  • This paper describes experimental studies of impact pressure generated by breaking regular waves in shallow water on a vertical cylinder. Experimental work was carried out in a shallow water flume using a 1:30 - scale model of a vertical rigid circular hollow cylinder with a diameter 0.2 m. This represents a monopile for shallow water offshore wind turbines, subjected to depth induced breaking regular waves of frequencies of 0.8 Hz. The experimental setup included a 1 in 10 sloping bed followed by horizontal bed with a constant 0.8 m water depth. To determine the breaking characteristics, plunging breaking waves were generated. Free surface elevations were recorded at different locations between the wave paddle to the cylinder. Wave impact pressures on the cylinder at a number of elevations along its height were measured under breaking regular waves. The depth-induced wave breaking characteristics, impact pressures, and wave run-up during impact for various cylinder locations are presented and discussed.

  • The present study investigated the applicability of the minium fludization velocity measuring method using linear regression analysis between the standard deviation of pressure fluctuation and gas velocity in multi-particle sand on a fluidized bed 0.109 in inner diameter. We measured minium fludization velocity according to the standard deviation of particle distribution in Gaussian distribution. The measured value compared with other researchers' equations. The minium fludization velocity derived from the linear regression analysis of the standard deviation of pressure fluctuation and pressure drop inside the bed. We also found that the minium fludization velocity of a multi-particle system using the standard deviation of pressure fluctuation must be measured at freely bubbling region.

  • A ground hot-firing test (HFT) was carried out to make a close examination into the pressure instability for the 70 N-class hydrazine thruster under development. Monopropellant grade hydrazine was adopted as a propellant for the HFT, and catalyst-bed was filled with $Ir/Al_2O_3$ catalyst. In order to investigate the effects of thrust-chamber diameter on combustion stability, evaluation tests for the development models were performed on three kinds of lower thrust chambers having the length-to-diameter ratio (L/D) of 1.03, 1.13, and 1.26. As results, it was found that low frequency instability (~ 50 Hz) was inherent in the models, and in addition, increase of the L/D and decrease of the operating pressure led to an amplification of pressure oscillation in the test condition specified.

  • A ground hot-firing test was conducted to take out the optimal design configurations for the catalyst bed of liquid-monopropellant hydrazine thruster which could be used for primary engine or attitude control thruster of space vehicles. Performance characteristics with the variation of thrust-chamber length are investigated in terms of thrust, specific impulse, chamber pressure, characteristic velocity, and hydrazine decomposition rate. Additionally, the correlations between propellant-supply pressure and performance parameters are given. As results, increase of catalyst-bed length leads to performance degradation in this test condition, and also decreases propellant consumption efficiency with the supply pressure variation.

  • Interruption of good fluidization in a fluidized bed ash cooler(FBAC) for discharging bed materials such as sand or coal ash particles from the CFB combustor is frequently happened because of agglomeration of the particles in the bed. This unstable operation may, in the worst case, result in an unscheduled boiler shut down. In this study, we examined the operation problems of the FBAC of Tonghae CFB boiler and studied and introduced the simple detection and solution techniques with analyzing the mixing property and the occurrence of defluidization in a simulated fluidized bed ash cooler system (0.5m-H x 0.5m-W x 1.0m-L). The bridge of the large particles at the bed surface could be observed, and this caused to form the defluidization area at the entrance of the FBAC. The defluidization was affected not only by airflow rates but also by the particles discharging rates as well as particle size distribution in the FBAC. The local defluidization could be detected by analysis of the accumulated standard deviation error at a given period of time. Also, the regulation of the overall or local airflow rate made clearing up the local defluidization possible.

  • The time consuming and expensive nature of experimental research on scouring processes caused by flowing water makes it attractive to develop numerical tools for the predication of the interaction of the fluid flow and the movable bed. In this paper the numerical simulation of scour by a wall jet is presented. The flow is assumed to be two-dimensional, and the alluvium is cohesionless. The solution process, repeated at each time step, involves simulation of a turbulent wall jet flow, solution of the convection-diffusion of sand concentration, and prediction of the bed deformation. For simulation of the jet flow, the governing equations for momentum, mass balance and turbulent parameters are solved by the finite volume method. The SIMPLE scheme with momentum interpolation is used for pressure correction. The convection-diffusion equation is solved for sediment concentration. A boundary condition for concentration at the bed, which takes into account the effect of bed-load, is implemented. The time rate of deposition and scour at the bed is obtained by solving the continuity equation for sediment. The shape and position of the scour hole and deposition of the bed material downstream of the hole appear realistic.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of muscular power by COP(center of pressure) training according to the angle variation of tilting bed. We changed the angles of tilting bed(up-down direction 0$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$ and right-left direction -15$^{\circ}$, 0$^{\circ}$, +15$^{\circ}$) for the correlation between angles and muscular power. And we measured EMG(electormyography) of lower limbs muscle(rectus femoris, biceps femoris, and gastrocnemius, tibialisa anterior) during COP training. COP training was divided by the COP trace training(in all direction) and sine wave trace training(vertical and horizontal direction). As the result, we obtained the improvement effect of COP training and we showed that electromyography(EMG) variations of lower limbs muscle on the angle variations of tilting bed were investigated.

  • Heat and hydrogen transfer characteristics have been experimentally investigated for a hydride reaction bed, in which hydride material LaN $i_{4,7}$A $l_{0.3}$ is contained for hydrogen storage. This problem is of particular interest in the design of metal hydride devices such as metal-hydride refrigerators, heat pumps, or metal-hydride storage units. Transient behavior of hydrogen transfer through the hydride materials as well as heat transfer is studied during absorption and desorption processes in detail. The experimental results obtained indicate that the mass flow of the hydrogen is strongly affected by the governing parameters, such as the initial pressure of the reaction bed, absorption or desorption period, and cooling or heating temperature. These mass transfer results are along with the heat transfer rate between hydride materials and heat transfer medium in the reaction bed.d.d.

  • The water gas shift conversion catalyst prepared by the American Cyanamide Co. was subjected to fluidization in a 2-in. Pyrex glass tube to obtain the basic fluidization characteristic data. The size of the catalyst charged ranged from 70 to 120 meshes and it was supported on a single layer 300-mesh wire gauze through which the fluidizing medium, the air, was passed. Following are some data and facts found by the authors: (1) The catalyst particles were porous, and their surfaces were trough and irregular. (2) The average effective particle density and the average shape factor of these particles were 152.2 lb/$ft^3$ and 0.865 respectively. (3) As the particle diameter of the catalyst increased, the minimum fluid voidage of the bed decreased slightly. (4) Just before the incipient fluidization, pressure drop suddenly fell and the bed expanded simultaneously. (5) After fluidization set in, the expansion characteristics of the catalyst bed were similar to those of sand and glass beads except intense bubbling in the catalyst bed.
