  • In this paper, we described intra prediction which is the one of techniques to be used for higher compression performance in H.264/AVC and proposed the design of intra predictor for efficient intra prediction mode processing. The proposed system is consist of processing elements, precomputation processing elements, an intra prediction controller, an internal memory and a register controller. The proposed system needs the reduced the computation cycles by using processing elements and precomputation processing element and also needs the reduced the number of access time to external memory by using internal memory and registers architecture. We designed the proposed system with Verilog-HDL and verified with suitable test vectors which are encoded YUV files. The proposed architecture belongs to the baseline profile of H.264/AVC decoder and is suitable for portable devices such as cellular phone with the size of $176{\times}144$. As a result of experiment, the performance of the proposed intra predictor is about 60% higher than that of the previous one.

  • This paper presents a method of optimizing the blade pitch and generator torque controllers which have been already designed for an existing wind turbine generator system. Since the highly nonlinear and uncertain characteristics of the wind turbine generator can not be fully considered in the controller design phase, some parameters such as control gains must be tuned during the field implementation phase. In this paper, nonlinear simulation software, which is based high fidelity wind turbine model, and optimization technique are effectively combined and used to tune a set of gains for the blade pitch and the generator torque controllers. Simulation results show that the baseline controllers can be effectively optimized to reduce the errors in wind turbine rotor speed and generator power output controls as well as twisting of the high and low speed shafts.

  • In transportation missions using quadrotor, the payload may change the model parameters, such as mass, moment of inertia, and center of gravity. Moreover, if position of the payload is constantly changing during flight, the effect can adversely affect the control performances. To handle this issue, we suggest Model Reference Adaptive Control based on Linear Quadratic Regulator(LQR+MRAC) to compensate the uncertainty caused by payload. Firstly, the mathematical modeling with the fixed payload is derived. Second, Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) is used to design the reference model and baseline controller. Also, through the Stability method, Adaptive law is derived to estimate the model parameters. To verify the performance of proposed control scheme, we compared LQR and LQR+MRAC in situations where uncertainties exist. And, when the disturbance exist, the classic MRAC and proposed controller is compared to analyze the transient response and robustness.

  • The topic of this study is the control strategy of a mild hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). A brief powertrain and vehicle configuration is introduced followed by the control strategy of the HEV with emphasis on two key parts. One of them is an ideal operating surface (IOS) that operates the CVT powertrain optimally from the viewpoint of the tank-to-wheel efficiency. The other is a charge sustaining energy management to maintain the battery state of charge (SOC) within an appropriate level. The fuel economy simulation results of the HEV over standard driving cycles were compared with those of the baseline vehicle. Depending on the driving cycle, 1.3-20% fuel saving potential is predicted by the mild hybridisation using an integrated starter alternator (ISA). The detailed energy flow analysis shows that the majority of the improvement comes from the idle stop function and the benefits for electrical accessories. Additionally, the differences between the initial and the final SOC are in the range $-1.0{\sim}+3.8%$ in the examined cycle.

  • Active control of on-orbit spacecraft jitter is a significant problem for future spacecraft mission requiring stringent pointing performance. Jitter is major disturbance source degrading payload pointing performance. Both passive and active jitter isolation techniques have been studied during the last decade. We present active jitter isolation for a model device in this work. The device provides active control capability by 3 degree-of-freedom control of payload in feedback control strategy. Mathematical modeling of the device is pursued which is naturally used for a baseline controller design. Simulation results are used to validate the designed control law.

  • A cable stayed bridge under construction has low structural damping and is not as stable as the completed bridge. Control countermeasures, such as the installation of energy dissipating devices, are thus required. In this study, the general procedure and key issues on adopting an active control device, the active mass damper (AMD), for vibration control of cable stayed bridges under construction were studied. Taking a typical cable stayed bridge as the prototype structure; a lab-scale test structure was designed and fabricated firstly. A baseline FEM model was then setup and updated according to the modal parameters measured from vibration test on the structure. A numerical study to simulate the bridge-AMD control system was conducted and an efficient LQG-based controller was designed. Based on that, an experimental implementation of AMD control of the transverse vibration of the bridge model was performed. The results from numerical simulation and experimental study verified that the AMD-based active control was feasible and efficient for reducing dynamic responses of a complex structural system. Moreover, the discussion made in this study clarified some critical problems which should be addressed for the practical implementation of AMD control on real cable-stayed bridges.

  • This paper analyzes performances of modules in implementing a programmable multi-format video decoder. The goal of the proposed platform is the high-end Full High Definition (FHD) video decoder. The proposed multi-format video decoder consists of a reconfigurable processor, dedicated bit-stream co-processor, memory controller, cache for motion compensation, and flexible hardware accelerators. The experiments suggest performance baseline of modules for the proposed architecture operating at 300 MHz clock with capability of decoding HEVC bit-streams of FHD 30 frames per second.

  • This paper improves existing 'fly-the-wire' based autonomous station-keeping system, suitable for geostationary satellite and introduces results of computer simulations conducted to verify the algorithm. The on-board stationkeeping system receives pseudo-range signals from two ground equipments located with long baseline, determines the orbit error in realtime and generates orbit control commands. To reduce fuel consumption, this paper proposes an on-board orbit control logic using modified fly-the-wire method. The modified fly-the-wire method de-couples error components into two dynamic modes, harmonic and linear motion. The harmonic error components are removed by applying output commands produced by feedback controller, and the linear motions are controlled by the correction ${\Delta}V\;s$ added to reference maneuvers. The reference maneuvers are generated through the ground based computer simulation and embedded or uploaded into the on-board computer with time tags. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithm is verified through a series of computer simulations.

  • This paper presents the digital signal processing submodule of a 100Base-TX Ethernet receiver to support 100Mbps at TP cable channel. The proposed submodule consists of programmable gain controller, timing recovery, adaptive equalizer and baseline wander compensator. The measured Bit Error Rate is less than $10^{-12}BER$ when continuously receiving data up to 150m. The proposed signal processing submodule is implemented in digital circuits except for PLL and amplifier. The performance improvement of the proposed equalizer and BLW compensator is measured about 1dB compared with the existing architecture that removes BLW using errors of an adaptive equalizer. The architecture has been modeled using Verilog-HDL and synthesized using samsung $0.18{\mu}m$ cell library. The implemented digital signal processing submodule operates at 142.7 MHz and the total number of gates are about 128,528.

  • For the analysis of the relatively volatile lead in blood by GFAAS(graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer), one can not raise the ashing temperature beyond certain degree due to the elevation of the baseline. Previous investigations showed that background is stabilized when the ashing temperature is raised to $700^{\circ}C$ using a matrix modifier. In this study, same result was obtained at the ashing temperature of around $550^{\circ}C$ even when the matrix modifier is not used and only Triton X-100 is used as a diluent, on an instrument which is equipped with both temperature and current controller(Shimadzu, AA-6501S) and thus the temperature control is fast and accurate. Background correction methods of $D_2$ arc and SR(self reversal) were reviewed. The results show that the absorbance is higher for the $D_2$ arc method, but the background correction is higher for the SR method.
