The weathering process of rocks leads to the reduction of geotechnical bearing capacity. The weathering of granite is frequently used to refer to the degradation of geotechnical property in the design and construction of infra-structure. In this study, the range of values of CIA (chemical index of alteration) and the change of mineral compositions by weathering have been analysed with igneous rock, which covers 45.5% in South Korean territory. Several weathering indices were studied for various rocks found in Korea and significant relationships between different indices were delineated via statistical analysis. The applicability of CIA was found to be the most significant among all weathering indicies. The composition of illite, the secondary weathering residual, generally increases for the felsic rock, and swelling clay material is not included. The weathering of felsic rock will follow a sequential process, starting from bed rock, illite, and chlorite to kaoline. The mafic rock will show weathering process, from bed rock, smectite, and chlorite to kaoline. The intermediate rocks such as andesite and tuff will show similar weathering procedure and the composition of kaoline, chlorite, and smectite tends to increase more than that of illite when the mafic rock is dominated. This means the increase of rock material which has high CEC (cation exchange capacity) during secondary weathering process. However, the characteristics of a specific rock cannot be completely analyzed using merely CIA, since it is exclusively based on chemical composition and corresponding alteration. The CIA can be used to quantify the weathering process in a limited range, and further considerations such as rock composition, strength characteristics will be required to configure the comprehensive weathering impact on any specific region.
A packed bed of volcanic rock was used as deodorizing material to remove hydrogen sulfide($H_2$S) from air in a laboratory-scale column, and was inoculated with Thiobacillus sp. as $H_2S$ oxidizer. The effects of volcanic rock particle size distribution on system pressure drop were examined. Various tests have been conducted to evaluate the effect of $H_2S$ inlet concentration and CBCT(Empty Bed Contact Time) on $H_2S$ elimination. The pressure drop for particles of size range from 5.6 to 10 mm was 14 mm$H_2S$/m at a representative gas velocity of 0.25m/s. Biofilter using scoria and Thiobacillus sp. could get the stable removal efficiencies more than 99.9% under $H_2S$ inlet concentrations in the range from 30 to 1,100ppm at a constant gas flow rate of $15.2{\ell}$/min. $H_2S$ removal efficiencies greater than 99% were observed as long as EBCT was longer than 8sec at the 250ppm of $H_2S$ inlet concentration. When EBCT was reduced to 5.5 sec, $H_2S$ removal efficiency decreased by about 12 percent. The maximum $H_2S$ elimination capacity was determined to be 269g-$H_2S/m^3{\cdot}hr$.

To investigate the influence of forest road characteristics and site conditions on the stability of forest-road in granite area, four forest roads had been selected in Kyongbuk regions. The total of 13 road characteristic variables were evaluated by the discriminant analysis. The factors influencing the stability of forest road were bed rock, slope length, coverage, hardness, side-ditch erosion and road width. But aspect and soil texture were not significant for the stability in this area. In the correlation between forest environment and road structure, hardness and bed rock was highly significant in stability group, and coverage and side-ditch erosion was highly significant in instability group. 75 of 175 segments were instable whereas the others were stable. The centroids value by discriminant function in the stability and instability were estimated to 3.0585 and -1.9116, respectively. The stability criterion of forest road was discriminated from the centroids value of the each group. The main factors contributing the stability of forest road were significant in order of side-ditch erosion, coverage, soil texture, elevation, gradient, slope length and construction year. The prediction rate of discriminant function for stability evaluation of forest road was as high as 97.44%. In conclusion, the forest road structure factors such as length, coverage and slope gradient were controlled by construction techniques. If the factors like those should be considered in design, construction and forest road management, the stability of forest road may increase more. And also, it is necessary to take slope protection measures like small terraces and retaining walls for stability of cut slope.
Seasonal variation of the crab community in the eelgrass (Zostera marina) bed in Kwangyang Bay was studied based on the monthly collections through a year of 1994. The crab community in the eelgrass bed was composed of 21 species representing 12 families. The community was dominated by Charybdis Japonica, Telmessus acutidens, Hemigrapsus penicillatus, and Pugettia quadridens. Crabs collected in the study area were primarily small-sized species or early juveniles of large crab species. Most individuals had carapace width smaller than 25 mm except C. japonica and T. acutidens which had maximum carapace width over 85 mm. More than 5 species were collected every month except January and February (4 and 3 species, respectively). The peak abundance occurred in August and low abundances in autumn and winter. Species diversity indices showed that more diverse crabs were collected In spring and summer, and lesser ones in autumn and winter. The crabs in the study area can be grouped into three groups on the basis of their occurrence patterns: resident species, seasonal species, and temporary species. More abundant and more diverse crabs were collected during nighttime than daytime.

