  • We have recently developed a cost-effective and pouch-type chemical vapor sampler which consists of a selectively permeable high density polyethylene(HDPE) membrane, aluminum/nylon barrier film, and adsorbents. Since the sampler mimics the actual adsorption process that occurs when the skin is exposed to chemical vapors, it can be applied to man-in-simulant test(MIST) to determine the protective capability of individual protective ensembles for chemical warfare agents. In this study, we describe the manufacturing process of samplers and results for performance testing on MIST. Methyl salicylate(MeS) is used to simulate chemical agent vapor and the vapor sampler was used to monitor chemical concentration of MeS inside the protective suit system while worn. Values of protection factors(PF) were also analyzed to provide an indication of the protection level of the suit system evaluate by MIST. The results obtained by home-made samplers(ADD samplers) and commercially avaliable ones(Natick samplers) showed no significant differences.

  • Enormous amount of waste oyster-shell (OS) has a major disposal problem in coastal regions. OSs have attracted much attention for recycling, because these are mainly composed of calcium carbonate with rare impurities. In this study, we demonstrate the calcareous deposit films on steel plate by using OSs on the basic of cathodic protection technique. The composition of the OSs was analyzed by wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. Carbon dioxide gas was pumped into distilled water to make carbonic acid solution for dissolution of OS. The calcareous deposit was characterized by second electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray diffraction. Corrosion rates were estimated by measurements of anodic polarization and immersion test. It is confirmed that calcareous deposits on steel plate are formed under all condition of cathodic protection by using waste OS from the SEM and EDX results. Calcareous deposits on steel by OS provide good corrosion resistance by acting as a barrier to oxygen supply to the steel surface.

  • Cathodic protection is recognized as the most cost-effective and technically appropriate corrosion prevention method for the submerged zone of offshore structures, ships, and deep-sea facilities. When cathodic protection is applied, the cathodic currents cause dissolved oxygen reduction, generating hydroxyl ions near the polarized surface that increase the interfacial pH and result in enhanced carbonate ion concentration and precipitation of an inorganic layer whose principal component is calcium carbonate. Depending on the potential, magnesium hydroxide can also precipitate. This mixed deposit is generally called "calcareous deposit." This layer functions as a barrier against the corrosive environment, leading to a decrease in current demand. Hence, the importance of calcareous deposits for the effective, efficient operation of marine cathodic protection systems is recognized by engineers and scientists concerned with cathodic protection in submerged marine environments. Calcareous deposit formation on a marine structure depends on the potential, current, pH, temperature, pressure, sea-water chemistry, flow, and time; deposit quality is significantly influenced by these factors. This study determines how calcareous deposits form in sea water, and assesses the interrelationship of formation conditions (such as the sea water temperature and surface condition of steel), deposited structure, and properties and the effectiveness of the cathodic protection.

  • Surface treatments act as a barrier between the environment and the concrete, preventing or retarding the entry of harmful substances and cutting off the transportation path into concrete. The effectiveness of a surface protection preventing the permeation depends on how close and strongly connected are the resin molecules. This work intends to contribute to a better understanding of the performance of protected concrete in chemically aggressive environments, by presenting results of ion diffusion and resistance to aggressive solutions of several hydrophobic agents and coatings used to protect concrete. Three different types of surface protections were tested: silicone hydrophobic agent, acrylic and epoxy coatings. The obtained results indicate that the overall performance of epoxy resin was better than the other selected types of protections.

  • Mechanical facilities in modern buildings and industrial plants become more important in the view points of energy and environment issues. However, mechanical construction fields are still considered as to be subjected to buildings, even though design and construction of mechanical fields in the construction production process is independent of other fields. Recently, 'Framework Act on the Construction Industry' has been revised since 2007. According to the revision, the barrier of general construction and specialized construction is collapsed and the construction company can register any type of construction classification if they are able to carry out the construction mission. The mechanical construction fields are exempt until 2011 because of the protection of mechanical construction industry. In the present study, the bidding system has been prospected due to the revision of 'Basic Law on Construction Industry' after 2011. The trends for development of mechanical construction fields has been also discussed.

  • This paper reviews the mechanisms effecting host defense in the mammary gland and assesses their possible in preventing of bovine mastitis. The streak canal is the first line of defense against invading mastitis pathogens, providing a physical barrier and antibacterial substances. The milk leukocytes are a second defense line by ingesting pathogens breached the streak canal by multiplication, physical passage, and propulsion during milking. Leukocytosis in milk and enhancement of the phagocytic defense machanisms of the udder were accomplished by inserting intramammary devices. Milk antibodies serum derived and synthesized in mamma tissue aggregate and opsonise bacteria, agglutinate and neutralise toxins, and inhibit. binding of bacteria to epitherial surfaces. Vaccination generally has been unsuccessful because protection is not absolute, but immunization is useful in controlling specific pathogens. Immunostimulant to enhance locally the protective nature of antibody-producing plasma cells concentrated in internal teat end tissue may be effective in reducing the occurrence of infection, but ineffective in preventing intramammary infections.

  • OLED display are extremely sensitive to water and oxygen. Developing a thin film encapsulation for this technology has for a long time been elusive. Vitex has developed a multilayer barrier consisting of alternating inorganic and organic layers which can meet the requirements for a successful protection for such displays. In this paper we will discuss the basic process, the model, the results on top and bottom emission OLED displays as well as the application of Barix layers on plastic to create flexible OLED displays. We will show that for displays all the requirement for the telecommunication industry can be met and that the we can scale up to a mass manufacturing process.

  • Deoxyribonuclease I (DNase I) is a divalent cation dependent endonuclease and thought to be a significant barrier to effective gene delivery. The only known DNase I-specific inhibitor is monomeric actin which acts by forming a 1:1 complex with DNase I. Its use, however, is restricted because of tendency to polymerize under certain conditions. We screened two random phage peptide libraries of complexity $10^8$ and $10^9$ for DNase I binders as candidates for DNase I inhibitors. A number of DNase I-binding peptide sequences were identified. When these peptides were expressed as fusion proteins with Escherichia coli maltose binding protein, they inhibited the actin-DNase I interaction ($IC_{50}=0.1-0.7{\mu}M$) and DNA degradation by DNase I ($IC_{50}=0.8-8{\mu}M$). Plasmid protection activity in the presence of DNase I was also observed with the fusion proteins. These peptides have the potential to be a useful adjuvant for gene therapy using naked DNA.
