  • An efficient numerical model of the modified mild slope equation, based on the robust iterative method is presented. The model developed is verified against other numerical experimental results, related to wave reflection from an arc-shaped bar and wave transformation over a circular shoal. The results show that the modified mild slope equation model is capable of producing accurate results for wave propagation in a region where water depth varies substantially, while the conventional mild slope equation model yeilds large errors, as the mild slope assumption is violated.

  • The presence of double red clump (RC) in the Milky Way bulge is widely accepted as evidence for a giant X-shaped structure originated from the bar instability. We suggested, however, a drastically different interpretation based on the multiple stellar populations phenomenon as is observed in globular clusters. Our discovery of a significant difference in CN-band between two RCs strengthens our scenario. On the other hand, recent Gaia survey provides trigonometric parallax distances for more than one billion stars in our Galaxy. These distance measurements would provide the important test as to the origin of the double RC in the Milky Way bulge. In this talk, we will present our preliminary results from Gaia DR2.

  • The purpose of this thesis is to identify the gardening method of Mus${\bar{o}}$ Soseki by looking into his works. Through this research, life and religious values of Soseki were studied, which gave a better understanding of the garden architect as an individual and seeker of religious truth. Among his works, the most widely known-four ponds, Eiho-ji, Erin-ji, Saiho-ji and Tenryu-ji were studied. The research found that based on the Zen of Buddhism, Soseki symbolized various philosophical ideas into space structures. In addition, through two gardening components, stone buildings and tributaries, he specifically materialized related themes. An absolute religious aesthetics of the creator could be found in the stone buildings that expresses the world of Buddhism and the Chinese letter 'Sim'(heart)-shaped tributaries. By experimenting new method away from a Chinese-style Japanese garden which was widely popular during his time, Soseki devised a garden as residential quarters of a high priest that can be set aside entirely for Zen-study, which became to represent Japanese garden style. If Soseki's gardening method had not been adopted, Japanese gardens could not have been developed as a personal garden that contains symbolic concepts. Unfortunately, in this study, to think of another Zen monk and Mus${\bar{o}}$ Soseki did not study is to compare. also the study on how another Zen monk and Mus${\bar{o}}$ Soseki's compare has to be continued.

  • A weld scallop is a small quadrant or half circle type hole installed in the weld line cross area for easy welding operation. Many types of T-bars with a scallop can be welded in a block assembly stage in shipbuilding. The difficulties arise from the fact that scallops are to be filled by build-up welding after welding of the cross line is complete. In this study, a non-scallop block joint welding method was developed using special type CBM (ceramic backing material). The wedge shaped CBM was devised to insert a CBM into just the V groove of weld line cross area without weld scallop. A saw-toothed shape was adopted for easy cutting of the unnecessary part in the CBM fitting process. The applicability of the developed method was verified through welding experiments based on the yard welding conditions.

  • In this paper we present a barcode reader to decode two-dimensional symbology PDF417 and propose a novel method to extract the bar-space Patterns directly from the gray-level barcode image, which employs the location and the distance between extreme points of each row or column of the barcode image. This algerian proves to be very robust from the high convolutional distortion environments such as defocussing and warping, even under badly illuminating condition. If the scanned barcode image is a result of the convolution of a Gaussian-shaped point spread function with a hi-level image, popular image segmentation methods such as image thresholding can not distinguish between very narrow bar-space patterns. The Proposed algorithm shows improved Performance over current barcode readers.

  • This study focused on the reconstructional point of Shinan ship-wreck that was excavated between $1976\~1984$. The wreck, which might be sunk in the beginning of the 14th century, is regarded as a vessel of Yuan dynasty, China. This paper tried to find out some structural characteristics and principal dimensions for restoration. The Shinan shipwreck's structural characteristics are summarized as follow, 1) The Shinan shipwreck is formed V-shaped cross section with bar keel, 2) The vessel is divided 8 holds by 7 bulkheads. 3) The ship has flat type stem and transome stern. 4) A rabbeted clinker -built is basically adopted on planking joint. 5) A wooden sheathing, which means a sort of protecting board against marine insects, is covered outside of the main hull, 6) For making an watertight structure, oakum and lime mixtured t'ung-oil are used along the seam of planking and bulkhead. 7) A V-shaped deep water-way exists at both deck side. 8) The shipwreck is believed to have 2 masts at least. 9) The shiptimbers are classified as Chinese Red Pine(Pinus Massonina) which is mainly grown in the southern part of China. Considering as mentioned above the structural characteristics, Shinan ship-wreck could be classified as Chinese Fu-chuan type(복선형) of sea-going ship. The Shinan ship's principal dimensions which are calculated on the basis of Chinese traditional shipbuilding custom, are as follow, Length overall(L.O.A). : 34.80m Length water line(L.W.L) : 24.90m Breadth(B.max.) : 11m Breadth(B) : 10m Depth at keel line(H) : 3.75m Draft(D). : 3.15m Freeboard(F) : 0.65m Ratio, length/breadth(L/B). : 2.26 Ration, breadth/depth(B/D) : 3.5 Height of stem : 7m Height of stern : 10m Displacement : ab.340ton.

