The parameter study of buckling behavior of steel built-up column under compression force is presented in this study. The shear deformation effects due to the bending moment and shear forces are considered for the H-shaped main members along the entire built-up column and batten member connecting double H-shaped main members. The parametric study is performed according to the length of the built-up column, the distance of the H-shaped main members and the number and type of cover plate for battens, respectively. The applicability of AISC design specification of normal and high tension bolted built-up column is investigated. The buckling loads for built-up columns are compared with those obtained from the analytic solution developed in this study, AISC specification, and finite element method based on the beam and plate element, respectively.
In steel framed-tube structures (SFTSs), the plastic hinges at beam-ends cannot be adequately improved because of the large cross sections of spandrel beams, which results in the lower ductility and energy dissipation capacities of traditional SFTSs. To address this drawback, high-strength steel fabricated SFTSs with bolted web-connected replaceable shear links (HSFTS-SLs) have been proposed. In this system, shear links use conventional steel and are placed in the middle of the deep spandrel beams to act as energy dissipative components. In this study, 2/3-scaled HSFTS-SL specimens were fabricated, and cyclic loading tests were carried out to study the seismic performance of both specimens. The finite element models (FEMs) of the two specimens were established and the numerical results were compared with the test results. The results showed that the specimens had good ductility and energy dissipation capacities due to the reliable deformation capacities. The specimens presented the expected failure modes. Using a shorter shear link can provide a higher load-carrying capacity and initial elastic lateral stiffness but induces lower ductility and energy dissipation capacity in HSFTS-SLs. The performance of the specimens was comparable to that of the original sub-structure specimens after replacing shear links. Additionally, the expected post-earthquake recoverability and resilience of the structures could be achieved by replacing shear links. The acceptable residual interstory drift that allows for easy replacement of the bolted web-connected shear link was 0.23%. The bolted web-connected shear links had reliable hysteretic responses and deformation capacities. The connection rotation had a notable contribution to total link rotation. The results of the numerical analysis run for the proposed FEMs were consistent with the test results. It showed that the proposed FEMs could be used to investigate the seismic performance of the HSFTS-SL.

In this paper, size dependent bending and free flexural vibration behaviors of functionally graded (FG) nanobeams are investigated using a nonlocal quasi-3D theory in which both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects are introduced. The nonlocal elastic behavior is described by the differential constitutive model of Eringen, which enables the present model to become effective in the analysis and design of nanostructures. The present theory incorporates the length scale parameter (nonlocal parameter) which can capture the small scale effect, and furthermore accounts for both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects by virtue of a hyperbolic variation of all displacements through the thickness without using shear correction factor. The material properties of FG nanobeams are assumed to vary through the thickness according to a power law. The neutral surface position for such FG nanobeams is determined and the present theory based on exact neutral surface position is employed here. The governing equations are derived using the principal of minimum total potential energy. The effects of nonlocal parameter, aspect ratio and various material compositions on the static and dynamic responses of the FG nanobeam are discussed in detail. A detailed numerical study is carried out to examine the effect of material gradient index, the nonlocal parameter, the beam aspect ratio on the global response of the FG nanobeam. These findings are important in mechanical design considerations of devices that use carbon nanotubes.

Double skin composite (DSC) wall is a structural wall that is filed with concrete between two steel plate skins connected by tie bars. This type of wall was developed to enhance the structural performance of wall, to reduce wall thickness, and to enhance constructibility, eliminating the use of formwork and re-bars. In this study, cyclic tests were performed to investigate the inelastic behavior and earthquake resistance of isolated and coupled DSC walls with rectangular and T-shapedcross-sections. The DSC walls showed stable cyclic behaviors, exhibiting excellent energy dissipation capacity. The te st specimens failed by the tensile fracture of welded joints at the wall base and coupling beam and by the severe local buckling of the steel plate. The deformation capacity of the walls varied with the connection details at the wall base and their cross-sectional shapes. The specimens with well-detailed connections at the wall base showed relatively god deformation capacity ranging from 2.0% to 3.7% drift ratio. The load-carrying capacities of the isolated and coupled wall specimens were evaluated considering their inelastic behavior. The results were compared with the test results.
The mechanical properties of timber construction have drawn more attention after the 2013 Lushan earthquake. A strong desire to preserve this ancient architectural styles has sprung up in recent years, especially for residential buildings of the mountainous areas. In the column-and-tie timber construction, continuous-tenon joints are the most common structural form to connect the chuanfang (similar to the beam in conventional structures) and the column. To study the cyclic performance of the continuous-tenon joints in column-and-tie timber construction, the reversed lateral cyclic loading tests were carried out on three 3/4 scale specimens with different section heights of the chuanfang. The mechanical behavior was assessed by studying the ultimate bending capacity, deformation ductility and energy dissipation capacity. Test results showed that the slippage of chuanfang occurred when the specimens entered the plastic stage, and the slippage degree increased with the increase of the section height of chuanfang. An obvious plastic deformation of the chuanfang occurred due to the mutual squeezing between the column and chuanfang. A significant pinching was observed on the bending moment-rotation curves, and it was more pronounced as the section height of chuanfang increased. The further numerical investigations showed that the flexural capacity and initial stiffness of the continuous-tenon joints increased with the increase of friction coefficient between the chuanfang and the column, and a more obvious increasing of bending moment occurred after the material yielding. The compressive strength perpendicular to grain of the material played a more significant role in the ultimate bending capacity of continuous-tenon joints than the compressive strength parallel to grain.

