A Study of the Technical Treatment within an Environmental Appetency for the Ballast Water

  • In accordance with adoption of new convention for the control of ship's ballast water at the diplomatic conference held in London Feb, 2004, every country has to regulate the ballast water and deposit matters. When this Resolution comes into effect in 2009, all vessels engaged in international voyage must have ballast water control program, ballast water records, equipments which are suitable to the standard of exchange and performance for the ballast water. This study estimates objectively their performances, merits and demerits of the ballast water treatment technique and exchanging techniques for safe operation of ships. It is desirable to design an equipment to control the ballast water using the brush-type vacuum suction nonstop reverse cleaning system to overcome the clogging phenomenon and the direct disc filtering to maximize filtering area for the optimum process considering biological availabilities. It will be expected to protect against marine pollution and to maintain clean sea if it is secured to develop new ballast water treatment techniques. And it will also be expected to cope with the Resolution and each regulation of the developed countries from the ballast water.

Risk Assessment for Retrofitting an Electrolysis Type Ballast Water Treatment System on an Exiting Vessel (현존선에 전기분해방식 선박평형수 처리장치 설치를 위한 위험도 평가 분석)

  • Over the past several years, sea trade have increased traffic by ships which highlighted a problem of unwanted species invading the surrounding seas through ship's ballast water discharge. Maritime trade volume has continuously increased worldwide and the problem still exists. The respective countries are spending billions of dollars in an effort to clean up the contamination and prevent pollution. As part of an effort to solve marine environmental problem, BWM(Ballast Water Management) convention was adopted at a diplomatic conference on Feb. 13 2004. In order to comply harmoniously this convention by each country. This convention will be effective after 12 months from the date which 30 countries ratified accounting for more than 35% of the world merchant shipping volume. On Sep. 8 2016, Finland ratified this convention and effective condition was satisfied as 52 states and world merchant vessel fleet 35.1441%. Thus, after Sep. 8 2017, all existing vessels shall be equipped with BWTS(Ballast Water Treatment System) in accordance with D-2 Regulation, which physically handles ballast water from ballast water exchange system(D-1 Regulation). In this study, we analyzed in detail the optimal design method using the Risk Analysis and Evaluation technique which is mainly used in the manufacturing factory or the risky work site comparing with the traditional design concept method applying various criteria. The Risk Assessment Method is a series of processes for finding the Risk Factors in the design process, analyzing a probility of the accident and size of the accident and then quantifying the Risk Incidence and finally taking measures. In this study, this method was carried out for Electrolysis treatment type on DWT 180K Bulk Carrier using "HAZOP Study" method among various methods. In the Electrolysis type, 63 hazardous elements were identified.

Output Voltage Control Technique Using Current Forward Compensation for Phase Shifted Full Bridge Converter Without Output Capacitor (출력 커패시터가 없는 위상천이 풀브릿지 컨버터의 전류 전향 보상을 이용한 출력 전압 제어 기법)

  • At present, the low-voltage, high-current type power supply is mainly used for effective sterilization in the ballast water treatment system. Research on PSFB converters without output capacitors has been ongoing. Such converters effectively treat ballast water without a separate disinfectant through electric pulses by applying a pulse-type power to the output electrode without an output capacitor. However, in the case of the pulse-type electrolysis treatment method, voltage overshoot can occur due to abrupt voltage fluctuations when the load changes, resulting in circuit reliability problems because of the output capacitorless system. Therefore, a new voltage control algorithm is required. In this paper, we will discuss voltage control for pulsed electrolysis topology without an output capacitor. The proposed voltage control method has been verified using Simulation and experiment. The usefulness of the proposed control method has been proven by the experimental results.

Optimization of ejector for swirl flow using CFD (CFD를 이용한 회전 운동을 하는 이젝터의 최적화)

  • This paper investigates the effect of the rotational motion of a driving fluid generated by a rotational motion device at the inlet of a driving nozzle for a gas-liquid ejector, which is the main device used for ozonated ship ballast water treatment. An experimental apparatus was constructed to study the pressure and suction flow rate of each port of the ejector according to the back pressure. Experimental data were acquired for the ejector without rotational motion. Based on the data, a finite element model was then developed. The rotational motion of the driving fluid could improve the suction efficiency of the ejector based on the CFD model. Based on the CFD results, structure optimization was performed for the internal shape of the rotation induction device to increase the suction flow rate of the ejector, which was performed using the kriging technique and a metamodel. The optimized rotation induction device improved the ejector efficiency by about 3% compared to an ejector without rotational motion of the driving fluid.
