  • In case that limited resources can be mobilized, non-structural countermeasures such as 'monitoring using Information and Communication Technology might be one of solutions to mitigate disaster risks. Having established the monitoring system, operational and maintenance costs to maximize the effectiveness might trouble the authority concerned or duty attendant who is in charge. In this respect, "Guerrilla Sensor" would be very cost effective because of the inherent mobility characteristic. The sensor device with the IRIS camera and GPS (Global Positioning System) equipped, is basically battery-operated and communicates with WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access). It has a strong advantage of capabilities for 'Disaster Response' with immediate and prompt action on the spot, making the best use of IoT (Internet of Things), especially with the mobile web. This paper will explain how the sensor system works in real-time GIS (Geographic Information System) pinpointing the exact location of the abnormal movement/ground displacement and notifying the registered users via SMS (Short Message Service). Real time monitoring with early warning and evaluation of current situations with LBS (Location Based Service), live image and data information can help to reduce the disaster impact. Installation of Guerrilla sensor for a real site application at Gimcheon, South Korea is also reported.

  • $Mn_{1+X}Co_{2-X}O_4$ solid solutions with various Mn/Co ratios were synthesized by a combustion method, and used as cathode catalysts for lithium/air secondary battery. Their electrochemical and physicochemical properties were investigated. The morphology was examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the crystallinity was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. For the measurement of electrochemical properties, charge and discharge measurements were carried out at a constant current density of $0.2mA/cm^2$, monitoring the voltage change. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses were also employed to examine the change in charge transfer resistance during charge-discharge process. $Mn_{1+X}Co_{2-X}O_4$ solid solutions showed enhanced cycleability as a cathode of Li/air secondary battery, and the performance was found to be strongly dependent on Mn/Co ratio. Among synthesized catalysts, $Mn_{1.5}Co_{1.5}O_4$ exhibited the best performance and cycleability, due to high charge transfer rate.

  • Smart sensors densely distributed over structures can provide rich information for structural monitoring using their onboard wireless communication and computational capabilities. However, issues such as time synchronization error, data loss, and dealing with large amounts of harvested data have limited the implementation of full-fledged systems. Limited network resources (e.g. battery power, storage space, bandwidth, etc.) make these issues quite challenging. This paper first investigates the effects of time synchronization error and data loss, aiming to clarify requirements on synchronization accuracy and communication reliability in SHM applications. Coordinated computing is then examined as a way to manage large amounts of data.

  • A technique which uses the energy for a long time have been recognized as a important problem in embedded system with restricted battery. Recently the energy consumption is increased by using a large size of TFT-LCD and touch screen in embedded system. In this paper, we studied the frame buffer monitoring which can be reduced an energy consumption in GUI. The frame buffer monitoring technique is the energy degrade plan which adjusts Refresh-rate and Backlight. The technique must guarantee the quality of screen.

  • An electric vehicle operates at high currents and requires real-time monitoring of the entire system for ensuring efficiency and safety of the vehicle. Current sensors are applied to drive the motors, inverters, and battery control systems, and are the key components to ensure constant monitoring of the magnitude and waveforms of the operating current. In this study, a heat treatment process condition to influence the performance of Permalloy current sensors was developed; the correlation between the output capacity, low-temperature characteristics, and high-temperature characteristics of the current sensor was studied; and the process was optimized to meet the required output accuracy and temperature characteristics.

  • An oil tracking system that monitors the spilt oil trajectory by using GPS was developed. The system consists of a tracking buoy deployed on the oil spilt area and an onshore(or onboard) monitoring station. The tracking buoy is equipped with GPS, signal converter, handy radio and battery while the monitoring station includes a station radio, signal converter, antennas and PC. The hull shape of buoy is designed to effectively simulate the spilt oil movement at sea surface. Radio sets for HAM are used as a data transmitter and a data receiving station, and signal converter is also for amateur use. A field experiment was conducted and it was shown that the integrated system is relable and robust. The developed oil tracking system reveals reatively good performance at reasonable cost. In favorable environment the system may communicate in the distance more than 50km.