Recently, oxide semi-conductor materials have been investigated as promising candidates replacing a-Si:H and poly-Si semiconductor because they have some advantages of a room-temperature process, low-cost, high performance and various applications in flexible and transparent electronics. Particularly, amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (a-IGZO) is an interesting semiconductor material for use in flexible thin film transistor (TFT) fabrication due to the high carrier mobility and low deposition temperatures. In this work, we demonstrated improvement of flexibility in IGZO TFTs, which were fabricated on polyimide (PI) substrate. At first, a thin poly-4vinyl phenol (PVP) layer was spin coated on PI substrate for making a smooth surface up to 0.3 nm, which was required to form high quality active layer. Then, Ni gate electrode of 100 nm was deposited on the bare PVP layer by e-beam evaporator using a shadow mask. The PVP and $Al_2O_3$ layers with different thicknesses were used for organic/inorganic multi gate dielectric, which were formed by spin coater and atomic layer deposition (ALD), respectively, at $200^{\circ}C$. 70 nm IGZO semiconductor layer and 70 nm Al source/drain electrodes were respectively deposited by RF magnetron sputter and thermal evaporator using shadow masks. Then, IGZO layer was annealed on a hotplate at $200^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. Standard electrical characteristics of transistors were measured by a semiconductor parameter analyzer at room temperature in the dark and performance of devices then was also evaluated under static and dynamic mechanical deformation. The IGZO TFTs incorporating hybrid gate dielectrics showed a high flexibility compared to the device with single structural gate dielectrics. The effects of mechanical deformation on the TFT characteristics will be discussed in detail.
The general formulation for free vibration and stability analysis of unsymmetric thin-wared space frames is presented in case where the shear deformation effects are neglected. The kinetic and total potential energies are derived by applying the extended virtual work principle, introducing displacement parameters defined at the arbitrarily chosen axis and including warping deformation and second order terms of finite semitangential rotations. In formulating the finite element procedure, cubic Hermitian polynomials are utilized as shape functions of the two node space frame element. Mass, elastic stiffness, and geometric stiffness matrices for the unsymmetric thin-walled section are evaluated, and load-correction stiffness matrices for off-axis distributed loadings are considered. In order to illustrate the accuracy and practical usefulness of this formulation, finite element solutions for the free vibration and stability problems of thin-walled beam-columns and space frames are presented and compared with available solutions.

Flexible displays have been evolved into curved, foldable, and rollable as the degree of bending increases. Due to the presence of brittle electrodes (e.g. indium-tin oxide (ITO)) that easily cracked and delaminated under severe bending deformation, lowering mechanical stress of the electrodes has been critical issue. Because of this, mechanical stress of brittle electrode in flexible displays has been analyzed mostly in terms of bending radius. On the other hand, in order to make rollable display, various mechanical components such as roller and spring are needed to roll-up or extend the screen for the rollable display apparatus. By these mechanical components, brittle electrode in the rollable display is subjected to the excessive tensile stress due to the retracting force as well as the bending stress by the roller. In this study, mechanical deformation of rollable OLED display was modeled considering boundary conditions of the apparatus. An analytical modeling based on the classical beam theory was introduced in order to investigate the mechanical behavior of the rollable display. In addition, finite element analysis (FEA) was used to analyze the effect of mechanical components in the apparatus on the brittle electrode. Furthermore, a strategy for improving the mechanical reliability of the rollable display was suggested through controlling the stiffness of adhesives in the display panel.

In this research, a numerical algorithm is developed for the response analysis of burined pipelines considering longitudinal permanent ground deformation(PGD) due to liquefaction induced lateral spreading. Buried pipelines and surrounding soil are modeled as continuous pipelines using the beam elements and a series of elasto-plastic springs represented for equivalent soil stiffness, respectively. Idealized various PGD patterns based on the observation of PGD are used as a loading configuration and the length of the lateral spread zone is considered as loading parameter. Numerical results are verified with other research results and efficient applicability of developed procedure is shown. Analyses are performed by varying different parameters such as PGD pattern, pipe diameter and pipe thickness. Through these procedures, relative influences of various parameters on the response of buried pipeline subject to longitudinal PGD are investigated.

The free vibration problem of symmetrically laminated composite rectangular plates is formulated based on anisotropic thick plate theory including the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia. Considering the difficulty of obtaining closed-form solutions, Rayleigh-Ritz analysis using polynomials having the property of Timoshenko beam functions as trial functions is adopted. The boundary conditions elastically restrained against rotation are accomodated as well as classical boundary conditions. From the results of numerical studies, the validity of the present method is verified. And it is also found that the adoption of thick plate theory for the vibration analysis of laminated composite plates is essential because of the relatively large shear deformation effect, and that the convergence of the Rayleigh quotient to the stationary value is less rapid in anisotropic composite plates than that in the orthotropic ones due to more complicated mode shapes of the former.
