Anterior Dislodgement of a Fusion Cage after Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion for the Treatment of Isthmic Spondylolisthesis

  • Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) is commonly used procedure for spinal fusion. However, there are no reports describing anterior cage dislodgement after surgery. This report is a rare case of anterior dislodgement of fusion cage after TLIF for the treatment of isthmic spondylolisthesis with lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LSTV). A 51-year-old man underwent TLIF at L4-5 with posterior instrumentation for the treatment of grade 1 isthmic spondylolisthesis with LSTV. At 7 weeks postoperatively, imaging studies demonstrated that banana-shaped cage migrated anteriorly and anterolisthesis recurred at the index level with pseudoarthrosis. The cage was removed and exchanged by new cage through anterior approach, and screws were replaced with larger size ones and cement augmentation was added. At postoperative 2 days of revision surgery, computed tomography (CT) showed fracture on lateral pedicle and body wall of L5 vertebra. He underwent surgery again for paraspinal decompression at L4-5 and extension of instrumentation to S1 vertebra. His back and leg pains improved significantly after final revision surgery and symptom relief was maintained during follow-up period. At 6 months follow-up, CT images showed solid fusion at L4-5 level. Careful cage selection for TLIF must be done for treatment of spondylolisthesis accompanied with deformed LSTV, especially when reduction will be attempted. Banana-shaped cage should be positioned anteriorly, but anterior dislodgement of cage and reduction failure may occur in case of a highly unstable spine. Revision surgery for the treatment of an anteriorly dislodged cage may be effectively performed using an anterior approach.

거창지역 중.고등학생의 우유와 유제품에 대한 기호도 및 섭취실태 조사 (Preference and Consumption Pattern of Middle and High School Students on Milk and Milk Products, in Geochang Area)

  • This study was performed to investigate the preference and consumption pattern on milk and milk products of middle and high school students. The subjects were 1,195 students(590 middle school and 605 high school students) living in Geochang area. The survey was conducted by using a self-administered questionnaire in November, 2004. The results were as follows. Sixty-three point four percent of the subjects liked milk, and the main reason was 'accelerate growth and development'(55.4%). Preferred tastes of milk were 'savory taste'(35.4%) and 'sweet taste' (29.9%). Banana milk, chocolate milk, strawberry milk, ice cream, yoplait and yogurt were highly preferred. General preference for different kinds of milk was significantly higher in high school students and male students than in middle school students and female ones. With regard to preference for dairy products, cream (p<0.01) and butter(p<0.05) was preferred more by male students than by female ones, ice cream(p<0.05), yoplait (p<0.05) more by female students than male ones. The score of milk intake frequency was 3.84(3-4 times a week) out of 5 points(7 times a week) for white milk, and that of chocolate milk was 1.98, banana milk 1.96, strawberry milk 1.72, coffee milk 1.65, showing that these products were drank less then once a week. In addition, the white milk intake frequency was significantly higher in middle school students and male students than in high school students and female students(p<0.001). Preference for milk showed a positive correlation with preference for dairy products (r=0.543, P<0.001) and frequency of milk intake(r=0.429, P<0.001). This suggests that those who prefer milk high tend to prefer dairy products and to show high milk intake frequency. In addition, milk intake frequency was in a high positive correlation with dairy product intake frequency(r=0.648, P<0.001).

