An Experimental Study on the Flow Around a Simplified 2-Dimensional Vehicle-Like body (단순화된 2차원 자동차형 물체주위의 유동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • An experimental study has been performed to study the effect of the base slant angle of a 1/10 scale two-dimensional vehicle-like body on its wake flow including the recirculating region, where the simplified shape of the body has been originated from a profile of a domestic passenger car. In the case of a Reynolds number based on the length of the model R=7.96*10$^{5}$ , the surface pressure coefficient, the mean velocity and the turbulent stresses have been measured, while the flow visualization technique using wool tuft has been adopted as well. When the base slant angle of the model is 15.deg., the free stream flowing parallel to the slant is observed to be separated from the lower edge of the slant, thus forming the smallest recirculating region. When the base slant angles are 30.deg. and 45.deg., the free streams are separated from the upper edge of the slant and the sizes of the recirculating zones are observed to be almost the same as when the base slant angle is 0.deg. From these observations, it is conjectured that between the base slant angles of 15.deg. and 30.deg. there exists a critical angle at which the size of the recirculating region becomes minimum and as the slant angle becomes larger than this critical angle the separation line moves along the slant towards the rear edge of the roof. Through the flow visualization technique, the existence of the two counter-rotating bubbles in the recirculating region has been clearly observed and verified.

  • It is well known that the characteristics of the induction machine depend on a great degree on the leakage reactance. And the leakage reactance is different according to a level of slant. So in this paper, we calculated the inductance per coil side. And the torque and speed characteristics are analyzed using a method base on the two-dimensional (2-D) finite element method (FEM) and on the circuits theory to model the rotor bar in a induction machine. The variable values of bar angle of slant are considered.

  • Velvet fabric has soft touch, subtle luster, and good draping property. Threedimensional simulated models of cylindrical monofilaments constituting the velvet fabric were prepared. Image analysis techniques were used to measure the reflected light from the surface of velvet fabrics and the simulated images of the pile fibers. As the angle of incidence increased, the reflectance from the velvet surface became lower. Most of the reflection came from the tips of the cut piles. Crushed velvet type also was modeled using slant cylinder models on top of a base plate.

  • A grating composed of elliptical cylinders (GEC), specially designed, is applicable to control of radiation heat transfer from a heated surface, as reported in our previous work. In this study, an analysis of radiation heat transfer is performed for a physical model in which the GEC is placed in front of a heated black-base surface and the major axes of the elliptical cylinders are inclined as a certain angle from the normal to the row of elliptical cylinders. Numerical solutions are obtained. Variations of the direction and the radiative energy concentration with slant angle of the major axis are shown for some parameters. It is verified that the GEC is able to widely change the direction of radiation heat transfer from the heated surface.

  • The flow around a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) has been investigated numerically to improve the resistant performance by modifying the hull form of the ROV. In the case of the base hull form considered in this study, form drag rather than friction drag was the dominant component of total drag. Subsequently, the surfaces that were most susceptible to local pressure effects were modified to give them a more streamlined shape. Eleven different hull forms were chosen to undergo surface modification for drag reduction. In addition, four different boat-tail appendages with different slant angles were installed at the stern to reduce the wake vortices that are induced by the local regions of very low pressure. Consequently, a total of 11 different hull forms for drag reduction were considered. The final hull form, which combined the hull for which surface modification resulted in the lowest drag with a boat-tail appendage with a 15-degree slant angle, resulted in a drag reduction of 20%.

  • In this paper, we investigated the characteristics of fatigue fracture on TB(Tailored Blank) weldment by comparing the fatigue crack propagation characteristics of base metal with those of TB welded sheet used for vehicle body panels. We also investigated the influence of center crack on the fatigue characteristic of laser weld sheet of same thickness. We conducted an experiment on fatigue crack propagation on the base metal specimen of 1.2mm thickness of cold-rolled metal sheet(SPCSD) and 2.0mm thickness of hot-rolled metal sheet(SAPH440) and 1.2+2.0mm TB specimen. We also made an experiment on fatigue crack propagation on 2.0+2.0mm and 1.2+1.2mm thickness TB specimen which had center crack. The characteristics of fatigue crack growth on the base metal were different from those on 1.2+2.0mm thickness TB specimen. The fatigue crack growth rate of the TB welded specimens is slower in low stress intensity factor range $({\Delta}K)$ region and faster in high${\Delta}K$ region than that of the base metal specimens. The slant crack angle slightly influenced the crack propagation of the TB specimen of 2.0+2.0mm thinkness.
