  • The feasibility of water supply as in-stream flow for Mangwall stream was analyzed in terms of water quality and cultivation periphyton using two different types of water resources (e.g., surface water and bank filtration from Han River basin) and three different types of media (e.g., tile, concrete and pebble). The concentrations of organic and inorganic contaminants from the bank filtration were lower than those from surface water by 17.5 - 55.0%. Using water samples collected from Mangwall stream, surface water, and bank filtration, chlorophyll-a, phaeopigment, and growth rate of periphyton were investigated. During 30 day incubation for each water sample, it was observed that filamentous cyanobacteria, Oscillatoriaceae, accounted for 98%, and water velocity of 5 cm/s was optimum for the in situ filamentous cyanobacteria growth. Also, it was deducted for water velocity and chl-a to have an inverse correlation. Meanwhile, the greater the specific surface area of media, the higher the concentration of chl-a. From these results, both water velocity and specific surface area of media should be considered as an combined parameter to deter the growth of filamentous cyanobacteria.

  • Iron and manganese contents are usually over the limit of drinking water standard (0.3 mg/L) in unconsolidated aquifer of river bank filtration site in Nakdong river. Surge block and air surging techniques used in this study are useful tools to remove the slime within gravels and pebbles, to increase permeability of aquifer, to provide oxygen into aquifer, and to discharge iron and manganese oxides from a well. Surging activity brought about $5{\sim}8$ and $5{\sim}9$ times decreases in $Fe_{(total)}$ and $Fe^{2+}$ contents, and also 10 times decrease in $Mn^{2+}$ contents compared to non-surging condition, respectively. Additionally, iron oxide and manganese oxide increased up $1{\sim}1.2$ times after surging. This result shows that air injection into the aquifer can help iron and manganese content decreased and in-situ treatment technology needs to be introduced in river bank filtration project in South Korea.

  • Biotransformation of inorganic nitrogens, which are possible contaminants of bank filtered water, in soil of near bank filtration site was investigated based on oxygen consumption and changes of chemical parameters in respirometer. Biotransformation activities of inorganic nitrogens at different conditions of pH. water content. and added initial${NH_4}_2$$SO_4$were compared. At original low pH and 20% of water content, nearly no biotransformation activity of inorganic nitrogen was observed, in addition, control and NH$_4$-added sets did not show any significant differences of oxygen consumption. Among tested conditions, the highest activity was observed at 25% water content and pH 8. Nearly 98% nitrification activity was observed at sets amended with 400 mg $NH_4$-N/kg soil as${NH_4}_2$$SO_4$in the condition of pH 8 and 20~23% water content. However, considerable activity of subsequent denitrification was not observed.

  • This study was carried out in order to reduce the installation expense of heating system for greenhouse comparing to geothermal heat pump and develope the coefficient of performance (COP) for a heat pump. For getting plenty of heat flux from geothermal energy. Surface water in river channel was used for getting a lots of geothermal heat by penetrating water through underground soil layer of the river bank that make heat transmission to passing water. The range of water temperature after the process of Ground filtration is 13~18 degrees celsius which is very similar to low heat source of geothermal heat pump system and the plenty amount of heat source from that make the number of geothermal heat exchanging hole and the expense for geothermal heat exchanger construction reduced. Drainage well is also used for returning filtration water to the aquifer that keep the water good recirculation from losing geothermal heat and water resource. For the COP improvement of Heat pump, thermal storage tank with separating insulation plate according to the temperature difference make the COP of Heat pump that is similar to thermal storage tank with diffuser. Developed thermal storage tank make construction expense cheaper than customarily used one's. and that sand filter and oxidation sand (FELOX) are going to be used for improving ground filtration water quality that make heat exchanger efficiency better. All above developed component skill are going to be set on the Ground filtration water source heat pump system and applied for medium, large scale for protected greenhouse in riverside area and on-site experiment is going to do for optimizing the heating system function and overcome the problem happening in the process of on-site application afterward.

