  • Recent advancements in broadband wireless communication technologies enable mobile users to receive video streaming services with various smart devices. The long term evolution (LTE) network provides high bandwidth and low latency for several emerging mobile applications. This paper proposes the buffer aware scheduling (BAS) approach to schedule the downlink video traffic in LTE network. The proposed BAS scheme applies the weighting function to heuristically adjust the scheduling priority by considering the buffer status and channel condition of UE so as to reduce the time that UE stays in the connected state without receiving data. Both of 1080P and 2160P resolution video streaming sources were applied for exhaustive simulations to examine the performance of the proposed scheme by comparing to that of the fair bandwidth (FB) and the best channel quality indicator (CQI) schemes. The simulation results indicate that the proposed BAS scheme not only achieves better performance in power saving, streaming delivery time, and throughput than the FB scheme while maintaining the similar performance as the best CQI scheme in light traffic load. Specifically, the proposed scheme reduces streaming delivery time and generates less signaling overhead than the best CQI scheme when the traffic load is heavy.

  • In video-on-demand(VOD) systems, a broadcast-based scheduling mechanism is known to be a very efficient technique for disseminating popular videos to very large client populations. The main motivations of broadcasting scheduling mechanisms are that they scale up extremely well and they have very modest bandwidth requirements. This paper proposes a new dynamic broadcasting scheduling mechanism, named FDBS (fast dynamic broadcasting scheme), and proves its correctness. This paper also evaluates the performance of FDBS on the basis of a simulation approach. The simulation results indicate that FDBS shows a superior performance over UD, CBHD, and NPB in terms of the average response time with very reasonable bandwidth requirements.

  • In this paper, we propose a scheduling scheme that can efficiently serve I/O requests having deadlines in flash storage. The I/O requests with deadlines, namely, real-time requests, are assumed to be issued for streaming services of continuous media. Since a Web-based streaming server commonly supports downloads of HTMLs or images, we also aim to quickly process non-real-time I/O requests, together with real-time ones. For this purpose, we adopt the well-known rate-reservation EDF (RR-EDF) algorithm for determining scheduling priorities among mixed I/O requests. In fact, for the use of an EDF-style algorithm, overhead of task's switching should be low and predictable, as with its application of CPU scheduling. In other words, the EDF algorithm is inherently unsuitable for scheduling I/O requests in HDD storage because of highly varying latency times of HDD. Unlike HDD, time for reading a block in flash storage is almost uniform with respect to its physical location. This is because flash storage has no mechanical component, differently from HDD. By capitalizing on this uniform block read time, we compute bandwidth utilization rates of real-time requests from streams. Then, the RR-EDF algorithm is applied for determining how much storage bandwidth can be assigned to non-real-time requests, while meeting deadlines of real-time requests. From this, we can improve the service times of non-real-time requests, which are issued for downloads of static files. Because the proposed scheme can expand flexibly the scheduling periods of streams, it can provide a full usage of slack times, thereby improving the overall throughput of flash storage significantly.

  • We consider differentiated bandwidth allocation for a piconet in short-range wireless personal network systems : Bluetooth. Since bandwidth requirements nay vary among applications/services, and/or it may change over time, it is important to decide how to allocate limited resources to various service classes to meet their service requirements. We propose a simple and efficient bandwidth allocation mechanism which meets bandwidth requirements of various service types while saving power consumption by a Power saying mode, i.e., sniff node. We compare our proposed mechanism with a conventional (weighted) round-robin polling scheme and show that it achieves significant improvement of hroughput, delay, and power consumption.

  • This paper proposes a new scheduling technique to play multimedia data streams in mobile terminals. The paper explores the characteristics of multimedia data streams , firstly. On basis of these characteristics, selection of specific data stream can be possible as well as transcoding protest. Our approach aims at reducing the early-stage delay time more effectively since it makes possible to select and transcodes some specific streams by employing a selection policy rather than transcoding all streams in the playing process Thus, this paper suggests a stream selection policy for the transcoding based on EPOB (End Point of Over Bandwidth). It aims to lower the required bandwidth of multimedia streams than the network bandwidth level and also to minimize early-stage delay time for multimedia streams, which is to be played in mobile terminals.

  • HPI system provides 1-3 Mbps data transmission speed to terminals moving up to 60 km/sec. Since HPI supports rtPS, nrtPS, and BE services requiring different QoS, it needs an efficient scheduling method based on those different QoSs. This paper suggests an uplink scheduling method which gives priority to services in the order of rtPS, nrtPS and BE services but which reserves some bandwidth for the low priority services before it allocates the bandwidth to higher priority services. Simulation results show that it can improve the uplink performance by reserving mean transmission rate to each nrtPS terminal and by reserving bandwidth, which amounts to about 1.5 times the mean transmission rate of the whole BE terminals, to the whole BE terminals.

  • GRID environments have been developed in distributed heterogeneous computing infrastructure for advanced science and engineering Therefore efficient scheduling algorithms for allocating user job to resources in the GRID environment are required. Many scheduling algorithms have been proposed, but these algorithms are not suitable for the GRID environment. That is the previous scheduling algorithm does not consider network bandwidth between multiple resources. In this paper, we propose a new scheduling algorithm for Global GRID environment and show that our algorithm has better performance than other scheduling algorithms through extensive simulation.

  • In this paper, we investigate the problem of achieving proportional fairness in hierarchical wireless sensor networks. Combining clustering formulation and scheduling, we maximize total bandwidth utility for proportional fairness while controlling the power consumption to a minimum value. This problem is decomposed into two sub-problems and solved in two stages, which are Clustering Formulation Stage and Scheduling Stage, respectively. The above algorithm, called CSPF_PC, runs in a network formulation sequence. In the Clustering Formulation Stage, we let the sensor nodes join to the cluster head nodes by adjusting transmit power in a greedy strategy; in the Scheduling Stage, the proportional fairness is achieved by scheduling the time-slot resource. Simulation results verify the superior performance of our algorithm over the compared algorithms on fairness index.

  • In this paper, we designed the bandwidth allocation scheme with priority consideration for upstream channel access of EthernetPON. The objective of our scheme is to control the multi services in more effective way according to their CoS(Class of Service) or QoS(Quality of Service). The designed scheme considers transmission priority in the both side of OLT and ONU. In the OLT's view, the Two-step scheduling algorithm is applied with which we can support multiple bandwidth allocation policies simultaneously, i.e. SBA for the time-sensitive, constant rate transmission services and DBA for the best-effort services. This Two-step scheduling algorithm reduces the scheduling complexity by separating the process of transmission start time decision from the process of grant generation. In the ONU's view, the proposed scheme controls 8 priority queues of the 802.1d recommended 8 service classes. Higher priority queue is serviced in prior during the allowed GATE time from OLT. The OPNET modeling and simulation result compares the performance of each bandwidth allocation policy with SBA or DBA only approach.
