  • This paper presents a method to optimize the design of a planar-type antenna and reduce the number of design parameters for rapid computation. The electromagnetic characteristics of the structure are analyzed, and Taguchi method is used to identify critical design parameters. Adaptive particle swarm optimization, which has a faster convergence rate than particle swarm optimization, is used to achieve the design goal effectively. A compact dual-band USB dongle antenna is tested to verify the advantage of the proposed method. In this case, we can use only five selected geometrical parameters instead of eighteen to accelerate the optimization of the antenna design. The 10 dB bandwidth for return loss ranges from 2.3 GHz to 2.7 GHz and from 5.1 GHz to 5.9 GHz, covering all the WiBro, Bluetooth, WiMAX, and 802.11 b/g/n WLAN bands in both simulation and measurement. The optimization process enables the antenna design to achieve the required performance with fewer design parameters.

  • This paper presents a compact reconfigurable printed monopole antenna, operating in three different frequency bands (2.45 GHz, 3 GHz and 5.2 GHz), depending upon the state of the lumped element switch. The proposed multiband reconfigurable antenna is designed and fabricated on a 1.6 mm thicker FR-4 substrate having a relative permittivity of 4.4. When the switch is turned ON, the antenna operates in a dual band frequency mode, i.e. WiFi at 2.45 GHz (2.06-3.14 GHz) and WLAN at 5.4 GHz (5.11-5.66 GHz). When the switch is turned OFF, it operates only at 3 GHz (2.44-3.66 GHz). The antenna radiates omni-directionally in these bands with an adequate, bandwidth (>10 %), efficiency (>90 %), gain (>1.2 dB), directivity (>1.7 dBi) and VSWR (<2). The fabricated antenna is tested in the laboratory to validate the simulated results. The antenna, due to its reasonably compact size ($39{\times}37mm^2$), can be used in portable devices such as laptops and iPads.

  • Through-wall ultra-wide band (UWB) radar has been considered as one of the preferred and non-contact technologies for the targets detection owing to the better time resolution and stronger penetration. The high time resolution is a result of a larger of bandwidth of the employed UWB pulses from the radar system, which is a useful tool to separate multiple targets in complex environment. The article emphasised on human subject localization and detection. Human subject usually can be detected via extracting the weak respiratory signals of human subjects remotely. Meanwhile, the range between the detection object and radar is also acquired from the 2D range-frequency matrix. However, it is a challenging task to extract human respiratory signals owing to the low signal to clutter ratio. To improve the feasibility of human respiratory signals detection, a new method is developed via analysing the standard deviation based kurtosis of the collected pulses, which are modulated by human respiratory movements in slow time. The range between radar and the detection target is estimated using joint time-frequency analysis (JTFA) of the analysed characteristics, which provides a novel preliminary signature for life detection. The breathing rates are obtained using the proposed accumulation method in time and frequency domain, respectively. The proposed method is validated and proved numerically and experimentally.

  • In order to improve the Quality-of-Service (QoS) of latency sensitive applications in next-generation cellular networks, multi-path is adopted to transmit packet stream in real-time to achieve high-quality video transmission in heterogeneous wireless networks. However, multi-path also introduces two important challenges: out-of-order issue and reordering delay. In this paper, we propose a new architecture based on Software Defined Network (SDN) for flow aggregation and flow splitting, and then design a Multiple Access Radio Scheduling (MARS) scheme based on relative Round-Trip Time (RTT) measurement. The QoS metrics including end-to-end delay, throughput and the packet out-of-order problem at the receiver have been investigated using the extensive simulation experiments. The performance results show that this SDN architecture coupled with the proposed MARS scheme can reduce the end-to-end delay and the reordering delay time caused by packet out-of-order as well as achieve a better throughput than the existing SMOS and Round-Robin algorithms.

  • In this paper, we have designed a bandpass filter to apply the downconverter of the K-band Mu-hung-hwa satellite. To pass only the 25-30% of the bandwidth at the center frequency of 19.6GHz, we have designed a six-order interdigital bandpass filter using microstrip lines. Simulation result of optimization show that insertion loss is -0.275dB and reflection coefficient is -20.95dB at the passband frequency. measurement is determined center frequency, 19.150Hz, insertion loss, -4.1dB, input reflection coefficient. -l5dB and output reflection coefficient -l6dB.

  • In this study, we fabricated a 1.55um polarization-insensitive semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA) with rectangular buried heterostructure using a InGaAsP/InP double heterostructure wafer. Measured characteristics of the fabricated SOA are that 3dR bandwidth is 35nm and 3dB saturation output power is 4dBm. Maximum gain under the 150mA CW driving condition is 19.4dB. We measured the ASE(amplified spontanouse emission) Power spectrum or n and TM mode in the fabricated SOA using ASE measurement system and knew that distributions of the TE and TM mode about the maxinum region are nearly coincident. this shows the fabricated SOA is a polarization-insensitive.

  • The purpose of this study is to design for MOB antenna attached on safety helmet using microstrip patch antenna. The patch antenna is fabricated in 0.2 mm FR-4 substrate with $64{\times}64mm$ size. The proposed antenna is based on a slot-ring design which cover Inmarsat (1.52 ~ 1.65 GHz) and GPS (1.575 GHz) frequency band. To obtain the optimized parameters, HFSS simulator is used, and antenna is designed by optimized parameters. After antenna was etched, SMA connector was attached to the microstrip feeding line and the result between antenna simulation and measurement was analyzed. Proposed antenna is satisfied the -10 dB bandwidth requirement while simultaneously covering the 1.53 ~ 1.65 GHz.

  • Supporting user perceptual QoE-guaranteed IP-based multimedia service such as IPTV and Mobile IPTV, we represent an efficient QoE-aware transport stream assessment schemes to apply realtime mobile IPTV's contents distorted by various network errors such as bandwidth, delay, jitter, and packet loss. This paper proposes in detail an efficient matching and QoE-aware measurement methods. The brightness of the digitized contents per each frames of transport streams is used and applied to reduced-reference method. The hybrid video quality metric is designed by QoE-indicators such as blur, block, edge busyness, and color error. We compare original with processed source to evaluate them in a high precision degree of accuracy.

  • Open-ended coaxial probe is used to measure complex permittivities of materials in a wide bandwidth. Complex permittivity measured by a conventional coaxial probe suffers from severe fluctuation due to instrumental uncertainty when the difference between reflection coeffcients of reference and measuring materials is small. In this paper, open-ended coaxial probe with protruding inner conductor is suggested to increase the difference between reflection coefficients of reference and measuring materials. Its validity is assured by FDTD simulation and actual measurement.
