Purpose: To investigate the clinical characteristics of late-onset epilepsy combined with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and the relationship between certain types of electroencephalography (EEG) abnormalities in ASD and associated neuropsychological problems. Methods: Thirty patients diagnosed with ASD in early childhood and later developed clinical seizures were reviewed retrospectively. First, the clinical characteristics, language and behavioral regression, and EEG findings of these late-onset epilepsy patients with ASD were investigated. The patients were then classified into 2 groups according to the severity of the EEG abnormalities in the background rhythm and paroxysmal discharges. In the severe group, EEG showed persistent asymmetry, slow and disorganized background rhythms, and continuous sharp and slow waves during slow sleep (CSWS). Results: Between the two groups, there was no statistically significant difference in mean age (P=0.259), age of epilepsy diagnosis (P=0.237), associated family history (P=0.074), and positive abnormal magnetic resonance image (MRI) findings (P=0.084). The severe EEG group tended to have more neuropsychological problems (P=0.074). The severe group statistically showed more electrographic seizures in EEG (P=0.000). Rett syndrome was correlated with more severe EEG abnormalities (P=0.002). Although formal cognitive function tests were not performed, the parents reported an improvement in neuropsychological function on the follow up checkup according to a parent's questionnaire. Conclusion: Although some ASD patients with late-onset epilepsy showed severe EEG abnormalities, including CSWS, they generally showed an improvement in EEG and clinical symptoms in the longterm follow up. In addition, severe EEG abnormalities tended to be related to the neuropsychological function.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders in childhood. This disorder, in addition to its main symptoms, creates significant difficulties in education, social performance, and personal relationships. Given the importance of rehabilitation for these patients to combat the above issues, the use of virtual reality (VR) technology is helpful. The aim of this study was to highlight the opportunities for VR in the rehabilitation of children with ADHD. This narrative review was conducted by searching for articles in scientific databases and e-Journals, using keywords including VR, children, and ADHD. Various studies have shown that VR capabilities in the rehabilitation of children with ADHD include providing flexibility in accordance with the patients' requirements; removing distractions and creating an effective and safe environment away from real-life dangers; saving time and money; increasing patients' incentives based on their interests; providing suitable tools to perform different behavioral tests and increase ecological validity; facilitating better understanding of individuals' cognitive deficits and improving them; helping therapists with accurate diagnosis, assessment, and rehabilitation; and improving working memory, executive function, and cognitive processes such as attention in these children. Rehabilitation of children with ADHD is based on behavior and physical patterns and is thus suitable for VR interventions. This technology, by simulating and providing a virtual environment for diagnosis, training, monitoring, assessment and treatment, is effective in providing optimal rehabilitation of children with ADHD.
Purpose : To identify the correlation between CBS and pencil and paper test, and to test the sensitivity of above tests about unilateral neglect. Mostly used tool of pencil and paper test is line bisection and albert test. CBS is behavioral neglect test. Methods : The subjects of study were 44 stroke patients with left hemiplegia. Data were analyzed for Pearson correlation, paired t-test and ANOVA using SPSS program. The significance level was ${\alpha}<.01$. Results : The results of the study was as follow: 1. CBS had a significant correlation of line bisection and Albert test. 2. CBS was more sensitive than the pencil and paper in unilateral neglect. 3. CBS had high correlations with ADL than the pencil and paper test. Conclusion : The result showed that CBS was more useful than a pencil and paper test to distinguish unilateral neglect and available to diagnose anosognosia. Therefore, it should be considered applying CBS to inspect and cure unilateral neglect.
Background: Neuromodulation therapy has been used to an adjunctive treatment promoting motor recovery in stroke patients. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on neurobehavioral recovery and evoked potentials in rats with middle cerebral artery occlusion. Methods: Seventy Sprague-Daley rats were induced permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) stroke model and successful stroke rats (n=56) assigned to the rTMS (n=28) and sham (n=28) group. The 10 Hz, high frequency rTMS gave on ipsilesional forepaw motor cortex during 2 weeks in rTMS group. The somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) and motor evoked potential (MEP) were used to evaluate the electrophysiological changes. Behavioral function of the stroke rat was evaluated by the Rota rod and Garcia test. Results: Forty rats ($N_{rTMS}=20;\;N_{sham}=20$) completed all experimental course. The rTMS group showed better performance than sham group in Rota rod test and Garcia test at day 11 (p<0.05) but not day 18 (p>0.05). The amplitude of MEP and SSEP in rTMS group was larger than sham group at day 18 (p<0.05). Conclusions: These data confirm that the high frequency rTMS on ipsilesional cerebral motor cortex can help the early recovery of motor performance in permanent middle cerebral artery stroke model and it may simultaneously associate with changes in neurophysiological activity in brain.

