Performance monitoring of timber structures in underground construction using wireless SmartPlank

  • Although timber structures have been extensively used in underground temporary supporting system, their actual performance is poorly understood, resulting in potentially conservative and over-engineered design. In this paper, a novel wireless sensor technology, SmartPlank, is introduced to monitor the field performance of timber structures during underground construction. It consists of a wooden beam equipped with a streamlined wireless sensor node, two thin foil strain gauges and two temperature sensors, which enables to measure the strain and temperature at two sides of the beam, and to transmit this information in real-time over an IPv6 (6LowPan) multi-hop wireless mesh network and Internet. Four SmartPlanks were deployed at the London Underground's Tottenham Court Road (TCR) station redevelopment site during the Stair 14 excavation, together with seven relay nodes and a gateway. The monitoring started from August 2013, and will last for one and a half years until the Central Line possession in 2015. This paper reports both the short-term and long-term performances of the monitored timber structures. The grouting effect on the short-term performance of timber structures is highlighted; the grout injection process creates a large downward pressure on the top surface of the SmartPlank. The short and long term earth pressures applied to the monitored structures are estimated from the measured strains, and the estimated values are compared to the design loads.

  • A buncher is one of the main pieces of equipment in the medium energy beam transport line (MEBT) for China accelerator driven sub-critical system (C-ADS) Injector II. To focus the beam longitudinally and match the beam for the acceptance of the superconducting linac section, two room temperature quarter wave resonator (QWR) bunchers with frequency of 162.5 MHz have been designed as parts of the MEBT. According to the beam transmission matching of the MEBT and the geometric parameters requirements of bunchers, the unique mechanical structure and the main processing technology of buncher cavities and their couplers and tuners are described in this paper. The fabrication of bunchers and their parts have been completed and tested at high power, the test results agree well with the design requirements. These bunchers work well for about two years in Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

EO Performances of the Ion Beam Aligned TN-LCD on a Carbon Nitride Thin Film Surface

  • Carbon Nitride exhibits high electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity that are similar to the properties shown by diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. These diamond-like transport properties in Carbon Nitride come in a material consisting of $sp^2$-bonded carbon versus the $sp^3$-carbon of DLC. The diamond-like properties and nondiamond-like bonding make NDLC an attractive candidate for applications. Liquid crystal (LC) alignment capabilities with ion beam exposure on carbon nitride thin films and Electro-Optical (EO) performances of the ion-beam aligned twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) with oblique ion beam exposure on the Carbon Nitride thin film surface were studied. An excellent uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure on the Carbon Nitride thin films was observed. In addition, the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD were achieved. Finally, we achieved the residual DC property of the ion-beam- aligned TN-LCD on the Carbon Nitride thin film.

Power control of CiADS core with the intensity of the proton beam

  • This paper reports the control method for the core power of the China initiative Accelerator Driven System (CiADS) facility. In the CiADS facility, an intense external neutron source provided by a proton accelerator coupled to a spallation target is used to drive a sub-critical reactor. Without any control rod inside the sub-critical reactor, the core power is controlled by adjusting the proton beam intensity. In order to continuously change the beam intensity, an adjustable aperture is considered to be used at the Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) line of the accelerator. The aperture size is adjusted based on the Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controllers, by comparing either the setting beam intensity or the setting core power with the measured value. To evaluate the proposed control method, a CiADS core model is built based on the point reactor kinetics model with six delayed neutron groups. The simulations based on the CiADS core model have indicated that the core power can be controlled stably by adjusting the aperture size. The response time in the adjustment of the core power depends mainly on the adjustment time of the beam intensity.

  • This paper designed the antenna for collecting and servicing the traffic information that apply to freeway Traffic Management System, as using DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication). Active DSRC is the technology that is using 5.8GHz Radio Frequency to a mean Sequency and there are a lot of the case occurring a physical electric wave shadowing because of the traveling straight of a electric wave. In such inferior communication environment, it constructed the stabilized communication link that can do collecting and servicing the correct traffic information and designed the beam pattern considering the establishment position of the antenna that can apply to various road environments and a communication area. By considering the communication link environment, this paper designed and manufacture the mean frequency of 5.8GHz, the input loss of -17dB in 75MHz bandwidth, the Axial ratio of 1.5:1, and $2{\times}4$ array microstrip antenna which beam pattern have the characteristic of $55^{\circ}$ horizontal half power beam width and $26^{\circ}$elevation half power beam width and the minimum establishment height of the antenna was designed as 14m for avoiding electric wave shadowing on a physical condition between vehicles

  • X-Band taper slot-typed active phased array antenna is studied and designed. Through the simulated and measured performances, it is confirmed that both of active reflection coefficient and active radiation pattern of the designed phased array antenna are agreed well with those of the prototype manufactured one. From this study, the proposed antenna structure is matched to the design target of characteristics of antenna's broadband beam.

  • We report the characteristics of individual ultra-long SnO2 nanowires(NWs) grown on sapphire(0001) substrates by vapor transport method. NWs, with typical lengths of >$400{\mu}m$, grew in the form of NW bundles under a hydrogen reducing atmosphere, without metal catalysts. The individual NWs were examined using high-resolution X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The results revealed that the SnO2 NWs grew as high-quality, tetragonal-rutile-phase single crystals with mosaic distributions of $0.02^{\circ}$ and $0.026^{\circ}$ in the (101) and (110) planes, respectively.

  • Applying previous studies performed in the moisture transportation characteristics and shrinkage of lightweight concrete application of shrinkage reduction is to discuss. Applicability of shrinkage reduction effect of lightweight concrete applies for the analysis of PSC girder bridge beam placed on the construction site. Stress of the concrete bridge deck, rebar quantity is calculated by effective elastic modulus method and crack risk is assessed by moisture transport and differential shrinkage analysis. After approximately 10 days maximum tensile stress occurs 6MPa, similar to the case of normal concrete, a maximum tensile stress occurs 3MPa in lightweight concrete and comparing to normal concrete stress was reduced to approximately 50%. Normal and lightweight concrete crack index, respectively, is reduced 1.6 to 1.2, 1.2 to 0.9 in surface and boundary region. Therefore, reduction in shrinkage of concrete were able to confirm reduction of crack risk.

  • Chloride ingress implies a complex interaction between physical and chemical process, in which heat, moisture and chloride ions transport through concrete cover. Meanwhile, reinforced concrete structure itself undergoes evolution due to variation in temperature, relative humidity and creep effects, which can potentially change the deformation and trigger some micro-cracks in concrete. In addition, all of these process show time-dependent performance with complex interaction between structures and environments. In the present work, a time-dependent behavior of chloride transport in reinforced concrete beam subjected to flexural load is proposed based on the well-known section fiber model. The strain state varies because of stress redistribution caused by the interaction between environment and structure, mainly dominated by thermal stresses and shrinkage stress and creep. Finally, in order to clear the influence of strain state on the chloride diffusivity, experiment test were carried out and a power function used to describe this influence is proposed.

  • Carrier mobility was measured using time-of-flight (TOF) measurements to investigate the transport properties of holes and electrons in stabilized a-Se film. A laser beam with pulse duration of 5 ns and wavelength of 350 nm was illuminated on the surface of a-Se with thickness of $400\;{\mu}m$. The measured transit times of hole and electron were about $8.73\;{\mu}s\;and\;229.17\;{\mu}s$, respectively. The experimental results showed that the hole and electron drifting mobility were $0.04584\;cm^2V^{-1}S^{-1}\;and\;0.00174\;cm^2V^{-1}s^{-1}\;at\;10\;V/{\mu}m$.