  • A 2-D unconfined flow model is developed to analyze annual variations of groundwater level and bank filtration rate (BFR) for an experimental riverbank filtration site in Koryeong, Korea. Two types of boundary conditions are examined for the river boundary in the conceptual model: the static head condition that uses the average water level of the river and the dynamic cyclic condition that incorporates annual fluctuation of water level. Simulations show that the estimated BFR ranges $74.3{\sim}87.0%$ annually with the mean of 82.4% for the static head boundary condition and $52.7{\sim}98.1%$ with the mean of 78.5% for the dynamic cyclic condition. The results illustrate that the dynamic cyclic condition should be used for accurate evaluation of BFR. Simulations also show that increase of the distance between the river and the pumping wells slightly decreases BFR up to 4%, and thereby indicate that it is not a critical factor to be accounted for in designing BFR of the bank filtration system. A sensitivity analysis is performed to examine the effects of model parameters such as hydraulic conductivity and specific yield of the aquifer, recharge rate, and pumping rate. The results demonstrate that the average groundwater level and BFR are most sensitive to both the pumping rate and the recharge rate, while the water level of the pumping wells is sensitive to the hydraulic conductivity and the pumping rate.

  • Riverbank Filtration (RBF) is a kind of indirect artificial recharge method and is useful in obtaining higher-quality source water than surface water when procuring municipal water. This study evaluated optimal riverbank filtered water and the productivity of the radial collector wells on Ttansum Island in the area downstream of the Nakdong River, where Gimhae City is constructing a municipal water plant for the purpose of acquiring high-quality water. The RBF wells are planned to provide water to the citizens of Gimhae City through municipal water works. Groundwater flow modeling was performed with the following four scenarios: (a) 9 radial collector wells, (b) 10 radial collector wells, (c) 10 radial collector wells and two additional vertical wells, and (d) 12 radial collector wells. This study can be useful in determineing the optimum production rate of bank filtrated water not only in this study area but also in other places in Korea.

  • Geochemical studies on the alluvial aquifer system near the Nakdong River were carried out for the basic investigation of the estimation of artificial recharge for the river bank filtration. In-situ data do not show any distinct difference between the pumping well and river. Most of waters belong to $_3$ and Ca-$SO_4$ types and show high Mn concentration. In the borehole installed with Multi-Ca-HCOPacker (MP) system, Na, Ca, Mg, $HCO_3$ contents of the groundwater are increased with depth increasing. Cl and $SO_4$ contents of the groundwater show the lowest values at the bottom level (18m depth) and Mn content is very high at the middle level (13.5 m depth) of MP system. There is no distinct difference in the ${\delta}^{18}O$ and D values and tritium content between MP, borehole and surface water samples. The sulfur isotope data indicate that the possible sulfur source is dissolution of sulfate mineral from sedimentary rock. Strontium isotope ratio shows a little differences between the pumping well and observation borehole samples. Nitrogen isotope data indicate that the nitrogen of water samples is originated from fertilizer or organic materials.

  • The horizontal collector well is used to treat some weak points of the vertical well in the bank filtration site. In this study two empirical formulas(Milojevic and Petrovic) are selected to examine the applicability for calculating the yield of the horizontal collector. And they are compared with the compute simulation results for multiple wells. Milojevic empirical formula which considers the conditions such as aquifer, well location, the diameter of screen etc. is more applicable than Petrovic formula. Draw-down characteristics of horizontal collector was well simulated by using the computer simulation for multiple wells. The results are well agreement with Milojevic formula, and the draw-down and the retention time of the horizontal collector can be controlled by adjusting the angle of lateral screens.

  • The drawdown distribution due to pumping by horizontal or slanted wells is analyzed by numerical modelling. In the numerical modelling uses 1-D discrete element feature included in commercial groundwater modeling program FEFLOW (version 5.1) and the results are compared with the semi analytic solution which uses superposition of successive point sources proposed by Zhan and Zlotnik (2002). Results of the numerical modeling agree well with the semi analytic solution except for very near field region of sink sources. The drawdown distribution due to pumping in riverbank filtration(RBF) plan site can be evaluated quantitatively by the numerical modeling in this study.
