  • The objective of this study is to develop a high ductile fiber reinforced mortar, ECC(Engineered Cementitious Composite) with using raw material commercially available in Korea. A single fiber pullout test and a wedge splitting test were employed to measure the bond properties in a matrix and the fracture toughness of mortar matrix respectively, which are used for designing mix proportion suitable for achieving strain-hardening behavior at a composite level. Test results showed that the properties tended to increase with decreasing water-cement ratio. A high ductile fiber reinforced mortar has been developed by employing micromechanics-based design procedure. Micromechanical analysis was initially peformed to properly select water-cement ratio, and then basic mixture proportion range was determined based on workability considerations, including desirable fiber dispersion without segregation. Subsequent direct tensile tests were performed on the composites with W/C's of 47.5% and 60% at 28 days that the fiber reinforced mortar exhibited high ductile uniaxial tension property, represented by a maximum strain capacity of 2.2%, which is around 100 times the strain capacity of normal concrete. Also, compressive tests were performed to examine high ductile fiber reinforced mortar under the compression. The test results showed that the measured value of compressive strength was from 26MPa to 34 MPa which comes under the strength of normal concrete at 28 days.

  • Plastic has been widely used in modern artworks' materials due to its merits of process ability and mass production. In the country, value of plastic artifact is increasing but the field of plastic study is limited to industrial purpose. In this study, Identification methods of plastic were performed by SPME-GC/MS and pyrolysis-GC/MS using trace of samples. As a result of identification using SPME-GC/MS, aromatic compounds were identified from polyvinyl chloride. And alkane compounds were identified from polyethylene, and polypropylene. Aromatic compounds were identified from polystyrene, and diethylene glycol appeared in polyurethane based on polyester was identified from polyurethane. As a result of identification using pyrolysis- GC/MS, aliphatic alkenes compounds and phthalate(DEHP) were identified from polyvinyl chloride. Aliphatic alkenes compounds and phthalate(DIBP) were detected from polyethylene. 1-hexene, etc., were detected from polypropylene, aromatic compounds were identified from polystyrene, and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate which is polyurethane basic material was confirmed from polyurethane. This study suggested that non-destructive SPME and pyrolysis-GC/MS are useful to identify compounds particularly polystyrene and polyurethane. These two analytical methods were expected to be applied for identification of unidentified plastic artworks before conservation treatment.

  • This study were conducted the particle-size analysis on 57 blue pigments to understand the step distribution characteristics of blue pigments made out of Azurite by using Malvern's Mastersizer 2000. As the result, most of the conventional blue pigments in Korea, Japan, and Chinese showed good granularity step separation except for few, and the smaller the particle, the more the Span value increased and the wider the granularity distribution range. On the basis of Friedman and Sanders's Grain size, most of the pigments were sand size to silt size. 72.2% of B-100 was clay size and 2.5% of A-14 was gravel size. Even the same components can differ by the grain size directly affecting the important property such as color formation, oil absorption, specific gravity, usability, etc. so the information about the granularity distribution would be used for basic data to deal with natural pigments.

  • One of recent methods to protect wooden cultural assets from fire, there is the flame retardation which is applied directly to wood and it is to prevent fire through securing flame resistance for the material and delaying combustion when failed fire in advance and then to gain time for people in the room to evacuate and it has same goal with the Korean Fire Service Act by protecting life and property. However, in case of spraying flame retardant on the colored surface of the wooden cultural assets, there are continuous problems of decoloration, efflorescence and water absorbtion after sometime and accordingly there increases danger of damages of cultural assets. So when treating with flame retardant on wooden cultural assets, there has to be no problems on dancheong after sometime and securing sustainable methods for flmae retardation should be preceded. Accordingly, this study aims to provide basic sources for selecting proper flame retardation methods by evaluating and analyzing flame retardation capabilities according to types of flame retardants which are frequently used nowadays and spraying them on the dancheong-painted surface and confirming if there is no problem on the dancheong and wood after sometime and if flame retardation effect is sustainable with its quality and capability through precise analysis.

  • The gold textile is Korean traditional weaving technique using the gold thread since 5th century. The making technique of gold thread was written in various references, but it is severed because the gold thread weaving equipment and sumptuous moods were forbidden in the early 18th century. There are some studies of traditional gold thread which are mainly about conservation treatment of cleaning and strength. To restore traditional gold thread, investigation of material and manufacturing technique is vitally required. The gold threads are composed of gold leaf, adhesive and base sheet. Gold leaf and base sheet are available for investigation because they are exposed to the surface, whereas adhesive is not easy to investigate because it is not exposed to the surface. In this study, samples are made of pure and impure gold, animal glue and lacquer, and various types of Hanji based on domestic and foreign references to compare materials for gold threads. As a result of morphological character and stability evaluation, the optimum materials for the restoration of gold threads are pure gold, animal glue and Dochimji(smoothing paper by beating). This study is expected to be basic data for manufacturing gold threads techniques and modernization of traditional gold threads hereafter research.

  • There are many factors to influence the amount of terpene at the forest. However, it is poorly understood whether the amount is altered by meteorological factors. In order to study correlation analysis between terpene amount and meteorological(i.e., temperature, humidity, wind speed, solar radiation) and environmental factors(i.e., oxygen, carbonb dioxide) at the artificial coniferous forest of Chamaecyparis obtusa (site 1) and Cryptomeria japonica (site 2) nearby the $1^{st}$ reservoir at Mt. Moodeung, the research was executed during April to November in 2011. Forest density at site 1 was 1,692 trees/ha, being occupied with 87.2% of Chamaecyparis obtusa, higher than 925 trees/ha at site 2. Carbon dioxide at site 1 was in the range of 385~410 ppm in June, similar to at Anmyundo(395 ppm in 2010). Solar radiation has positive correlation with ambient temperature and inversely negative with relative humidity. Main species of terpene released were ${\alpha}$-pinene, camphene, ${\beta}$-pinene, cymene, ${\delta}$-limonene and camphor at two sites and terpene was more effluent at spring and summer than at fall. The large amount of terpene was emitted in the afternoon than in the morning under the influence of the wind speed and the topographical property. The terpene amount has positive correlation with relative humidity and oxygen, and negative with wind speed and soil temperature. Because correlations of ${\alpha}$-pinene and other terpene materials showed statistically significant within p=0.01. ${\alpha}$-pinene could be suggested as the basic material in explaining the amount of other terpene materials.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of CFBC artificial fine aggregate as a substitute for natural aggregate used in dry mortar. The basic performance of the flow, compressive strength and dry shrinkage of the dry mortar was evaluated. Four types of test dry mortar specimens using natural aggregate without expansion admixture, a specimen with modified CaO expansion admixture and natural aggregate, a specimen with modified CaO expansion admixture and CFBC artificial fine aggregate, and a specimen using CFBC artificial fine aggregate without modified CaO expansion admixture were evaluated respectively. As a result of evaluation of drying shrinkage performance at 20th day of age, the dry shrinkage performance of the specimen using modified CaO expansion admixture was found to be the highest at $250{\times}10^{-6}$. On the other hand, the specimen containing the modified CaO expansion admixture with CFBC artificial aggregate exhibited a shrinkage of $410{\times}10^{-6}$, and the drying shrinkage of specimen using natural fine aggregate without expansion admixture was $450{\times}10^{-6}$. When the modified CaO expansion material was used, and exhibited performance equal to or higher than that of the shrinkage-drying property.
