Obesity is caused by the accumulation of triglycerides in adipocytes by the differentiation and lipid synthesis process of pre-adipocytes, and excessive accumulation of adipocytes by the activated Adipogenesis process within the differentiated cells. Therefore, inhibiting the differentiation of adipocyte cells or controlling the adipogenesis process is known as an effective treatment method for obesity. This study evaluates the inhibition of Red beet root extract on pancreatic lipase and pre-adipocyte cell differentiation. Also it evaluates the Red beet root extract activities on C/EBP-𝛼,𝛽, and PPAR-𝛄. The experiments proved that the Red beet root extract inhibits pancreatic lipase by concentration dependency. Further, in 3T3-L1 inhabitation experiment, it was found Red beet root extract inhibited adipocyte formation. Red beet root extract also inhibits the expression of C/EBP-𝛼, C/EBP-𝛽, and PPAR-𝛾 which effect the process of adipocytic differentiation. We therefore concluded that RBE has a high potential to further studies on anti-obesity effect.

Quality characteristics of lotus root pickle added with beet water extract were investigated. Lotus root slices were salted with NaCl, soaked into pickling solution, and then stored at $20^{\circ}C$. Throughout the whole storage periods, pH, acidity, saltiness of pickles (control, 10% beet extract, 20% beet extract, 30% beet extract, 40% beet extract) ranged 3.45$\sim$3.51, 1.42$\sim$1.88% and 1.86$\sim$1.91, respectively. The pH of the experimental groups slowly decreased during the fermentation. The total acidity of the experimental groups were increased. In terms of color values, L and a values were decreased, but b values were increased, with increasing beet extract content. The hardness of lotus root pickles measured instrumentally was higher in lotus root pickle added with 40% beet water extract than in control pickle. Overall, based on sensory evaluation, lotus root pickle added 30% beet extract was preferred over the other samples.
This study was carried out to investigate seed germination and seedling of cabbage and sugar beet in four treatments of salinity including 0 (control), 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% NaCl. The results showed that different treatments of salinity had considerable effects on the germination and root and shoot length of cabbage and sugar beet. Percent of germination in both species showed significant decrease with increasing salinity up to 1.5% NaCl. This decrease was more evident in cabbage when compared to sugar beet. The required time for germination increased with high levels of salinity. The seedling growth of both species were inhibited by all salinity levels. Particularly at 1.0 and 1.5% NaCl, no measurable length was observed in cabbage and sugar beet. At 0.5% NaCl root growth of both plant species was more affected as compared to shoot growth by salinity.

Agrobacterium rhizogenes-mediated transformation of sugar beet hairy roots expressing single-chain variable fragment (scFv) was exploited to evaluate the efficacy of four antibody-based constructs for interfering with the Beet necrotic yellow vein virus infection. The scFv specific to a major coat protein of virus, p21, was targeted to various cellular compartments including the cytosol (pIC and pICC constructs), apoplast (pIA), and mitochondrion (pIM). After mechanical virus inoculation, most of the hairy root clones expressing scFv in the cytosol displayed low virus titers while the majority of transgenic hairy root clones accumulated antibody in outer membrane of mitochondria or apoplast were infected. This hairy root system provided an efficient and rapid approach to initially investigating root disease resistance like rhizomania prior to transform whole recalcitrant plants such as sugar beet.