  • In order to improve the seismic resilience of coupled wall structure, coupling beam with fuse has been developed to reduce the post-earthquake damage. However, the fuses often have a build-up I-shaped section and are relatively heavy to be replaced. Moreover, the fuse and the beam segments are usually connected by bolts and it is time-consuming to replace the damaged fuse. For reducing the repair time and cost, a novel quickly replaceable coupling beam with buckling-restrained energy dissipaters is developed. The fuse of the proposed coupling beam consists of two chord members and bar-typed energy dissipaters placed at the corners of the fuse. In this way, the weight of the energy dissipater can be greatly reduced. The energy dissipaters and the chords are connected with hinge and it is convenient to take down the damaged energy dissipater. The influence of ratio of the length of coupling beam to the length of fuse on the seismic performance of the structure is also studied. The seismic performance of the coupled wall system with the proposed coupling beam is compared with the system with reinforced concrete coupling beams. Results indicated that the weight and post-earthquake repair cost of the proposed fuse can be reduced compared with the typical I-shaped fuse. With the increase of the ratio of the beam length to the fuse length, the interstory drift of the structure is reduced while the residual fuse chord rotation is increased.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of inorganic composition and filler particle morphology on the mechanical properties of different self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs). Materials and Methods: Three SARCs including RelyX Unicem-2 (RUN), Maxcem Elite (MAX), and Calibra Universal (CAL) were tested. Rectangular bar-shaped specimens were prepared for flexural strength (FS) and flexural modulus (FM) and determined by a 3-point bending test. The Knoop microhardness (KHN) and top/bottom microhardness ratio (%KHN) were conducted on the top and bottom faces of disc-shaped samples. Sorption (Wsp) and solubility (Wsl) were evaluated after 24 hours of water immersion. Filler morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). FS, FM, %KHN, Wsp, Wsl, and EDS results were submitted to 1-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post-hoc test, and KHN also to paired t-test (α = 0.05). Results: SARC-CAL presented the highest FS value, and SARC-RUN presented the highest FM. SARC-MAX and RUN showed the lowest Wsp and Wsl values. KHN values decreased from top to bottom and the SARCs did not differ statistically. Also, all resin cements presented carbon, aluminum, and silica in their composition. SARC-MAX and RUN showed irregular and splintered particles while CAL presented small and regular size particles. Conclusions: A higher mechanical strength can be achieved by a reduced spread in grit size and the filler morphology can influence the KHN, as well as photoinitiators in the composition. Wsp and Wsl can be correlated with ions diffusion of inorganic particles.

  • Background: The Nuss procedure is a recently developed technique for minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum using a metal bar. Although its technical simplicity and cosmetic advantages are remarkable, applications have been limited to children with standard pectus excavatum. We report a single center experience of the technique that has been evolving in order to correct asymmetric pectus configurations and adult patients. Material and Method: Between August 1999 and June 2002, 322 consecutive patients un-derwent repair by the Nuss technique and its modifications. Among them, 71 (22%) were adults. For the precise correction, morphology of the pectus was classified as symmetric and asymmetric types. Asymmetric type was subdivided into eccentric and unbalanced types. In repair, differently shaped bars were applied to individual types of pectus to achieve symmetric correction. Result: Symmetric type was 57.5% (185/322) and asymmetric type was 42.5% (137/322). Eccentric, unbalanced, and combined types were 71, 47 and 19, respectively, Major modifications were bar shaping and fixation. In asymmetric group, different shapes of asymmetric bars were applied (n=125, 38.8%). For adult patients, double bar or compound bar technique was used (n=51, 15.8%). To prevent bar rotation, multipoint wire fixations to ribs were used. Major postoperative complications were pneumothorax (n=24, 7.5%) and bar displacement (n=11, 3.4%). 42 patients had bar removal 2 years after the initial procedure. Conclusion: The Nuss procedure is safe and effective. Modifications of the techniques in accordance with precise morphological classification enabled the correction of all variety of pectus excavatum including asymmetric types and adult patients.

  • Poly(lactic acid) is expected to be one of the most promising biodegradable polymers. However, the high molecular weight polymer could be obtained by ring-opening polymerization process conventionally, which raises the production cost and decreases the final yield. In this study, linear and star-shaped poly(L-lactic acid)s were prepared by direct solution polycondensation method and their physical and thermal properties were examined. Tin compounds were found to be effective catalyst for the preparation of high molecular weight polymers. When 0.2g (0.5 wt % of monomer) of $SnCl_2$ and 100 mL of p-xylene were used, the polymer yield and molecular weight were relatively high. As a means to obtain higher molecular weight polymer easily in the direct polycondensation system, dipentaerythritol(dipet) or pentaerythritol(pet) was introduced as a multifunctional branching monomer to provide a star-shaped poly(lactic acid). Moderately high molecular weight polymers with the inherent viscosity values up to 1.14 dL/g(weight-average molecular weight of about 140000 by GPC) were obtained and could be cast strong and transparent films.
