Categorical time series clustering: Case study of Korean pro-baseball data (범주형 시계열 자료의 군집화: 프로야구 자료의 사례 연구)

  • A certain professional baseball team tends to be very weak against another particular team. For example, S team, the strongest team in Korea, is relatively weak to H team. In this paper, we carried out clustering the Korean baseball teams based on the records against the team S to investigate whether the pattern of the record of the team H is different from those of the other teams. The technique we have employed is 'time series clustering', or more specifically 'categorical time series clustering'. Three methods have been considered in this paper: (i) distance based method, (ii) genetic sequencing method and (iii) periodogram method. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages to handle categorical time series, so that it is recommended to draw conclusion by considering the results from the above three methods altogether in a comprehensive manner.

Analysis of Wearing Propensities, Wearing Comfort, Mobility of Movement, and 3D Shape for Advanced Baseball Leg Guards Design (야구 다리보호대 디자인을 위한 착용실태 및 착용감, 운동기능성, 3D 형태분석)

  • This study conducted a survey to gauge the buying and wearing propensities of wearers of leg guards made for baseball catchers, as well as product characteristics of preferred leg guards. Data from the survey were analyzed to obtain basic data for the development of an advanced leg guard design. Degree of compression, horizontal distance, cross section view and outline 3D sketch were also analyzed from the 3D data of leg guards; in addition, mobility and kinematic analysis were conducted through a wearing test. The survey indicated that imported products dominate the current retail market because they are appreciated by customers in terms of fit, price, brand, and protection. Representative complaints of products were discomfort, pressure, and the heavy-weight of the leg guards in general attributed to overall structure and 3D shape. When the pressure was lower on the front area of knee, it feels better to wear and the average knee angular velocity during the up and down motion increased, which suggests a better design from a kinematic point of view. The knee is the primary part of the body responsible for any movement of the lower limbs; consequently, the degree of compression and support stability of the leg guards near the knee area are important factors to evaluate the performance of leg guards. The results of our study indicate significant opportunities for improvement in product design and the development of baseball leg guards along with an ergonomic design that considers the mobility of the knee, skin deformations is necessary to improve performance. The process followed in this study will be applicable to studies on other personal protective equipment for sports.

  • The importance of data analysis in baseball has been increasing after the success of MLB's Oakland which applied Billy Beane's money ball theory, and the 2020 KBO winner NC Dinos. Various studies using data in baseball has been conducted not only in the United States but also in Korea, In particular, the models using deep learning and machine learning has been suggested. However, in the previous studies using deep learning and machine learning, the focus is only on predicting the win or loss of the game, and there is a limitation in that it is difficult to interpret the results of which factors have an important influence on the game. In this paper, to investigate which factors is important by position, the prediction model for the Golden Glove award which is given for the best player by position is developed. To develop the prediction model, XGBoost which is one of boosting method is used, which also provide the feature importance which can be used to interpret the factors for prediction results. From the analysis, the important factors by position are identified.

Productivity Change and Relative Efficiency of Korean Professional Baseball Teams (한국 프로야구 구단의 상대적 효율성 및 생산성 변화)

  • Most of professional baseball teams are not good for business condition because of operation costs in spite of support of mother company. This study measured the relative efficiency and productivity change of the Korean professional baseball teams using DEA model and Malmquist Index for 2006-2008. The main results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, in case of efficiency of CCR for 2006-2008, the number of efficient professional baseball teams(CCR value is one) are two(Doosan Bears, Samsung Lions), two(Doosan Bears, SK Wyberns), two(Lotte Giants, LG Twins) respectively. Second, in case of efficiency of BCC for 2006-2008, the number of efficient professional baseball teams(BCC value is one) are three(Doosan Bears, Samsung Lions, LG Twins ), four(Doosan Bears, SK Wyberns, Samsung Lions, Kia Tigers), four(Lotte Giants, LG Twins, SK Wyberns, Samsung Lions) respectively. Third, average of Malmquist Index representing productivity change for 2006-2008 are 1.0615, 1.0293 respectively. These values mean increase of productivity. Results of this study can be used by inefficient professional baseball teams to improve inefficiency.

Suggestion of batter ability index in Korea baseball - focusing on the sabermetrics statistics WAR (한국프로야구에서 타자능력지수 제안 - 대체선수대비승수(WAR)을 중심으로)

  • Wins above replacement (WAR) is one of the most widely used statistic among sabermatrics statistics that measure the ability of a batter in baseball. WAR has a great advantage that is to represent the attack power of the player and the base running ability, defensive ability as a single value. In this study, we proposed a hitter ability index using the sabermetrics statistics that can replace WAR based on Korea Baseball Record Data of the last three years (2013-2015). First, we calculated Batter ability index through the arithmetic mean method, the weighted average method, principal component regression and selected the method that had high correlation with WAR.

