In this paper, we design a two-step scheduling algorithm to support multiple bandwidth allocation policies for upstream channel access in an Ethernet passive optical network. The proposed scheduling algorithm allows us a simultaneous approach for multiple access control policies: static bandwidth allocation for guaranteed bandwidth service and dynamic bandwidth allocation for on-demand, dynamic traffic services. In order to reduce the scheduling complexity, we separate the process of the transmission start- time decision from the process of grant generation. This technique does not require the timing information of other bandwidth allocation modules, so respective modules are free from a heavy amount of timing information or complex processing.
This paper considers bandwidth allocation and scheduling problems on Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON). EPON is one of the good candidates for the optical access network. This paper formulates the bandwidth allocation problem as a nonlinear mathematical one and characterizes the optimal bandwidth allocation which maximizes weighted sum of throughput and fairness. Based upon the characterization, two heuristic algorithms are suggested with various numerical tests. The test results show that our algorithms can be used for efficient bandwidth allocation on the EPON. This paper also shows that the WSPT (Weighted Shortest Processing Time) rule is optimal for minimization the total delay time in transmitting the traffic of the given allocated bandwidth.
Adaptability is an important issue in video streaming over mobile environments, since the clients may request videos with great differences in their workload. In this paper, we propose the issues in limited bandwidth scheduling for efficient MPEG-4 video stream transmission over a mobile or wireless network. In the phase of admission control, the amount of bandwidth allocated to serve a video request is the mean bandwidth requirement of its requested video. The dynamic allocation of bandwidth in the phase of scheduling depends on the playback buffer levels of the clients with an objective to make it more adaptive to the playback situation of individual clients. In the proposed RTA scheduling protocol, more bandwidth may be allocated temporarily to the client whose buffer level is low. By employing the buffer level based scheduling policy, this protocol attempts to maximize the real-time performance of individual playback while minimizing the impact of transient overloading. Extensive simulation experiments have been performed to investigate the performance characteristics of the RTA protocol as comparing with BSBA protocol. This RTA protocol shows the better performance by transferring more frames than BSBA protocol.Computer simulations reveals that the standard deviation of the bit rate error of the proposed scheme is 50% less than that of the conventional method.

Data center networks provide critical bandwidth for the continuous growth of cloud computing, multimedia storage, data analysis and other businesses. The problem of low link bandwidth utilization in data center network is gradually addressed in more hot fields. However, the current scheduling strategies applied in data center network do not adapt to the real-time dynamic change of the traffic in the network. Thus, they fail to distribute resources due to the lack of intelligent management. In this paper, we present an improved adaptive traffic scheduling strategy utilizing the simulated annealing genetic algorithm (SAGA). Inspired by the idea of software defined network, when a flow arrives, our strategy changes the bandwidth demand dynamically to filter out the flow. Then, SAGA distributes the path for the flow by considering the scheduling of the different pods as well as the same pod. It is implemented through software defined network technology. Simulation results show that the bisection bandwidth of our strategy is higher than state-of-the-art mechanisms.

Scheduling technology is one of the most important elements required to support the Qos(quality of service) in the Internet and a lot of scheduling algorithms have been developed. However, most of there algorithms are not flexible in the distribution of the excess bandwidth. In order to improve the weakness of existing algorithms, DGPS(decoupled generalized processor sharing)has suggested recently. But, the DGPS algorithm is complex to implement and difficult to apply to the existing algorithms. In this paper, we propose a scheduling algorithm for distribution of the excess bandwidth which improves the implementation complexity of the DGPS and easy to be applied to ordinary algorithms.

As a standard of WMNs, IEEE 802.11s supports two kinds of MAC algorithm: a mandatory EDCA used by IEEE 802.11e and an optional MCCA. While EDCA classifies traffic according to four Access Categories (AC) and offer differentiated service using a classified priority, MCCA can guarantee the specific bandwidth of users with a TDMA-style bandwidth reservation scheme between mesh routers. In case that a flow is VBR traffic of a multimedia application, MCCA has disadvantage that the reserved bandwidth does not be used entirely, though it guarantees required bandwidth of users and fairness using bandwidth reservation with neighbors' node. In this paper, we showed a problem that is wastes the reserved bandwidth when MCCA is enabled and proposed a new scheduling algorithm to prevent waste of bandwidth and to improve network utilization effectively, named Resource Sharing Round Robin (RSRR) scheduling. Finally we showed simulation results that performance of a proposed RSRR is better than the legacy MCCA through NS-2 simulation.
Usually the static scheduling algorithms such as DMS (Deadline Monotonic Scheduling) or RMS(Rate Monotonic Scheduling) are used for CAN scheduling due to its ease with implementation. However, due to their inherently low utilization of network media, some dynamic scheduling approaches have been studied to enhance the utilization. In case of dynamic scheduling algorithms, two considerations are needed. The one is a priority inversion due to rough deadline encoding into stricted arbitration fields of CAN. The other is an arbitration delay due to the non-preemptive feature of CAN. In this paper, an extended algorithm is proposed from an existing EDS(Earliest Deadline Scheduling) approach of CAN scheduling algorithm haying a solution to the priority inversion. In the proposed algorithm, the available bandwidth of network media can be checked dynamically by all nodes. Through the algorithm, arbitration delay causing the miss of their deadline can be avoided in advance. Also non real-time messages can be processed with their bandwidth allocation. The proposed algorithm can achieve full network utilization and enhance aperiodic responsiveness, still guaranteeing the transmission of periodic messages.

A new scheduling scheme, which uses channel quality information of each flow in Bluetooth system of ad-hoc network for effective bandwidth assignment, has been proposed in this paper. By an effective bandwidth assignment, QoS (Quality of Service) could have been ensured in case of asymmetric data traffic, mixed data transmission, and congested data transmission in a specific channel. The scheduling algorithm determines channel weights using partial channel information of flows. Case studies conducted by NS-2 (Network Simulator 2) and Bluehoc simulator has been presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed scheduling scheme.

A new dynamic scheduling algorithm is proposed for CAN-based real-time system in this paper. The proposed algorithm is extended from an existing EDS(Earliest Deadline Scheduling) approach having a solution to the priority inversion. Using the proposed algorithm, the available bandwidth of network media can be checked dynamically, and consequently arbitration delay causing the miss of deadline can be avoided. Also, non-real time messages can be processed with their bandwidth allocation. Full network utilization and real-time transmission feasibility can be achieved through the algorithm. To evaluate the performance of algorithm, two simulation tests are performed. The first one is transmission data measurement per minute for periodic messages and the second one is feasibility in the system with both periodic messages and non-real time message.
UHD content is characterized by higher bandwidth requirements to provide seamless playback. The existing HTTP adaptive streaming scheme periodically requests video segment of lower quality than the available bandwidth in the steady state. In the steady state, the On-Off pattern is repeated due to the difference of the available bandwidth and the encoding rate of the content. And the repeated Off interval is causing the problem that can not efficiently use the available bandwidth. In the wireless environment where the delay and loss rate are higher with large bandwidth fluctuations, this problem is exacerbated because the available bandwidth is estimated inaccurately. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a segment scheduling scheme for efficient bandwidth utilization of UHD contents streaming in wireless environment. Proposed scheme is a group segment that simultaneously reqeusts multiple segments in one request message in order to reduce frequency of OFF interval. Through simulation, Our scheme improves bandwidth utilization.
