In this paper, a wall climbing robot, called LAVAR, is developed, which is using an impeller for adhering. The adhesion mechanism of the robot consists of an impeller and two-layered suction seals which provide sufficient adhesion force for the robot body on the non smooth vertical wall and horizontal ceiling. The robot uses two driving-wheels and one ball-caster to maneuver the wall surface. A suspension mechanism is also used to overcome the obstacles on the wall surface. For its design, the whole adhering mechanism is analyzed and the control system is built up based on this analysis. The performances of the robot are experimentally verified on the vertical and horizontal flat surfaces.
In this paper, we propose a cable climbing robot which can climb up and down the cables in the bridges. The robot mechanism consists of three parts: a wheel based driving mechanism, adhesion mechanism, and safe landing mechanism. The wheel based driving mechanism is driven by tooth clutches and motors. The adhesion mechanism plays the role of maintaining adhesion force by a combination of pantograph, ball screw, and springs even when the power is lost. The safe landing mechanism is developed for guaranteeing the safety of the robot during operations on cables. It can make the robot fall down with reduced speed by dissipating the gravitational forces. The robot mechanism is designed and manufactured for validating its effectiveness.
This paper presents the design procedure for soccer-playing rovots based on the centralized approach. Using a fast vision system, we obtain the configuration of each robot and then the host computer computes the desired motion and commands each robot directly via RF communication. The robot soccer game has a lot of problems such as obstacle avoidance, coordination between robots, dribbling the ball, and so on. To implement such motions, we think that the centralized approach seems to be more powerful than the distributed approach. We describe the technical tips for developing the robots in detail here and explain our strategy for getting the scores.
Conventional robot manipulators actuated by motors with the speed reducer such as the harmonic drive have weakness in the load capacity, since the speed reducer does not have enough strength. To improve this, a new type of robot actuator based on the four-bar-link mechanism driven by the ball screw was constructed. Also, a new type of revolute robot manipulator composed of the developed actuators was developed. But, modelling errors occur due to the off-set from the nominal model since the exact modeling of the complex inertia variation of the four-bar-link actuator is very difficult. To control the proposed robot along the prescribed trajectory, a sliding mode control algorithm was applied with compensation function for the modeling errors. To show performance of the proposed controller, a computer simulation was performed, and its results was presented.
Robots in various types carry and assemble parts through repeatedly and accurately moving to stored locations by combining linear motions. And, linear systems are used in orthogonal axes of robots and driven via ball screws, such as 2-axis cartesian coordinate robot in this paper. This paper presents the effect of the linear motion guide that is used in $2^{nd}$ axis in 2-axis cartesian coordinate robot. Some simulation results show that the linear motion guide influence greatly in robot performance such as the nominal life of linear guide. When use LM guide that have capacity near in $2^{nd}$ axis, this paper show that the nominal life on LM block of $1^{st}$ axis increases 37.4% and that the specification of $2^{nd}$ axis LM guide influences greatly the nominal life of $1^{st}$ axis LM block.
Robot's throwing control is difficult to accurately calculate because of air resistance and rotational inertia, etc. This complexity can be solved by using machine learning. Reinforcement learning using reward function puts limit on adapting to new environment for robots. Therefore, this paper applied deep reinforcement learning using neural network without reward function. Throwing is evaluated as a success or failure. AI network learns by taking the target position and control policy as input and yielding the evaluation as output. Then, the task is carried out by predicting the success probability according to the target location and control policy and searching the policy with the highest probability. Repeating this task can result in performance improvements as data accumulates. And this model can even predict tasks that were not previously attempted which means it is an universally applicable learning model for any new environment. According to the data results from 520 experiments, this learning model guarantees 75% success rate.

In this paper, a six degree-of-freedom robot arm which is very light but capable of delivering heavy loads was studied. The proposed robot arm has much higher load capacity than conventional robot arms actuated by motors with speed reducers such as the harmonic drive since a new type of robot actuator based on a closed chain mechanism driven by the ball screw was adopted. Analysis on the design scheme and on the mechanism of the joint actuator of the robot arm were made. Since the robot arm was designed very light, it has deflection in the links. To analyze this, a finite element analysis on the structure of the designed robot links was made using ANSYS software. Verifying experiments on the performance of high load capacity of the robot arm was performed by loading heavy weights on the robot arm. Through experiments. the correctness of the numerical analysis was also verified.
Less than 1 % directional error in the range of 5 meters in the green could cause a stroke or more. Although there are several reasons offsetting the direction of the golf ball, lie angle and sidespin effect are the most crucial factors of the putting game. Simple equation is conformed to the experimental results of the deviation of the directional error in all distance. Also, the experimental results of the putting robot show that there are significant side spin effects.
This paper presents a new hybrid serial-parallel robot(HSPR), which has six degrees of freedom driven by ball screw linear actuators and motored joints. This hybrid robot design presents a compromise between high rigidity of fully parallel manipulators and extended workspace of serial manipulators. The hybrid robot has a large, singularity-free workspace and high stiffness. Therefore, the presented kinematic structure of the hybrid robot is particularly suitable for multi-tasking machining processes such as milling, drilling, deburring and grinding. In addition to the machining processes, the hybrid robot can be used for welding, fixturing, material handling and so on. The study on design of the hybrid robot is performed. A kinematic analysis and mechanism description of the hybrid robot with six-controlled degree of freedom is presented. In the virtual design works by DADS, workspace and force analysis are discussed. A numerical model is treated to demonstrate our analysis and to determine the range of permissible extension of the struts. Also, we determine some important design parameters for the hybrid robot.
Recently, ball screws have been used in machine tools, robot parts, and medical instruments. The demand for ball screws of high precision and reduced size is increasing because of the growth of high value-added industries. Three types of ball screws are typically used: deflector type, end-cap type, and tube type. They are also classified from C0 to C9 according to the precision level. A deflector type ball screw can reduce the variation of rotational torque and the size of the nut of the ball screw is minimized. To ensure the reliable design of ball screws, it is important to perform a structural analysis. The purpose of this study is to perform a stability evaluation through analysis of a deflector type miniature ball screw for weapon systems. The analysis is performed through Finite Elements Method (FEM) simulation to predict characteristics such as deformation, stress, and thermal effects. The interference between the shaft and the deflector for smooth rotation are also studied. Based on the results of the analysis, the development of the deflector type miniature ball screw for weapon systems is performed.