Host rock or the standing sculptured Buddha in the Yongamsa temple is macular porphyritic biotite granite, which has gone through mechanical and chemical weathering. The rock around the Buddha statue is busily scattered with steep inclinations that are almost vertically discontinuous planes with the strikes of $N8^{\circ}E$. Especially the development of the joints that cross the major joints causes the structural instability of the rock. The rock of the Buddha statue is separated into several rock blocks because of many different discontinuity. Thus it is estimated that the bed rock has not only plane and toppling failure but also wedge failure in all the sides. Since the differential pressure is imposed on the body of the Buddha in the host rock, it is urgent to give a reinforce treatment of geotechnical engineering for the safe of its structural stability. Very contact area of joints have turned into soil, which promotes the growth of weeds and plant roots, then aggravates the mechanical weathering of the rock. Thus conservational treatments should also be considered to get rid of secondary contaminants and vegetation along the discontinuities and to prevent further damages.
The geology of the study area is composed mainly of conglomerate, sandstone, and shale and basalt. It is a rock that has been observed to move relatively recently through various brittle deformation and various stress fields during the recent period. To form a gentle terrain with severe crushing. The slope is located at the intersection of the Taegok Fault in the north-northeast direction and the Bukok Fault in the western north-west direction, and many faults, fault zones and fracture zones of various sizes are developed in the rock bed. In this study, the geological characteristics of the slope are investigated and the countermeasure method is suggested. It is suggested that periodical measurement and analysis should be performed by installing a measuring instrument according to each structure for safety management of the surrounding roads and grounds during construction or reinforcement by the countermeasure method for the slope of the study area.
The basement rock of upper stream of Keum River Valley consists of Precambrian gneiss which is resistant to weathering. That of mid and lower stream valley, however, is mainly composed of Mesozoic granites which are vulnerable to weathering. The upstream part of Geum River Basin is typified by the deeply-incised and steep meandering streams, whereas mid and lower part is characterized by wide floodplain and gently dipping river bottom toward the Yellow Sea. In particular flooding deposits, in which are imprinted a number of repetitions of erosion and sedimentation during the Holocene, are widely distributed in the lower stream of Geum River Basin. For understanding of erosions in the mid and lower stream of Geum River Basin, the rate of erosion of each small basins were estimated by using the data of field survey, erosional experiments and GIS ananlysis. It was revealed that erosion rate appeared highest in granite areas, and overall areas, in this field survey were represented by relatively high erosion rates. By implemeatation of remote sensing and imagery data, the temporal changes of river bed sediments for about last 11 years were successfully monitored. Observed as an important phenomenon is that the river bed has been risen since 1994 when an embankment (Dyke) was constructed in the estuarine river mouth. From the results derived from the detailed river bed topographical map made in this investigation, the sedimentation of the lower river basin is considered to be deposited with about 5 cm/year for the last 11 years. Based on this river bed profile analysis by HEC-6 module, it is predicted that Geum River bed of Ganggyeong area is continuously rising up in general until 2004. Although extraction of a large amount of aggregates from Gongju to Ganggyung areas, the Ganggyung lower stream shows the distinct sedimentation. Therefore, it is interpreted that the active erosions of tributary basins Geum drainage basins can affect general river bed rising changes of Geum River.
Geomorphological, bed material and hydraulic characteristics are basis informations for the planning, design and management of the river in the aspect of flood control and environmental conservation, and it is very important to use these informations for the design of stable channel. In this study, dominant discharge was selected, geomorphological and hydraulic characteristics were analyzed using that discharge and also the characteristics of bed materials distribution were analyzed and bed materials-flow resistance relationship was evaluated, for the upstream section of Namgang dam. The dominant discharge was estimated a return period of approximately 1.5 year and stream type were classified Segment 1 and Segment 2 in this stream. Also, the frequency of riffle-pool showed 4.4 because this study area has the characteristics of natural channel that have not channel-crossing structures. In dominant discharge, according to the results that analyzed relationship between $h/d_{50}$ and $V/u_*$ to calculate flow resistance by bed materials, Julian's formula showed to appropriate in channel where is relatively close to natural river and is predominantly consisted of gravel, cobble, boulder and rock in mountain, and it was confirmed that the image processing methodology will be easily applied to the analysis of bed materials distribution in future.
The Second Yeon Hwa Mine which belongs to a so called Lead-Zines Belt Area in the central east Korea is located at about 10 km northeast of the Seogpo railway station on Yeongdong Line. The exploitation of the mine started in June, 1969 and furnished the machinary ore dressing plant in November, 1971. The current monthly production of rude ore is 15,000 meteric tons. The results of the study on the lead-zinc-copper deposits of the Second Yeonhwa mine are summerized as follows: (1) main ore deposits of the mine are localized in the Pungchon Limestion formation of Cambrian age, (2) related ingneous rock with ore deposits is granite porphyry, which distributed in NS and $N50^{\circ}W$ trend, (3) ore solution ascended along the $N50^{\circ}W$ trend which represents folding axis and fault plane and mineralized selectively in the limestone formation. (4) high grade ore deposits are localized in concave and convex boundaries of granite porphyry, and hanging walls of shale bed ($P_2S$ shale bed) in Pungchon Limestone formation and (5) skarn minerals are consisted of garnet, hedenbergite, diopside, and sulfide minerals are composed of zincblenede, galena, phyrhotite, pyrite and some amount of chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite.

This study deals with the case that was the field application of the microseismic monitoring techniques for the stability monitoring in a domestic mine. The usefulness and limitations of the microseismic techniques were examined through analyzing the microseismic monitored data. The target limestone mine adopted a hybrid room-and-pillar mining method to improve the extraction ratio. The accelerometers were installed in each vertical pillar within the test bed which has the horizontal cross-section $50m{\times}50m$. The measured signals were divided into 4 types; blasting induced signal, drilling induced signal, damage induced signal, and electric noise. The stability analysis was performed based on the measured damage induced signals. After the blasting in the mining section close to the test bed, the damage of the pillar was increased and rockfall near the test bed could be estimated from monitored microseismic data. It was possible to assess the pillar stability from the changes of daily monitored data and the proposed safety criteria from the accumulated monitored data. However, there was a difficulty to determine the 3D microseismic source positions due to the 2D local sensor arrays. Also, it was needed to use real-time monitoring methods in domestic mines. By complementing the problems encountered in the mine application and comparing microseismic monitored data with mining operations, the microseismic monitoring technique can be used as a better safety method.