The purpose of this study was to investigate factors associated with coping responses in Korean public high school students. Methods: This study employed a descriptive survey research design. The sample included 263 high school students who responded to a self-report questionnaire. Variables included socio-demographic characteristics, health-related characteristics, academic stress, somatization symptoms, social support, and coping responses. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson's correlations, and multiple regressions. Results: Participants, regarding their school life, reported moderate levels of academic stress ($M{\pm}SD=2.3{\pm}0.52$) and somatization symptoms ($M{\pm}SD=2.3{\pm}0.71$), and a relatively high level of social support ($M{\pm}SD=4.2{\pm}0.67$). All the variables were associated with the use of multiple coping responses. Active-cognitive coping ($M{\pm}SD=2.9{\pm}0.68$) was most frequently used, followed by active-behavioral coping ($M{\pm}SD=2.5{\pm}0.56$). and avoidant coping ($M{\pm}SD=2.3{\pm}0.75$). Significant relationships were found among the measured variables: positive relation between academic stress and somatization symptoms, but, negative between academic stress and both somatization symptoms and social support. Students who had higher stress and more somatization symptoms were more likely to use avoidant coping than the others. In multiple regression analysis, while factors associated with each coping response differed, gender appeared to be a significant factor in all methods. Variables included in the final model explained 27% of the variance in avoidant coping (F=11.40, p<.001). Conclusion: Based on the study results, schools should provide tailored educational programs to help high school students reduce multisource stress and somatization symptoms at school and cope with them in more active and effective ways.

Objectives: The objective of the study was to prepare Bauhinia variegata loaded nanoemulsion(formulation and determine the efficacy of herbal drug formulation against diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain through acupuncture technique. Methods: Nine different ba tches of nanoemulsion (NE1 NE9) of BVN was prepared by varying the Smix ratio and the concentration of oil. BVN was characterized to determine particle size, shape, zeta potential, polydispersity index, optical transmittance, drug release profile and stora ge stability. The optimized formulation was subjected to plantar test, behavioral tests of neuropathic pain and Von Frey filament stimulation test. Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of freshly prepared solution of Streptozotocin (60 mg/kg) to the experimental rats. Animals were made diabetic divided into four groups, Group I was untreated normal control group, Group II was diabetic control group, Group III was Bauhinia variegata extract ( treated group (100 mg/kg/day, p.o) and Group IV was BVN treated groups (100 mg/kg/day, p.o) acute and chronically. Results: The prepared B. variegata loaded nanoemulsion was nanosized (124 nm), spherical, uniform and stable over the period of 180 days with no change in physiochemical properties. The bl ood glucose and body weight of animals was normalizing after four weeks of treatment that was significant with BVN in comparison to diabetic control group. The chronic administration of BVN significantly (P<0.001) decreased hind paw withdrawal latency an d attenuated mechanical allodynia as compared with diabetic rats. Conclusion: Thus, BVN may be an effective drug formulation against diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain.

This paper introduces a scheme for optimizing the material properties of mass-spring systems of different resolutions to provide coherent behavior for reduced level-of-detail in MSS(Mass-Spring System) meshes. The global optimal material coefficients are derived to match the behavior of provided reference mesh. The proposed method also gives us insight into levels of reduction that we can achieve in the systematic behavioral coherency among the different resolution of MSS meshes. We obtain visually acceptable coherent behaviors for cloth models based on our proposed error metric and identify that this method can significantly reduce the resolution levels of simulated objects. In addition, we have confirmed coherent behaviors with different resolutions through various experimental validation tests. We analyzed spring force estimations through triangular Barycentric coordinates based from the reference MSS that uses a Gaussian kernel based distribution. Experimental results show that the displacement difference ratio of the node positions is less than 10% even if the number of nodes of $MSS^{sim}$ decreases by more than 50% compared with $MSS^{ref}$. Therefore, we believe that it can be applied to various fields that are requiring the real-time simulation technology such as VR, AR, surgical simulation, mobile game, and numerous other application domains.