In order to produce betacyanins from sugar beet(Beta vulagris L.) in vitro, callus induction, shoot formation, root formation, betacyanin contents and protein contents determined from callus which was induced cotyledons of sugar beet seedling under an addition of NAA and BAP on the MS medium. The results were summarized as follows; The combination 3.0mg/l NAA and 1.0mg/l BAP treatment showed the most high callus induction rate, betacyanin and protein contents. The combination NAA and BAP treatments were not shoot formation, but BAP treatments showed high root formation rate. But high concentrations of BAP have not shown root formation.
BACKGROUND: Since the number of crops cultivated in reclaimed land is huge, it is very difficult to quantify the total crop production. Therefore, a non-destructive method for predicting crop production is needed. Salt tolerant root vegetables such as red beets and sugar beet are suitable for cultivation in reclaimed land. If their underground biomass can be predicted, it helps to estimate crop productivity. Objectives of this study are to investigate maximum leaf length and weight of red beet, sugar beet, and turnips grown in reclaimed land, and to determine optimal model with regression analysis for linear and allometric growth models. METHODS AND RESULTS: Maximum leaf length, width, and root fresh weight of red beets, sugar beets, and turnips were measured. Ten linear models and six allometric growth models were selected for estimation of root fresh weight and non-linear regression analysis was conducted. The allometric growth model, which have a variable multiplied by square of maximum leaf length and maximum leaf width, showed highest R2 values of 0.67, 0.70, and 0.49 for red beets, sugar beets, and turnips, respectively. Validation results of the models for red beets and sugar beets showed the R2 values of 0.63 and 0.65, respectively. However, the model for turnips showed the R2 value of 0.48. The allometric growth model was suitable for estimating the root fresh weight of red beets and sugar beets, but the accuracy for turnips was relatively low. CONCLUSION: The regression models established in this study may be useful to estimate the total production of root vegetables cultivated in reclaimed land, and it will be used as a non-destructive method for prediction of crop information.
This study was designed to examine the in vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of red beet (Beta vulagaris) root. Red beet root was extracted using 70% ethanol and then fractionated sequentially with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and butanol. Antioxidative ability was evaluated by bioassays using total polyphenol contents and ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid diammonium salt) radical scavenging activity. Ethyl acetate fraction of red beet root was best on total polyphenol contents ($37.02{\pm}0.37mg\;GAE/g$) and ABTS radical scavenging effects ($IC_{50}$$42.9{\pm}9.5{\mu}g/mL$). For the anti-inflammatory activity in RAW264.7 cells, the hexane fraction showed the highest inflammatory effect. Dose response studies were performed to determine the inhibitory effect of hexane fraction of red beet root on pro-inflammatory mediators in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. The hexane fraction of red beet root inhibited the NO and $PGE_2$ production and the protein level of iNOS and COX-2, and protein expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines ($TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-6 and $IL-1{\beta}$), in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that red beet root has considerable potential as a functional food ingredient with antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects.
Potassium (K) is an element essential for plant growth. This study was aimed to examine the effects of three formulations of potash feldspar, powder, sand, and granule type on the growth of radish and beet in organic farming. 0.1% three formulations of potash feldspar were treated on the soil before transplanting 15 days-old seedlings of radish and beet in greenhouse. The results showed that all kinds of potash feldspar significantly increased shoot and root growth, and soluble solid contents excepted for root hardness in radish and beet. Among them, the powder type of potash feldspar was the most effective on foliage and root growth of radish and beet. Based on the results, it was confirmed that 0.1% potash feldspar treated in the rhizosphere of radish and beet can promote the growth of them.
Sugar beet represents the root of Beta vulgaris L. var. rapa $D_{UMORT}$. of the family, Chenopodiaccae. Sugar beet has been generally cultivated in the northern temperate region, but in our country, there has been seen no production of sugar from the cultivated beet so far We obtained the seeds of sugar beet from Canada and began to cultivate them in our N.I.H. Medicinal Plant Garden from April, 1969. We found such successful 90% germination, where with in October obtained 1kg root per stub which contained $16{\sim}20%$ of sugar.
In order to interpret yield response of sugar beet to nitrogen fertilizer, and pig manure compost in saline-sodic soil of reclaimed tidal land, 4 kinds of response model, i.e., quadratic, exponential, square root, and linear response, and plateau model, are applied. The root fresh yield of sugar beet decreased exponentially with the increase of soil EC. The root fresh yield of sugar beet to nitrogen fertilizer was fitted best to the linear response, and plateau model among 4 yield response models with highly significant determination coefficient ($R^2=0.92^{**}$). The optimum N rate determined on the model was 138 kg N $ha^{-1}$. The root fresh yield of sugar beet to pig manure compost was fitted best to the quadratic model among 4 yield response models with highly significant determination coefficient ($R^2=0.99^{**}$). The maximum N rate determined on the model was 9.17 ton $ha^{-1}$. In conclusion, the proper model to interpret the yield of sugar beet in saline-sodic soil differs with the kinds of nutrient, linear response, and plateau model for fertilizer nitrogen, and quadratic model to pig manure compost.
