  • The Internet is one of the most infrastructure for information technology in school education. Providing the Internet with a proper bandwidth is an important element for efficient school education for information technology, especially because several instructional models based on new Internet technologies are under development. To support these instructional models, it is important for the schools to provide the proper Internet bandwidth wherever necessary. In this paper, the amount and pattern of internet usage in school were analyzed. Based on this analysis, we propose how to figure out a proper bandwidth for a different ladder of schools.

  • Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) has drawn many attention as a promising access network technology for FTTH because it can provide a high bandwidth with a low cost. Since the uplink bandwidth in the EPON system is shared by many users, it is necessary for an EPON system to have an efficient bandwidth allocation mechanism. To support QoS in EPON, the previous bandwidth allocation schemes employ strict priority queueing (SPQ). Since SPQ gives unlimited priority to higher service class, the QoS of lower service classes gets worse. In this paper, we propose Class Gated DBA (Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation) algorithm in which the bandwidth is requested / granted in a service class basis. To avoid the monopoly in bandwidth usage by higher classes the maximum bandwidth that is allocate to each service class is limited (fairness between services classes). In addition, to avoid the monopoly in bandwidth usage by some particular users, each ONU runs fairness bandwidth allocation algorithm within each service classes. Through computer simulations, it is verified that the proposed algorithm achieves a good level of QoS, and at the same time maintains a good level of fairness between both service classes and users.

  • This paper measures and compares the traffic of a series of Massively Multi-player On-line Role Playing Game (MMORPG). The purpose of this analysis is to characterize the MMORPG traffic and compare the traffic characteristics of those games caused by the game structure difference between 2D and 3D environment. The target game is 'Lineage I' and 'Lineage II' which represent world's largest MMORPGs in terms of the number of concurrent users. We collect about 280 giga bytes and 1 tera bytes of packet headers, respectively. We compare packet size, packet inter-arrival time and bandwidth usage of these two games. The MMORPG traffic consists of two kinds of packets: client-generated upstream packets and server-generated downstream packets. We observe that the upstream packet size of payload has grown from 9 bytes to 19 bytes, while the average payload size of downstream packets has grown from 37 bytes to 318 bytes. This asymmetry of growing rate is caused by 3D game structure. Packet inter-arrival time becomes shorter from average 2 milliseconds to 58 microseconds. Bandwidth consumption per client has grown from 4 kbps to 20 kbps. We find that there is a linear relationship between the number of users and the bandwidth usage in both case.

  • The emerging smart utility networks (SUN) provide two-way communications between smart meters and smart appliances for purpose of low power usage, low cost, and high reliability. This paper deals with a bandwidth-efficient communication method based on the hidden pilot-aided scheme using a precoder in downlink SUN suitable for high-rate multimedia applications. With the aid of the design of a precoder and a superimposed hidden pilot, it is possible to estimate the channel without loss of bandwidth. In the channel estimation procedure, the inevitable data interference, which degrades the performance of channel estimation, can be reduced by the precoder design with an iterative scheme. Computer simulations show that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional method in terms of achievable data rate, especially when a large number of subcarriers are employed.

  • Universal Serial Bus (USB) is one of the most popular communication interfaces. When USB is used in more extended range, especially configuring home network by connecting multiple digital devices each other, USB interface uses the bandwidth in the way of Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) so that the bottleneck of bus bandwidth can be brought under the heavy traffic. In this paper, the more effective usage of bus bandwidth to overcome this situation is introduced. Basically, in order to realize the system for transferring real-time moving picture data among digital information devices, we analyze USB transfer types and descriptors and introduce the method to enhance the detailed performance of isochronous transfer that is one of USB transfer types.

  • Multicast technology allows the transmission of data from one source node to a selected group of destination nodes. Multicast routes typically use trees, called multicast routing trees, to minimize resource usage such as cost and bandwidth by sharing links. Moreover, the quality of service (QoS) is satisfied by distributing data along a path haying no more than a given number of arcs between the root node of a session and a terminal node of it in the routing tree. Thus, a multicast routing tree for a session can be represented as a hop constrained Steiner tree. In this paper, we consider the hop-constrained multicast route packing problem with bandwidth reservation. Given a set of multicast sessions, each of which has a hop limit constraint and a required bandwidth, the problem is to determine a set of multicast routing trees in an arc-capacitated network to minimize cost. We propose an integer programming formulation of the problem and an algorithm to solve it. An efficient column generation technique to solve the linear programming relaxation is proposed, and a modified cover inequality is used to strengthen the integer programming formulation.

  • This paper proposes a new dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm for an XG-PON (10-Gbps-capable passive optical network) system. In the XG-PON system, an ONU (optical network unit) does not explicitly send it request to an OLT (optical line termination). The OLT monitors the upstream bandwidth usage of the ONU to estimate the request of the ONU. Then the OLT performs a dynamic bandwidth allocation process based on the estimated requests.

  • The growing usage of multimedia communication applications with specific bandwidth and real-time delivery requirements has created the needs for quality of service(QoS). In response to the growing demand for an integrated services, the Reservation Protocol(RSVP) has been designed to exchange resource reservation among routers in the internet. RSVP protocol provides the quality of service for real-time applications but the network efficiency is reduced because of the limited bandwidth. In order to use network resources efficiently. We compare the resource efficiency of traditional reservation methods with that of the proposed method and evaluate the performance of the internet phone.

  • This paper researches and evaluates a bandwidth reallocation mechanism for efficient DiffServ QoS support in MPLS networks by monitoring the network traffic status and reallocating unused bandwidth. While the Differentiated Services in MPLS Networks architecture provides QoS management through the RSVP resource reservation, this mechanism is based on a static provisioning of resource. But this approach can lead to waste bandwidth in some service classes or, leave some service classes' resource starved. This paper presents the bandwidth reallocation dynamically based on network traffic status for bandwidth usage maximization.