Fusarium속의 염색체 분석 (Chromosomal Studies on the Genus Fusarium)

  • Fusarium 속의 20균주를 PDA 배지에서 배양하고. HCI-Giemsa 염색법을 이용하여 균사 내에서의 영양핵의 핵분열을 관찰하였고, 염색체 수를 세었다. 관찰한 모든 Fusarium 속의 균주들익 염색체 수는 4-8개 사이에 있었다. 그 중에서 3균주인 F. solari S Hongchun D4. F. moniiforme(from banana), F. raphani (from radish)는 n=8개이고, F, solani 7468(from Sydney), F, solani 7475 (from Sydney), F, oxyporum (from tomato), F, oxyporum(from tomato). F F. roseum(from rice), F, sporotrichioides C. Jungsun 1, F. avenaceum C Kosung 6. F, avenaceum46039 등의 7균주에서는 n=7개였다 F. monilzfonne (from rice), F. graminellrum, F. probiferatum 6787(from Sydney), F. anguioides ATCC20351의 5균주는 n=6개 F. moniliforme NRRL2284. F. poae NRRL3287. F. tricintum NRRL 3299의 3균주는 n=5개였고 가장 적은 수의 n=4개인 균주로는 F. sporotrichioides NRRL3510과 F. equiscli KFCC 11843 IFO 030198의 3균주였다. 이상의 균주들의 염색체 수를 비교 고찰할 때 Fusarium 속의 기본 염색체 수는 반수체가 4개이며 종 분화과정에서 이수체와 배수체가 되었을 것으로 추론된다.

  • Bacillus circulans F-2 $\alpha$-amylase에 의한 각종 oligosaccharide의 분해산물을 조사하고, Bacillus circulans F-2 $\alpha$-amylase, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens $\alpha$-amylase, Rhizopus niveus glucoamylase에 의한 각종 생전분의 분해율을 비교 검토한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 공시 oligosaccharide중 Bacillus circuians F-2 $\alpha$-amylase는 maltose와 maltotriose를 분해시키지 못하였으나 meltotetraose이상의 oligosaccharide는 분해시켰다. maltotetraose, maltopentaose, maltoheraose, maltoheptaose, maltooctaose중 maltotetraose의 분해가 가장 미약하였다. 2. soluble starch, amylopectin, amylose, oyster glycogen중 oyster glycogen의 분해율이 약간 낮았다. 3. corn starch의 분해율은 진탕반응이 정치반응보다 높았으나 potato starch에 대하여는 효소의 종류에 따라 일정치 않았다. 4. corn, rice, arrowroot, high amylose corn, banana, sago, yam, potato starch에 대하여 Bacillus circulans F-2 $\alpha$-amylase가 Bacillus amyloquefaciems $\alpha$-amylase, Rhizopus niveus glucoamylase보다 월등하게 높은 분해율을 나타내었다.

배지내 천연유기물 첨가가 딸기 "설향" 배양묘 기내 생육에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Natural Additives on In Vitro Growth Medium of Strawberry 'Seolhyang')

  • Strawberry which is the genus Fragaria under family Rosaceae is one of the most important fruit plants for both fresh consumption and food processing in the temperate and subtropical countries. Propagation of strawberry is achieved either through runners or by in vitro micropropagation. Meristem tips, generally obtained from runners of virus-free plants, are commonly used to establish in vitro cultures, which are employed for mass propagation or as a source of plant material for regeneration and transformation experiments. This study was conducted to determine the optimal natural additives strength to improve sprouting shoot rate of apical meristem of strawberry 'Seolhyang'. Strawberry apical meristem at size (0.2 mm to 0.3 mm) with leaf primordials were cultured on the 1/3MS(Murashige & Skoog) medium supplemented with five natural additives such as coconut milk, maple sap, banana powder and peptone. The sprouting ratio and growth characteristics were evaluated after eight weeks after in vitro culture. Shoot ratio of 'Seolhyang' apical meristem was 72.9% in 1/3MS medium supplemented with maple sap. On the other hand, the low shoot ratio was observed 47.7% in 1/3MS medium supplemented with banana powder. Shoot length was different as natural additives but numbers of leaf was not significantiy different among the natural additives. As a result, the sprouting ratio and plant growth were enhanced effectively in 1/3MS medium with maple sap compared to the others.

