  • Construction of the Kyung-Inn Canal between Inchon and Han River water way of 18 kilometer length is considered recently. The canal may reduce traffic congestions between Seoul and Inchon, remarkably. Since the type of transportation system of the canal will be barge system, an analysis on the canal barge characteristics is carried out in this paper. The merits and demerits of various canal barge transportation systems are studied, respectively. Also, several barge connecting systems are studied and the corresponding characteristics are analyzed and compared. Optimal barge system is selected based on the simple modeling of the several barge systems and the relevant evaluations. Primitive design issue of the barge transportation system of the canal is also presented.

  • This study is on the spatial composition of accommodation area in accommodation barge. The accommodation barge which is used as living facilities for offshore plants' workers can be classified into Accommodation Work Barge, Accommodation Pipe Lay Barge and Multi-purpose Accommodation Barge. We study on the spatial composition of accommodation area in Accommodation Work Barge, most frequently used, through analyzing G.A drawings of the barges. The spatial composition has great influences into the convenience and amenity for workers' daily life in the accommodation area of accommodation barge. The spatial composition of accommodation area shows many characteristics not in horizontal arrangement on any deck but in vertical space arrangement on layers of decks. The particular types of vertical space composition can be classified into 'Centralized Type' and 'Dispersive Type'. These two types will be the basis of space planning for new accommodation barge.

  • This study is on the space planning of accommodation area in accommodation barge, which is a kind of offshore plant supply vessel providing workers with exclusive accommodation facilities. Firstly, the space layout of accommodation area is analyzed using the general arrangement drawings of 10 actually-built accommodation barges currently in use. Secondary, the design guides and standards for living quarters of offshore plants issued from overseas classification societies such as ABS, NORSOK etc. are analyzed and based on the analysis design guidelines for accommodation area of accommodation barge are newly suggested. Thirdly, a model of accommodation area in accommodation barge is set up and space arrangements and movement lines for each deck of the accommodation area of the model are planned. Fourthly, cabins, dinning room and galley, recreation spaces, and sanitary spaces of the accommodation area of the model are planned. The results of this study may be summarized as follows. An accommodation barge has 'barge deck' for small scale work and material storage, and 'accommodation area' for the living and resting of workers. The accommodation area is made of workers accommodation sector, service sector, crew sector and business sector. The interior design guidelines for accommodation area of accommodation barge should be made soon by Korea Register of Shipping.

  • In order to investigate the hydrodynamic interaction between the tug-barge and bank or ship which is crossing to the opposite direction, the towing simulations of tug-barge transportation were performed. Heading of barge, yaw moment and lateral force of tug boat were obtained by this simulation. The characteristics of results were analyzed and the safety towing method for tug-barge operation was proposed. In order to reduce the slewing motion of barge for safe towing operation, the speed of tug boat should be kept slow ahead state with shortened towing line as length of barge within the limits of the possible.

  • The manipulation of the device by hand while driving is a major factor to increase the risk of accidents, and the design of in-vehicle voice conversational interface that can compensate for this is being actively researched. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the use of the barge-in function of in-vehicle voice interface on user experience. Participants were asked to carry out two tasks, one for navigation and one for music play. We conducted a survey to measure the functional user 's experience after each participant' s tasks, and measured usefulness, usability, satisfaction, and emotion as user experience factors. As a result, Barge-in has been rated as the better choice for most experience factors. There was a significant effect on usability dimension in navigation task and significant effects on usability dimension and emotional dimension in music play task. So it was found that barge-in function had a positive effect on actual user's usability and emotional dimension.

  • Floatover technology has been widely used in offshore installation, which has many substantial advantages compared with the traditional derrick barge. During the topside offloading of a twin-barge floatover installation, the transport barge is side by side moored between two floatover barges. In this paper, the twin-barge model with the connecting hawsers and pneumatic fenders is established. Coupled dynamic analysis is carried out to investigate the motions of the barges under wind, wave and current environments. Particular attention is paid to the effects on system responses with different frictional performance of fender, axial stiffness of the hawsers and environmental conditions. The research results can be used for optimizing the parameters of the system and reducing the risk of topside offloading.

A Study on the Responsibility for a Barge's Safety Management in a Marine Construction (해상공사에 투입된 부선의 안전관리 책임에 대한 연구)

  • At marine construction sites, there are problems with regard to dispute on the responsibility of safety management of chartered barge and its legal issues. In general, demise charter with crew is used for barge charterparty which is committed to the marine construction. Although Chapter 5 of the Korean Commercial Act enact provisions regulating a Time Chargerparty and a Bareboat Charterparty, it is difficult to clarify where the responsibility lies with regard to the safety control of the chartered barge. For this reason, disputes on accountability arise when accident occurs in effect. As a result, parties of the charterparty shift the responsibility on each other and there is increased risk for occurrence of similar accidents. There is no legally required qualification for a head of barge workers who is in charge of barge management. It is not possible to demand the head of barge workers to take charge of tasks which requires professional judgment as a marine technician considering his daily work scope. Furthermore, the barge committed to the marine construction as a form of bareboat charter or equipment charterage is an object which should be managed by safety supervisor of the charterer's marine construction. The charterer bears a duty to manage the safety of the barge. Therefore, the charterer is generally liable for the damage incurred in the course of using the chartered barge.

  • It have been known that the probability of accidental happening in towing-barge is higher than that of other merchant vessels. Because the towing-barge is restricted in thier manoeuvring ability due to its towingline. A report from ministry maritime affairs and fisheries said that the rate of collision accident for towing-barge is $40\%$ high tlnn other transport system in sea. A number of researches have been carried out to improve the safety policy in the towing-barge sea transportation system by the gorvernment. This study examined the safety status in domestic towing-barge sea transportation system The registration status, safety operational policy and post accidental data were also examined A survey research of experts relating to towing-barge operation also was carried out to find the detailed of safety status. This study would be applicable to set up safety policy for towing-barge marine transportation system.
