  • In the present, the formation of shear band under a simple shear deformation is investigated using a rate-independent elastic-plastic constitutive relations. Moreover, the strain gradient terms are incorporated to obtain a non-local plastic constitutive relation, which in turn represented using combined two-back stress hardening model. Then, the continuum damage model is also included to the proposed model. The post-localization behavior are studied by introducing a small imperfection in a work piece. The strain gradient affects the shear localization significantly such that the intensity of shear band decreases as the strain gradient coefficient increases when the J2 flow theory is employed.

  • Many studies have been performed to predict a reliable and accurate stress-range distribution and fatigue damage regarding the Gaussian wide-band stress response due to multi-peak waves and multiple dynamic loads. So far, most of the approximation models provide slightly inaccurate results in comparison with the rain-flow counting method as an exact solution. A step-by-step study was carried out to develop new approximate spectral moments that are close to the rain-flow counting moment, which can be used for the development of a fatigue damage model. Using the special parameters and bandwidth parameters, four kinds of parameter-based combinations were constructed and estimated using the R-squared values from regression analysis. Based on the results, four candidate empirical formulas were determined and compared with the rain-flow counting moment, probability density function, and root mean square (RMS) value for relative distance. The new approximate spectral moments were finally decided through comparison studies of eight response spectra. The new spectral moments presented in this study could play an important role in improving the accuracy of fatigue damage model development. The present study shows that the new approximate moment is a very important variable for the enhancement of Gaussian wide-band fatigue damage assessment.

  • To determine whether antioxidant enzyme systems are related to chilling tolerance, changes of antioxidant enzyme activities during the chilling stress were determined in the leaves of a chilling-tolerant cultivar (Cucurbita ficifolia, cv. Heukjong) and a chilling-sensitive cultivar (Cucurbita moschata, cv. Jaerae 13). Leaves of chilling-tolerant plant have two major isoforms, Fe-SOD and Mn-SOD, at the Rm values of 0.20 and 0.52, respectively. In leaves of chilling-sensitive plant, two major isozymes of SOD was observed, one isoform is Mn-SOD at the Rm value of 0.20, and the other isoform is Cu/zn-SOD at the nm value of 0.58. When plants were treated with chilling stress, Cu/zn-SOD at the Rm value of 0.58 was newly expressed at 10 days after chilling stress in the chilling-tolerant plants, and density of this band increased at five days after chilling stress in the chilling-sensitive plants. One APX isozyme band was observed in unstressed plants of both cultivars. Under the chilling stress one APX isozyme band was newly expressed at 10 days after chilling stress in the chilling-tolerant cultivar. Significant genotype differences were observed fnr POD isozyme banding patterns such as few main isozyme bands in chilling-tolerant plants, and one band in chilling-sensitive plants. Densities of three POD isozyme bands at the Rm of 0.36, 0.40 and 0.54 increased at 10 days after chilling stress in the chilling-tolerant plants, while two bands at the nm of 0.36 and 0.54 increased at 10 days and 20 days after chilling stress in the chilling-sensitive plants, respectively. Activities of SOD, APX and POD significantly increased during five days after chilling stress in both cultivars. In the chilling-tolerant cultivar, activities of these enzymes were higher in chilling-stressed plant than in unstressed plants. However, activities of these enzymes in the chilling-sensitive cultivar decreased rapidly after five days of chilling stress, and were lower in chilling stressed plants than in unstressed plants.

  • This is the final one of the two companion papers dealing with accuracy of accumulated fatigue damage estimation under wide band process. It is stated that four kinds of wide band models exist: typed of equivalent stress, combined PDF, correction factor, and damage combination. For the idealized ESDs from full scale measurement data on an 8100TEU container vessel, fatigue damages are compared for a narrow band prediction model based on Rayleigh PDF and five wide band fatigue prediction models of Dirlik, Wirsching-Light, Jiao-Moan, Benasciutti and DNV. DNV model consistently overestimates fatigue damages regardless of variation of ESDs. Predictions by Jiao-Moan model, which is understood as standard method for design of offshore platforms, are also in conservative side. Best accuracy is found from the results by Dirlik and Benasciutti models, but Benasciutti model is preferred since it can easily combined with narrow band fatigue damage based on Rayleigh PDF.

  • In this study, residual stresses of the weldment were calculated by finite element analysis(FEA) and experiment. And, the crack closure behaviour and fatigue crack growth characteristics in field of residual stress of A106 Gr B steel pipe weldment were investigated under various stress ratio. Obtained results are as follows. I) $K_{op}$ was independent of $K_{max}$, and load ratio in fatigue crack growth. 2) In variation of load ratio, the scatter band of crack growth curve was reduced by half considering crack closure. and 3) Neglecting crack closure behaviour, actual fatigue crack growth rate can be underestimated' and Actual fatigue crack growth rate can be overestimated by $K_{res}$, in tensile residual stress field.

  • In order to investigation splitting bond strength of the deformed longitudinal reinforcing bars in the R C members strengthened laterally with the external steel-band, a total 9 sets of test re-bars with and without active confining force given by the external steel-band are pulled monotonically until failure. Test results indicate that the bond strength becomes higher with the increase in number of steel-band sets and their initial stress magnitude. This is due to the active confining force given by the steel-band, and passive confining forces given by the steel-band and transverse reinforcements, in which the passive confinement effect varies depending on the magnitude of active confining force. An equation to estimate the splitting bond strengths for the R C members strengthened laterally with the external steel-band is developed based on the several experimental results of the present study.

  • This study explores the influence of volume fraction of nanocrystals of Cu-Zr amorphous alloys on shear band formation. As the number of crystals with very tiny size increases, the strain localization, i.e. shear band, decreases without large drop of flow stress. The DPRs also depict no sudden drop and relatively high values. The strain state during the deformation represents a few shear bands at low volume fraction while there are no distinguishable shear bands at high volume fraction of nanocrystals.

  • Localized shear band is investigated through the analysis of one-dimensional model for simple shearing deformation of thermally rate dependent material. Generally mesh size or interval of nodes play an important role in determining the overall flow behavior of the material. In order to observe these size effects we adapted non-local theory by including higher order strain gradients of the equivalent strain into the constitutive equation for the flow stress. for the ease of convergence and numerical stability the inplicit finite difference scheme is employed.

  • Significant improvements in bond strength between new and existing concrete can be achieved through the modification of the new concrete by latex modification. But, no test method has been adopted as a standard to measure the bond strength between the concrete used to repair and the substrate being repaired. The performance of old and the new concrete construction defends upon band strength between old and the new concrete. Current adhesion strength measurement method is inaccurate method that ignore effect of stress concentration by shape of specimens. Therefore, this research calculates stress concentration coefficient using finite element analysis and direction tensile strength test (pull-off test). The result shows that the required core depth is 2.5 cm. Elastic modulus and overlay thickness do not influence in stress concentration.

  • The objective of research is to clarify the interaction between dislocations and precipitates during high temperature creep deformation behaviors of high n austenitic steels. After measuring the internal stress in minimum creep rate state under applied stress of 236MPa at 873K, a transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation was performed to investigate the interaction between dislocations and precipitates during high temperature creep deformation. The band widths and values of internal stress increased when the nitride precipitates distribute more densely. Fine nitrides disturbed the dislocation movement with pinning the dislocations and perfect dislocations were separated into Shockley partial dislocations by fine nitrides. Coarse nitrides disturbed the dislocation movement with climb mechanism.