Over the past decade, we have witnessed Serious Debates in MISQ and Other Journals Between Two Camps that have Differing Views on the use of Causal Indicators to Measure Constructs. There is the Camp that advocates Causal Indicators (ADVOCATE) and the Camp that opposes Their Usage (OPPONENT). The Debates have been primarily centered on the OPPONENT's Argument that the Meaning of a Latent Variable is determined by its Outcome Variables. However, Little Effort has been made to Validate the ADVOCATE's Dispute (Against the OPPONENT's Arguments) that the Meaning of a Latent Variable is decided by its Causal Indicators if there is no Misspecification. Our Study precisely examines the Integrity of the Argument. For this, we empirically examine how the two Primary Psychometric Properties-Comprehensiveness and Interrelationship-of Causal Indicators Influence Theory Testing between Latent Variables through Three Different Tests (i.e., Comprehensive Test, Interrelationship Test, and Mixed Test). Conducted on Two Different Datasets, Our Analysis Consistently Reveals that Structural Path Coefficients are Hardly Sensitive to the Changes (i.e., Misspecification) in the Properties of Causal Indicators. The Discovery offers Important Evidence that the Sound Theoretical Logic of a Causal Model is not in Sync with the Empirical Mechanism of Parameter Estimation. This Underscores that a Latent Variable Formed by Causal Indicators is empirically an elusive notion that is Difficult to Operationalize. As Our Results have Significant Implications on the Integrity of Numerous IS studies which have conducted Theory or Hypothesis Testing Using Causal Indicators, we strongly advocate Open Discussions among Methodologists regarding Our Findings and Their Implications for Both Published IS Research and Future Practices.
Background: Neuropathic pain is a chronic pain due to disorder in the peripheral or central nervous system with different pathophysiological mechanisms. Current treatments are not effective. Analgesic drugs combined can reduce pain intensity and side effects. Here, we studied the analgesic effect of nimesulide, nefopam, and morphine with different mechanisms of action alone and in combination with other drugs in chronic constriction injury (CCI) model of neuropathic pain. Methods: Male Wistar rats (n = 8) weighing 150-200 g were divided into 3 different groups: 1- Saline-treated CCI group, 2- Saline-treated sham group, and 3- Drug-treated CCI groups. Nimesulide (1.25, 2.5, and 5 mg/kg), nefopam (10, 20, and 30 mg/kg), and morphine (1, 3, and 5 mg/kg) were injected 30 minutes before surgery and continued daily to day 14 post-ligation. In the combination strategy, a nonanalgesic dose of drugs was used in combination such as nefopam + morphine, nefopam + nimesulide, and nimesulide + morphine. Von Frey filaments for mechanical allodynia and acetone test for cold allodynia were, respectively, used as pain behavioral tests. Experiments were performed on day 0 (before surgery) and days 1, 3, 5, 7,10, and 14 post injury. Results: Nefopam (30 mg/kg) and nimesulide (5 mg/kg) blocked mechanical and thermal allodynia; the analgesic effects of morphine (5 mg/kg) lasted for 7 days. Allodynia was completely inhibited in combination with nonanalgesic doses of nefopam (10 mg/kg), nimesulide (1.25 mg/kg), and morphine (3 mg/kg). Conclusions: It seems that analgesic drugs used in combination, could effectively reduce pain behavior with reduced adverse effects.
Background: Neuropathic pain is generally defined as a chronic pain state resulting from peripheral and/or central nerve injury. There is a lack of effective treatment for neuropathic pain, which may possibly be related to poor understanding of pathological mechanisms at the molecular level. Curcumin, a therapeutic herbal extract, has shown to be effectively capable of reducing chronic pain induced by peripheral administration of inflammatory agents such as formalin. In this study, we aimed to show the effect of curcumin on pain behavior and serum COX-2 level in a Chronic Constriction Injury (CCI) model of neuropathic pain. Methods: Wistar male rats (150-200 g, n = 8) were divided into three groups: CCI vehicle-treated, sham-operated, and CCI drug-treated group. Curcumin (12.5, 25, 50 mg/kg, IP) was injected 24 h before surgery and continued daily for 7 days post-surgery. Behavioral tests were performed once before and following the days 1, 3, 5, 7 after surgery. The serum COX-2 level was measured on day 7 after the surgery. Results: Curcumin (50 mg/kg) decreased mechanical and cold allodynia (P < 0.001) and produced a decline in serum COX-2 level (P < 0.001). Conclusions: A considerable decline in pain behavior and serum COX-2 levels was seen in rat following administration of curcumin in CCI model of neuropathic pain. High concentration of Curcumin was able to reduce the chronic neuropathic pain induced by CCI model and the serum level of COX-2.
