  • Installing floating structures in a coastal area requires careful observation of the finite-depth effect. In this paper, a Rankine panel method that includes the finite-depth effect is developed in the time domain. The bottom boundary condition is satisfied by directly distributing Rankine panels on the bottom surface. A stepwise analysis is performed for the radiation diffraction problems and consequently freely-floating motion responses over different water depths. The hydrodynamic properties of two test hulls, a Series 60 and a floating barge, are compared to the results from another computation program for validation purposes. The results for both hulls change remarkably as the water depth becomes shallower. The important features of the results are addressed and the effects of a finite depth are discussed.

  • The aims of this study are to provide data on the ozone dosage control system and TRO sensor performance, to assess the performance of the degradation of total residual oxidant (TRO) neutralizer and to provide data on degradation rates of TRO in the ballast tanks, following treatment by the Ozone BWTS. This study includes the results of an evaluation of the TRO neutralizer, which was tested on the test barge. Accordingly, it has undertaken the evaluation of TRO degradation rates following treatment by the Ozone BWTS.

  • Ecological toxicity testing of the whole-effluent from the ozone ballast water treatment system was conducted as specified in the quality assurance project plans (QAPP). The growth inhibition test with microalgae, acute aquatic toxicity test with the Rotifer reproduction, toxicity test (or population growth) with the Rotifer, survival and growth toxicity test with larval fish and sediment toxicity test with amphipod were carried out to evaluate ecological toxicity on the movile test barge.

  • This study considers the motion response of multiple adjacent floating bodies in waves. As a method of solution, a three-dimensional Rankine panel method is adopted in time domain. For the validation of the developed numerical method, the motions of two adjacent Series 60 hulls and ship-barge model are estimated. The computational results are compared with other numerical and experimental analyses, showing favorable agreement.

  • Recently, floating offshore structure is studied as one of the effective utilization of the ocean space. And floating structure are now being considered for various applications such as floating airports, offshore cities and so on. The analysis of the dynamic response as it receives regular wave is studied. The finite element method is used in the analysis of structural section of this model. And the analysis is carried out using the boundary element method in the fluid division. In order to know the characteristics of the dynamic response of the floating structures, effects of wavelength, water depth, and wave direction on dynamic response of the floating structure are studied by use of numerical calculation.

  • The weight of a ship depends on the size of the ship. Normal lightweight of a ship is over 10,000 tons. So it is inevitable to divide a ship into about more than hundreds of lumps. Each of lumps is called as a block in shipbuilding. The sizes of blocks are decided by a yard's facilities. Among them lifting cranes are most decisive facilities. By block's size the productivity of a yard is decided very much. So it is very important to have a proper block division during shipbuilding. This paper refers to the recent trend of block division among yards. This paper would give an idea how to decide boundaries of blocks. Block division also decides both quality of a ship and work volume of it. These days the block erection method is changed dramatically due to use sea barge mounted crane for erection of a grand ring block. This paper explains the new trend of block division in shipbuilding.

  • Three-dimensional turbulent flows over ship sterns are measured by using the hot-wire anemometer and static holes in the wind tunnel. A conventional stern and a barge-type stern are adopted for the present study. Three components of mean velocities, pressures on the hull and six components of Reynolds stresses are measured. Longitudinal velocity contours are more parallel to the hull surface and weak bilge vortices appear on the barges type stern rather than the conventional stern. Those viscous flow patterns may have close relations to improvements of the resistance and propulsion performance, which have been verified in the towing tests. Measured data files are valuable for the ensuing numerical studies.

  • Exact solution on the vertical responses of ships having uniform sectional properties in waves is derived. Boundary value problem consisted of Timoshenko beam equation and free-free end condition is solved analytically. The responses are assumed as linear and wave loads are calculated by using strip method. Vertical bending moment, shear force and deflection are calculated. The developed analysis model is used for the benchmark test of the numerical codes in this problem. Also the application on the preliminary design of barge-like ships and VLFS (Very Large Floating Structure) is expected.

  • This paper describes, firstly, on analytical method of computing the eigenvalues of vertical vibration of ships, taking into account for the distribution of hull weight including added mass and the effect of shear deflection and rotary inertia. The frequency equation is solved by Galerkins method into form of numerical integration. Applying the above described equation, model experiment of vertical vibration was carried out in order to varify the validity of the analytical method of vertical vibration. The model, which was made of acrylite plate, was ship-shaped wall-sided vessel with bulkheads, deck openings, and fore and after peak tank at both ends. The results of experiments carried out both in air and on water showed that the observed natural frequencies and the observed patterns of natural modes of vibration were in good agreement with analytically calculated values for 2,3, and 4-node vibration.

  • This paper considers the numerical computation of added resistance on ships in the presence of incident waves. As a method of solution, a higher-order Rankine panel method is applied in time domain. The added resistance is evaluated by integrating the second-order pressure on the body surface. Computational results are validated by comparing with experimental data and other computational results on a hemi-sphere, a barge, Wigley hull models, and Series 60 hull, showing very fair agreements. The study is extended to the comparison between Neumann-Kelvin and double-body linearization approaches, and their differences are discussed.