Screening of immunoactive ingredients in frequently consumed food in Korea

  • The objectives of this study were to find out the plant to enhance immune activity among 42 kinds of foods frequently consumed by the Korean elderly consisting of 5 food groups and 5 wild plants. Each sample was assessed the immunoactive effect by measuring $NF-{\kappa}B/AP1$ gene expression, nitric oxide and cytokine production in $RAW-Blue^{TM}$ cell. Soybean sprouts of 47 plants showed the highest $NF-{\kappa}B/AP1$ gene expression at the level of $1.13{\pm}0.03$ (O.D. 650 nm) and Soritae, sweet potato, banana, apple, garlic, crown daisy, cabbage and Ailanthus altissima also had high activity of $NF-{\kappa}B/AP1$ gene in $RAW-Blue^{TM}$ cell stimulated by LPS. NO production of Ailanthus altissima was significantly higher than that of other plants and 16 plants of glutinous sorghum, black rice, Seoritae, Heuktae, sweet potato, banana, apple, garlic, mungbean sprouts, spinach, crown daisy, young pumpkin, cabbage, soybean sprouts, Actinidia arguta and Aster scaber were the next best activity. The above results selected 17 out of 47 plant samples. Moreover, soybean sprouts was significantly shown to increase $TNF-{\alpha}$ ($1,509.55{\pm}1.38pg/mL$) and $IL-1{\beta}$ ($54.56{\pm}1.08pg/mL$) cytokines in comparison with RAW-Blue cell stimulated by LPS. According to the results of in vitro evaluation, the ethanol extract of soybean sprout increased the production of immune-enhancing cytokines by proliferation of macrophages. In addition, $NF-{\kappa}B$ transcription factor activity and NO production ability were excellent, and it was selected as a material having excellent immunological activity.

Characterization of Alpha Amylase Producing Thielaviopsis ethacetica and Its Raw Starch Hydrolyzing Ability on Different Agricultural Substrates

  • The present study reports the morphological and molecular characterization of the fungal strain, CMSS06 and evaluates its raw starch hydrolyzing ability in four different agricultural substrates (rice bran, banana peel, cassava tubers, and coconut water). The potential use of each agricultural substrate to replace the expensive fermentation media was evaluated with six different fermentation media: rice bran (RB), banana peel (BP), cassava starch (CS), cassava in coconut water (CSCW), cassava in modified coconut water (CMCW), and pure Coconut water (CW). The fungal strain CMSS06 was identified as Thielaviopsis ethacetica by the analysis of the ITS sequences. The T. ethacetica alpha amylase enzyme exhibited maximum alpha amylase activity at 72 h, pH 7.0, and $40^{\circ}C$ on soluble starch. This species resulted in the highest enzyme activity (mU/ml) of 26.06, 10.89, 58.82, 14.2, and 54.67 with the RB, BP, CS, CSCW, and CMCW fermentation media, respectively. The results indicate that CS can be used as a carbon substrate and CMCW can be used to accelerate the fermentation by T. ethacetica. The enzyme was partially purified by 40-60% ammonium sulphate fraction, and it showed total enzyme activity, total protein content, specific activity, purification fold, and a recovery of 2400 mU, 30 mg, 80 mU/mg, 2.7, and 71.1%, respectively. The molecular mass of the T. ethacetica alpha amylase was estimated on SDS-PAGE, and two bands around 50 kDa and 70 kDa were identified. The present study implies that T. ethacetica can produce alpha amylase, and it can be used to hydrolyze raw starch during the fermentation processes.

