  • In the last decade, wireless sensor networks have emerged as a promising technology that could accelerate progress in the field of structural monitoring. The main advantages of wireless sensor networks compared to conventional monitoring technologies are fast deployment, small interference with the surroundings, self-organization, flexibility and scalability. These features could enable mass application of monitoring systems, even on smaller structures. However, since wireless sensor network nodes are battery powered and data communication is the most energy consuming task, transferring all the acquired raw data through the network would dramatically limit system lifetime. Hence, data reduction has to be achieved at the node level in order to meet the system lifetime requirements of real life applications. The objective of this paper is to discuss some general aspects of data processing and management in monitoring systems based on wireless sensor networks, to present a prototype monitoring system for civil engineering structures, and to illustrate long-term field test results.

  • Performance degradation of a battery in 20 kWh energy storage system (ESS) under various operating conditions was studied. And energy saving of the ESS was also monitored by connecting with 20 kW photovoltaic (PV). PV-connected ESS saved 5~7% of energy consumption in 2013 compared to that without such system in 2012. As charge-discharge cycle increased, capacity decreased and the performance degradation was glaringly obvious after 40 cycles. And as charge and discharge rate increased, the performance degradation was more serious. After 50 charge-discharge cycles, a lot of degraded product was deposited on the surface of anode and cathode electrodes, and the cathode side was more contaminated. Therefore, in order to maintain the cell performance, it was more important to protect the degradation of the cathode side.

  • This paper describes a design of several ship's emergency lighting system(SELS) that power factor is improved and power is controlled extensively, and techniques to control and monitor this system in remote distance by PC serial communication. The remote monitoring control system is composed of emergency power supply system (EPSS), half bridge(HB)inverter, fluorescent lamp(FL), microprocessor, multi communication interface. EPSS checks the voltage of the emergency backup battery in real time. In case that the voltage of 13[V] or less has been detected for 5[msec] or longer for 3 times in a row, charger circuit is connected for battery charging. Experimental works using proposed system confirm that speedy and stable power to be supplied when main power source cut-off, compared with conventional analog type, and input power up to 35.0[%] by adjusting of pulse frequency of the HB inverter.

  • In this paper, a design and an implementation of an Analog to Digital (A/D) converter are introduced for the conversion of monitored battery cell voltage in the cell voltage monitoring(CVM) system in battery management system(BMS), which is one of the key devices of ECO hybrid cars. The A/D converter in CVM system required a middle conversion speed and a high resolution, therefore, a successive approximate register(SAR) typed A/D converter with 10 bits resolution has been designed and implemented using Magna 0.6um 40V process. The measurement result which kept ${\pm}1$ LSB accuracy in the full scale range(FSR) of 5V, showed the usefulness of the SAR typed A/D converter in realizing a CVM system.

  • Ubiquitous network and wireless sensor networks is being applied in various fields. Located at target areas, node of wireless sensor network uses batteries as a power source. Batteries have a limited energy in sensor network applications. Also, before use, the battery must be charged and It is difficult to replace the battery. Therefore, energy harvesting technology is being researched and being developed for long life of sensor node. Especially, sola energy is being extensively researched. because that can have great amounts of energy than other environmental energy in a short time. In this study, we tested battery charging and recharging, operation of sensor node using Solar Cell. Also, monitoring data gathering and voltage Analysis showed energy harvesting time of Sola Cell battery for sensor node and operation of sensor node.

  • This paper presents a new overall system for state-of-available-power (SoAP) prediction for a lithium-ion battery pack. The essential part of this method is based on an adaptive network architecture which utilizes both fuzzy model (FIS) and artificial neural network (ANN) into the framework of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). While battery aging proceeds, the system is capable of delivering accurate power prediction not only for room temperature, but also at lower temperatures at which power prediction is most challenging. Due to design property of ANN, the network parameters are adapted on-line to the current battery states (state-of-charge (SoC), state-of-health (SoH), temperature). SoC is required as an input parameter to SoAP module and high accuracy is crucial for a reliable on-line adaptation. Therefore, a reasonable way to determine the battery state variables is proposed applying a combination of several partly different algorithms. Among other SoC boundary estimation methods, robust extended Kalman filter (REKF) for recalibration of amp hour counters was implemented. ANFIS then achieves the SoAP estimation by means of time forward voltage prognosis (TFVP) before a power pulse occurs. The trade-off between computational cost of batch-learning and accuracy during on-line adaptation was optimized resulting in a real-time system with TFVP absolute error less than 1%. The verification was performed on a software-in-the-loop test bench setup using a 53 Ah lithium-ion cell.

  • The voltages of unit cells of a fuel cell stack are one of the most significant factors to detect failure conditions and thereof safely control and operate the fuel cell system. In this paper, we describe two methods to monitor the voltages of the unit cells of a stack in consideration of data accuracy, circuit extensibility to various numbers of cells, and cost. The reported methods are approached by (i) the power isolation of cell voltage monitoring part from the communications part and (ii) the utilization of a commercially available cell monitoring integrated circuit IC of a Li-ion battery.
