The soft x-ray(10nm-100nm) interferometer is a modified Mach-Zehnder type interferometer and it consists of two beam-splitters and four totally reflecting mirrors. The beam-splitters used here are 50% transmission and 50% reflection grating type. The diffraction patterns of beam splitters(1st B.S.) were investigated with a He-Ne laser. The diffraction patterns produced by the soft x-ray interferometer (2nd B.S.) were also investigated in intensities positions. The diffraction patterns of 20 degree grazing incidence on the beam splitters(1st B.S.) show a circular array of spots. Both the reflected and the transmitted beams show the same patterns but symmetric circles on the screen. The maximum intensity appears roughly when n is in the zeroth and odd orders and the suppressed peak(missing order) appears when n is in even orders. Intensities of 3 center fringes(n = 0, $\pm$1) are stronger than others. These results confirm the reduced grating equation and make agree with the intensity distribution function. It was found that the final patterns produced by the soft x-ray interferometer (2nd B.S.) consisted of fine fringes which were caused by two of three diffraction beams that were arrived at the second beam-splitter.
Open-cross-section composite beam (OCB) tends to suffer vortex-induced vibration (VIV) due to its bluff aerodynamic shape. A cable-stayed bridge equipped with typical OCB is taken as an example in this paper to conduct sectional model wind tunnel test. Vortex-induced vibration is observed and maximum vibration amplitudes are obtained. CFD approach is employed to calculate the flow field around original cross sections in service stage and construction stage, as well as sections added with three different countermeasures: splitters, slabs and wind fairings. Results show that flow separate on the upstream edge and cause vortex shedding on original section. Splitters can only smooth the flow field on the upper surface, while slabs cannot smooth flow field on the upper or lower surface too much. Thus, splitters or slabs cannot serve as valid aerodynamic means. Wind tunnel test results show that VIV can only be mitigated when wind fairings are mounted, by which the flow field above and below the bridge deck are accelerated simultaneously.
In this paper, we have fabricated asymmetric Y-branch optical power splitters with various optical power splitting ratios by changing the width of one of the output waveguides using $Ag^+-Na^+$ ion change method in BK7 glass. The transmission characteristics of asymmetric Y-branch optical power splitters with different output waveguide width have been investigated using the finitedifference beam propagation method (FD-BPM). We have found the index of the channel waveguide formed by Ag+-Na+ ion change method in BK7 glass and have fabricated channel waveguides to examine the transmission characteristics of channel waveguide. And we have fabricated asymmetric Y-branch optical power splitters with output waveguide width from TEX>$4{\mu}m$ to $6{\mu}m$. /TEX>.
Here we report Airy beams coupled with waveguide modes. These waveguide Airy (WAiry) beams propagate through layered planar structures inheriting the characteristics of waveguide modes as well as those of Airy beams, such as diffraction-free and accelerating features. In particular, we focus on the WAiry beams associated with backward waveguide modes, showing that the backward feature can alter the trajectories of the WAiry beams significantly. Based on this, we propose a new scheme of waveguide-type polarization/power beam splitters.

The optical power splitter/couplers based on MMI(multimode interference) in GaAs/AlGaAs are studied. We presetn a design of optical power splitter/couplers, which have deeply etched multimode waveguide. The properties and fabrication tolerance on the etching depth, multimode waveguide width are simulatedusing a FD-BPM (finite difference beam propgation method). Proposed 1*N optical of designed device is 0.7dB smaller than the optical power splitter with a shallowly etched MMI section. For 0.5dB excess loss, the predicted fabrication tolerance is 0.6.mu.m on the multimode waveguide width of the 14 optical power splitter with a deeply etched MMI section. Also excess loss and uniformity of poposed 32*32 optical power coupler are below 0.3dB. The excess loss of proposed 32*32 optical power coupler is 2dB smaller than the optical power coupler with a shallowly etched MMI section. It is shown that the optical power splitters/couplers with a deeply etched mMI section have low loss, good uniformity, and improved fabriction tolerance.
In conventional photogrammetry, three-dimensional coordinates are obtained from two consecutive images of a stationary object photographed from two exposure stations, separated by a certain distance. However, it is impossible to photograph moving objects from two stations with one camera at the same time. Various methods to overcome this obstacle were devised e. g. taking the left and right scenes simultaneously with one camera using a beam splitter attached to the front, thus creating a stereo scene in one image. A beam splitter consists of two outer mirrors and two inner mirrors. This paper deals with research where the optical principles of the beam splitter were evaluated based on light path phenomena between the outer mirrors and the inner mirrors. A mathematical model of the geometric configuration was derived for the beam splitter. This allows us to design and control a beam splitter to obtain maximum scale and maximum base-height ratio by stepwise application of the mathematical model. The results show that the beam splitter is a very useful tool for stereophotography with one camera. The optimum geometric configurations ensuring maximum scale and base-height ratio are closely related to inner and outer reflector sizes, their inclination angles and the offsets between the outer mirrors.
We systematically investigated the negative-refraction effect for both TE and TM polarizations in annular photonic crystals. Since two polarization waves are excited in different bands, they result in different refractive angles, and so polarization beam splitters can be made of annular photonic crystals. It was found that, in comparison to normal square-lattice air-hole photonic crystals, annular photonic crystals have a much wider common frequency band between TE-1 and TM-2, which is quite beneficial to finding the overlap between the negative-refraction regions belonging to TE-1 and TM-2 respectively. Further analyses of equifrequency surfaces and the electric-field distribution of annular photonic crystals with different parameters have not only demonstrated how the filling factor of annular cells affects the formation of the common negative-refraction region between TE-1 and TM-2, but also revealed some ways to improve the performance of a polarization beam splitter based on the negative-refraction effect in an annular photonic crystal.

In an amplitude-splitting interferometer, a beam splitter divides an input beam into two parts, which are superposed after propagating along separate paths, producing an interference effect. We have investigated the phase relation between the reflected and transmitted light waves at BS's made of lossless dielectric stacks. If we define the phases with proper reference planes, a definite phase relation exists, irrespective of the detailed structure of the layers in the BS. Although this results from the generalized Stokes relations, we have verified it numerically for two representative BS's with symmetric and asymmetric layer structures respectively. When we applied the phase relation to interferometers, we could determine the superposition state of the output beam (either constructive or destructive interference) for a general BS, and could verify that the light's energy was conserved.