A Study on Prediction of Attendance in Korean Baseball League Using Artificial Neural Network (인경신경망을 이용한 한국프로야구 관중 수요 예측에 관한 연구)

  • Traditional method for time series analysis, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) allows to mine significant patterns from the past observations using autocorrelation and to forecast future sequences. However, Korean baseball games do not have regular intervals to analyze relationship among the past attendance observations. To address this issue, we propose artificial neural network (ANN) based attendance prediction model using various measures including performance, team characteristics and social influences. We optimized ANNs using grid search to construct optimal model for regression problem. The evaluation shows that the optimal and ensemble model outperform the baseline model, linear regression model.

A Study on the Emotional Solidarity of the Club and the Spectators for the Activation of Professional Baseball (프로야구 활성화를 위한 구단과 관중의 정서적 연대에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the moderating effect of emotional bond in the effect of the congruence of self-image and the team's loyalty to professional baseball spectators, to enhance the effectiveness of emotional bond between the club and the spectator, and to suggest implications for establishing the club's brand marketing strategy. For this purpose, a survey was conducted on 500 professional baseball spectators, and the results of correlation analysis, stepwise regression analysis and hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS 21.0 based on 450 collected data are as follows. First, among the professional baseball spectators and the team's self-image, the realistic self-image factor had a significant effect on the club's loyalty. Second, it was confirmed that the congruence of realistic self-image moderated the effect of congruence of realistic self-image on club loyalty. This result shows that the formation of emotional bond has no influence on the congruence of ideal self-image and is related to the realistic self-image that the club is showing at present. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a marketing strategy that can highlight this effect by considering these points.

  • Purpose: This study started with an interest in sports culture-related content and aims to comprehend the application of traditional and contemporary cultural content to sport business. Research design, data, and methodology: The current study reviews related-documents, research papers, media reports, and a secondary data. The collected data were multiple reviewed via content analysis. Results: Findings are as follow. First, the study found that sports is born in religious rituals which are associated with human needs for survival and prosperity. Second, sports is sort of official format that inherent desire of human could be satisfied, representing play and game. Third, the current study discovered that sports could be cultural products such as literature and film. This is because sport has often been used as major themes in contemporary art production. Finally, this study included important cultural content categories, but could not cover all categories due to the limitations of the study. Conclusions: this study reviewed multiple literature to decode historical and anthropological meanings of sport. The finding presents the cultural traits and meaning of contemporary sport. Further implications were discussed.

Reexamination of Coach-Athlete Relationship Maintenance Scale in Pro Baseball (프로야구 코치-선수관계 유지 척도 재검증)

  • The purpose of this study was to prove a development and initial validation of the korean version of coach-athlete relationship maintenance scale that originated from the work of Rhind & Jowett(2012) in pro baseball. The items were then administered to 132 Participants(29 coaches and 103 athletes) completed the questionnaires of the coach-athlete relationship maintenance in First preliminary investigation. Maximum likelihood estimate was used to identify the latent underlying structure. In order to verify the validity of Korean version of coach-athlete relationship maintenance was administered to an independent sample of 273 coaches and athletes. Pro baseball coach-athlete relationship maintenance is consisted of six factors(25 items) with conflict management, motivational, preventative, openness/assurance, support, and social network. SPSS18.0 and AMOS16.0 were used to analyze the exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factory analysis and internal consistency, test-retest with bootstrapping using of the data in this study. The results of the pro baseball coach-athlete relationship maintenance scale had six factors with 25 items, and each six factor was positively correlated. Overall, this study verified pro baseball coach-athlete relationship maintenance questionnaire. Thus, suggest that path of comparing the differences between the first division and farm team by using the test of the structural model invariance across the groups.

A Multivariate Analysis of Korean Professional Players Salary (한국 프로스포츠 선수들의 연봉에 대한 다변량적 분석)

  • We analyzed Korean professional basketball and baseball players salary under the assumption that it depends on the personal records and contribution to the team in the previous year. We extensively used data visualization tools to check the relationship among the variables, to find outliers and to do model diagnostics. We used multiple linear regression and regression tree to fit the model and used cross-validation to find an optimal model. We check the relationship between variables carefully and chose a set of variables for the stepwise regression instead of using all variables. We found that points per game, number of assists, number of free throw successes, career are important variables for the basketball players. For the baseball pitchers, career, number of strike-outs per 9 innings, ERA, number of homeruns are important variables. For the baseball hitters, career, number of hits, FA are important variables.