한국 성인에서 과일 종류별 섭취 및 대사적 지표와의 관련성 - 2016 국민건강영양조사 자료를 활용하여 - (Fruit Consumption by Fruit Type and Its Relation to Metabolic Factors in Korean Adults - 2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey -)

  • This study used a food-frequency questionnaire to estimate fruit consumption by sex, age, and type of fruit to analyze the association between fruit type and metabolic factors. Using food-frequency-questionnaire data from 3,091 adults aged 19~64 years (1,184 men and 1,907 women) in the 2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, this study analyzed weekly fruit consumption and the consumption frequency of strawberry, oriental melon, watermelon, peach, grape, apple, pear, persimmon/dried persimmon, tangerine, banana, orange, and kiwi by sex and age groups. Apple was the most-consumed fruit (459.45 g/wk), followed by pear (165.80 g/wk), watermelon (124.80 g/wk), and banana (115.32 g/wk). After adjustment for confounding factors, ED: Please give examples. in the women who ate more than the median consumption of apple, the prevalence of hyperglycemia was 27.4% (OR: 0.726, 95% CI: 0.539~0.979) (p=0.0362), and of high triglycerides, 25.7% (OR: 0.743, 95% CI: 0.564~0.978) (p=0.0340). These rates were lower than those of women who ate less than the median consumption of apple. The results of this study suggest that apple consumption helps improve metabolic indicators in Korean adults.

Whole Genome Sequencing of Two Musa Species Towards Disease Resistance and Fiber Quality Improvement

  • Abaca (Musa textilis L. Nee) is a native Musa species from the Philippines known for its natural fiber. Abaca fiber a.k.a. Manila hemp extracted from its pseudostems is considered one of the strongest fibers in the world. This is used for commodities such as ropes, papers, and money bills. Abaca is vulnerable to pests and diseases such as the Abaca Bunchy Top Disease (ABTD) caused by Abaca Bunchy Top Virus (ABTV) and Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV). Inosa, one of the varieties of abaca utilized in the Philippines, is highly susceptible to ABTD. In contrast, Pacol (Musa balbisiana L.), a close relative of abaca, is highly resistant to the same disease. Here, we report the sequencing and de novo genome assembly of both abaca var. Inosa and banana var. Pacol. A total of ~16 Gb and ~21 Gb raw reads for Inosa and Pacol, respectively, were generated using Pacbio Hifi sequencing method and assembled with Hifiasm. High-quality de novo assemblies of both Musa species with 99% recovered as per BUSCO analysis were obtained. The assembled Inosa genome has a total length of ~654 Mb and N50 of 7 Mb while Pacol has a total length of 527 Mb and N50 of 3 Mb which are close to their estimated genome size of ~638 Mb and ~503 Mb, respectively. The information that can be derived from the de novo assembled genomes would provide a solid foundation for further research in disease resistance and fiber quality improvement in abaca.

유통 중인 과일류의 중금속 모니터링 (Monitoring of Heavy Metals in Fruits in Korea)

  • 국내에는 과일류 중 중금속의 기준규격은 없으나, Codex에서는 과일류 중 납 함량 규격을 0.1 mg/kg으로 설정하여 관리하고 있다. 이에 따라 우리나라에서 유통 중인 과일류의 중금속 함량 규격을 설정하고자 일일 섭취량이 많은 과일 8종(오렌지, 사과, 바나나, 배, 감귤, 감, 망고, 키위), 927건을 수거하여 납, 카드뮴, 비소 및 수은 함량을 수은분석기 및 ICP-MS를 이용하여 분석하였다. 표준용액첨가법에 의한 회수율은 납 86.0-110.4%, 카드뮴 81.0-104.0%, 비소 82.0-104.7%를 얻었으며, 수은분석기를 이용한 수은의 회수율은 106.5%이었다. 조사결과 국내유통 중인 과일류의 중금속 평균함량은 납 8.3, 카드뮴 0.7 비소 1.4, 수은 $0.3{\mu}g/kg$으로 조사되었다. 중금속의 주간섭취량을 FAO/WHO에서 안전성 평가를 위해 설정한 PTWI와 비교한 결과, 납, 카드뮴, 수은이 각각 0.17, 0.013 및 0.006%로 그 수준이 매우 낮아 우리나라에서 유통되는 이들 과일로부터 섭취하는 중금은 매우 미미하여 안전한 수준으로 판단된다.
