foods(36.2%). They also answered that dietary life education was necessary(79.7%) and should be started more earlier(87.0%). Ironically, about 49% of the teachers answered that dietary life education should be taught by dietitians even if the teacher who spent most of the time with their students is the best person for dietary life education at school. It should be done in children's daily life, especially for elementary school students. Therefore, teachers should recognize the importance and the specialty of dietary life education at the elementary schools.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the status of dietary behavior and its association with study-related factors in middle school students. Methods: Study-related factors, dietary habit score and dietary behaviors were surveyed by questionnaire and then analyzed. A total of 580 students in some middle schools in Gyeonggi-do participated in this study. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS for windows Ver. 22.0. Results: 71.3% of the subjects slept for 6 ~ 8 hours, and the studying time outside of school was the highest (2 ~ 4 hours). The highest score for stress from studying by private lessons or academies was 'seldom stressed', with higher stress being observed in male students than female students. The average dietary habit score was 3.69 in male students and 3.62 in female students. The highest average time for meal eating was 10 ~ 20 minutes, with shorter times being observed for male students than female students. Eating meals was regular in most students and the highest number of snack eating was 1 ~ 2 times a day. For dietary behaviors by study-related factors, students with more than 2 hours of studying time outside of school showed higher dietary habit scores than those with less than 2 hours, who showed significantly higher rates of eating 2 meals a day. As the sleeping hours and daily average studying hours increased, the rate of regular meal eating increased significantly. Conclusion: The students showed good, above average dietary behaviors, but gender differences in study-related factors and dietary behaviors. Moreover, the sleeping hours and the studying time outside of school were correlated with dietary habit scores and dietary behaviors. Thus, continuous and systematic education for proper dietary behavior is needed along with greater interest in students with problems of study-related factors, particularly those due to study burden.

  • Purpose: Patients experiencing chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) apply various palliative care as well as drugs in their daily life to alleviate symptoms. There is a need to identify the influence of these efforts and patients' psychosocial status on the relief of CIPN symptoms. This short-term prospective study investigated how prescription drugs, non-pharmacological behaviors (exercise, massage, and heat therapy), and psychological states (social support, depression, and anxiety) affected CIPN symptoms. Methods: Participants scheduled to receive postoperative platinum or taxane-based chemotherapy were enrolled consecutively. CIPN was measured with the Neurotoxicity-12 subscale of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy/Gynecologic Oncology Group-Neurotoxicity-12 instrument. Data were collected three times during the 4 or 5 cycles of chemotherapy. Results: At the end of the 2nd chemotherapy cycle, 93.1% of participants reported CIPN symptoms. Multiple regression analyses showed that a heat therapy (β= -.34, p< .001), massage (β= -.21, p= .012), and walking 5 times or more per week (β= -.26, p= .021) provided relieve for CIPN symptoms. Depression (β= .19, p= .027) significantly exacerbated CIPN symptoms. Conclusion: These results suggested that a comprehensive management program that includes walking, heat therapy, massage, and mood therapy should be encouraged. Moreover, patients should be educated at chemotherapy initiation to understand appropriate interventions that can relieve CIPN symptoms.
