  • C-banded karyotypes of eight taxa of Korean Allium sect. Sacculiferum were examined by means of Giemsa techniques. Each of the taxa had their own characteristic bands. Most of the bands on the somatic metaphase chromosomes were mainly located on the short arm, intercalary region and medium sized chromosomes. In addition, the heterochromatic bands were usually facultative, recognized as two spots, and all investigated taxa had a pair of satellites of heterochromatin. The similarities of total length and number of bands revealed that three varieties of A. thunbergii G. Don have a closer cytological relationship than the others. The C-banding patterns of A. longistylum and A. linearifolium were examined for the first time in this study, and the former was clearly distinguished from the others by the distribution and number of its bands. The proportion of heterochromatic bands suggested that A. thunbergii var. thunbergii is the most primitive, and A. sacculiferum the most advonced, within the section.

  • This study describes the identification of Panax species using mitochondrial consensus primers. Initially, a total of thirty primers were tested in ten Korean ginseng cultivars and two foreign Panax species, P. quinquefolius and P. notoginseng. In the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification results, three primers (cox1, nad1/2-3 and nad2/1-2) generated co-dominant polymorphic banding patterns discriminating Korean ginseng cultivars from P. quinquefolius and P. notoginseng. However, these primers could not generated polymorphisms among the Korean ginseng cultivars, and simply represented species-specific polymorphisms for P. quinquefolius and P. notoginseng. Primers PQ91 and PN418 were designed from the consensus sequence of nad1/2-3 region. Two banding patterns (A or B) were detected in PQ91. Korean ginseng cultivars and P. notoginseng shared the same banding pattern (A type) and P. quinquefolius was identified another banding pattern (B type). In the case of PN418, two banding patterns (A or B) were detected in the Korean ginseng cultivars and two foreign Panax species. Korean ginseng cultivars and P. quinquefolius shared the same banding pattern (A type) and P. notoginseng was identified another banding pattern (B type). The combination banding patterns of three Panax species, Korean ginseng cultivars (Panax ginseng C. A. Mey.), P. quinquefolius and P. notoginseng, was identified as 'AA', 'BA' and 'AB', respectively. Consequently, PQ91 and PN418 primer sets can be used to distinguish among Panax species.

  • This study aimed at improving the method of oil cake application in maize. The experiment was conducted during 2 years at NAS (National Institute of Agricultural Sciences) experimental field, located in Wanju-kun, Jeollabuk-do. Growth factors and nutrient use efficiency were evaluated depending on oil cake application depth, placement, and application rate. Difference in oil cake application method and depth was tested in 2012 and different placements of oil cake application were compared in 2013. Plant height, SPAD value, and dry weight of stem and corn were investigated. SPAD value, dry weight of stem and corn were significantly higher in oil cake banding treatment (OB5, 5 cm depth) as compared to others application methods, i.e. spreading (OS0), deep banding (OB10) and banding + spreading (OB5S). In addition, dry weight of stem and corn of banding treatments (OBL, OBLL) on rhizosphere and in between row (OBR) were higher than spreading treatment (OSP). Furthermore, in case of reduced application rate in additional fertilization did not decrease dry weight of corn and increased nutrient use efficiency. Therefore, it is concluded that banding application in 5 cm-depth and rhizosphere can improve growth and nutrient use efficiency in maize production.

  • A Giemsa C-banding method was used for the identification of somatic chromosomes of Korean indigenous maize(Zea mays L.). Two Korean indigenous maize stocks and an American hybrid maize for comparison were examined. Ten deeply stained heterochromatic knobs whose position and size were different between the genotypes, two satellites and interstitial bands were observed. The length of homologous chromosomes compared by the relative lengths of chromosomes presented as a percentage of the length of chromosome 10 were different between the genotypes. The Giemsa method proved to be useful for the identification of somatic chromosomes and for the characterization of different stocks of Korean indigenous maize.

  • Interventricular Septal Defect is probably the most common congenital cardiac lesion. Despite rapid technical advances and increasing surgical experience the risk of surgical intervention for correction of Ventricular Septal Defect in infants with pulmonary hypertension remains formidable. Since Sirak et al [1959] reported a succesful case of two stage approach to their surgical correction, it has led to a policy of primary palliation, followed by complete correction as a secondary procedure, after age 3 to 4 years. Most surgeon prefer to perform complete correction of Ventricular Septal Defect when body weight exceeds 30 Lbs. and before development of so-called Eisenmengers complex, for the good postoperative results. Authors report 2 cases of Ventricular Septal Defect with pulmonary hupertenslon, who was underwent pulmonary artery banding as a palliative procedure in the Department of Surgery,Severance Hospital Yonsei University. Case 1:4 year old male, initially a complete correction of Ventricular Septal Defect was attempted by the help of mild hypothermia and extracorporeal circulation. During the procedure of a construction of an extracorporeal by- pass, a sudden cardiac arrest developed. After resuscitation of the heart, pulmonary artery banding was performed as a palliation. On the first postoperative day the patient developed generalized tonic convulsion, cyanosis, vomiting and eventually shock. Patient discharged home after a full recovery. Case 2.: 9 month old female, the pulmonary artery constricted with Teflon patch successfully. After the patients first postoperative day several cyanotic spells developed followed by 3 cardiac arrests. This repeated until when she expired with respiratory failure.

  • Control Banding (CB) strategies to prevent work-related illness and injury for 2.5 billion workers without access to health and safety professionals has grown exponentially this last decade. CB originates from the pharmaceutical industry to control active pharmaceutical ingredients without a complete toxicological basis and therefore no occupational exposure limits. CB applications have broadened into chemicals in general - including new emerging risks like nanomaterials and recently into ergonomics and injury prevention. CB is an action-oriented qualitative risk assessment strategy offering solutions and control measures to users through "toolkits". Chemical CB toolkits are user-friendly approaches used to achieve workplace controls in the absence of firm toxicological and quantitative exposure information. The model (technical) validation of these toolkits is well described, however firm operational analyses (implementation aspects) are lacking. Consequentially, it is often not known if toolkit use leads to successful interventions at individual workplaces. This might lead to virtual safe workplaces without knowing if workers are truly protected. Upcoming international strategies from the World Health Organization Collaborating Centers request assistance in developing and evaluating action-oriented procedures for workplace risk assessment and control. It is expected that to fulfill this strategy's goals, CB approaches will continue its important growth in protecting workers.

  • Exposure dose to the examinee was measured using glass dosimeter in the test using panorama device at the time of dental treatment. As a result of measuring expose dose to lens according to the different sizes of Pb banding of own manufacturing to reduce exposure dose to lens especially sensitive to radiation, it was verified that exposure dose to lens varied depending on the size of the Pb banding. With the size of Pb banding of $3{\times}20{\times}0.2cm$, exposure dose tended to increase higher than normal value, and with the size of or more than $5{\times}20{\times}0.2cm$, it decreased. And also, the obtained image with the size of $7{\times}20{\times}0.2cm$ was not suitable for diagnosis. Therefore, it is expected that exposure dose would be reduced by using Pb banding of the size of not less than $5{\times}20{\times}0.2cm$ and not more than $6{\times}20{\times}0.2cm$ in the test, to minimize exposure dose and conduct panorama test efficiently.

  • According to the results of this research, Production of Fold Concret Permanent-Form, was found to be possible by Concrete. The FCP-Form (Fold Concret Permanent-Form) Concrete had Compress strength 300kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and banding strength 120kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. FCP-Form Model was made by the result of the first research. There was no mimute-crack on beam form and The outer surface of form was very smooth, and Those qualities it were made possible hand-made by experiment. With these results, The Production of FCP-Form seemed possible. In the banding load test, P-S showed increase of maxim load 12% than P-R. At the first stage of minute crack, under continuing loading size of crack increased. These phenomena seemed to be based on contribution of stress of inner bars in FCP-Form. In the test of defection. P-S shower about 10% banding load increase than P-R. FCP-Form Concrete was found to be efficient in compressibleness, defection, safety and use of material.

  • We investigated the cytogenetic characteristics of male black-striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarium) in Korea. Chromosome slides were obtained from blood cell cultures which were synchronized with thymidine blocking or not. In the chromosome slide which synchronization with thymidine blocking was employed on, the GTG(G bands by trypsin using Giemsa)-bands of high resolution were observed. The male black-striped field mouse has 48 chromosomes composed 46 autosomes and XY sex chromosomes. The centromeric regions of autosomes were positive to GTG-banding. According to this investigation, thymidine blocking in cell culture process was useful to get lengthened chromosomes. It may be necessary to employ RBG-banding technique to investigate complementary band patterns between R- and G-banding in black-striped field mouse.
