The effects of nozzle-lip thickness on the relationship between screech tone and broadband shock-associated noise were experimentally investigated using a convergent-divergent nozzle with a design Mach number of 2.0. Overall sound pressure levels (OASPL) and noise spectra were obtained at far-field locations. Schlieren optical system was used to visualize the flow-fields of supersonic jets. A baffle plate was installed at the exit of the nozzle and its size was varied to obtain different nozzle-lip thicknesses. Experiment was carried out over a wide range of nozzle pressure ratios from 2.0 and 18.0, which corresponds to over- and under-expanded conditions. The results obtained clearly show that the screech tones are influenced by the nozzle-lip thickness. It is found that the screech tone and its peak amplitude are strongly dependent on whether the jet is over-expanded and under-expanded at the nozzle exit.

Generally, a ${\pi}$-type girder composed of two I-type girders is known to have a significant disadvantage in wind resistance design because of aerodynamic instability. A representative bridge for this girder was Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Since Tacoma Narrows Bridge had very low stiffness of the bridge structure and its cross-section shape had aerodynamic instability, the bridge collapsed after severe torsion and vibration events in 19m/s wind speed. Aerodynamic vibration can be avoided by enhancing structural stiffness and damping factor and conducting a study of cross-section shapes. This study shows the angle of attack for the four-span cable stayed bridge having ${\pi}$-type cross-section and describes the aerodynamic characteristics of the changed cross-section with aerodynamic vibration damping additions, by carrying out two-dimension vibration tests. As a result of uniform flow and turbulent flow, the study shows that because the basic ${\pi}$-type cross-section alone can have efficient wind resistant stability, there is no need to have additional aerodynamic damping equipment. Since this four 230m-main-span bridge has a large frequency and also has a big stiffness compared to other bridges containing a similar cross-section, it has aerodynamic stability under the design wind speed.

Showerhead is used as a main part in the semiconductor equipment. The face plate flatness should remain constant and the cleaning performance must be gained to keep the uniformity level of etching or deposition in chemical vapor deposition process. High operating temperature or long period of thermal loading could lead the showerhead to be deformed thermally. In some case, the thermal deformation appears very sensitive to showerhead performance. This paper describes the methods for robust design using computational fluid dynamics. To reveal the influence of the post distribution on flow pattern in the showerhead cavity, numerical simulation was performed for several post distributions. The flow structure appears similar to an impinging flow near a centered baffle in showerhead cavity. We took the structure as an index to estimate diffusion path. A robust design to reduce the thermal deformation of showerhead can be achieved using post number increase without ill effect on flow. To prevent the showerhead deformation by heat loading, its face plate thickness was determined additionally using numerical simulation. The face plate has thousands of impinging holes. The design key is to keep pressure drop distribution on the showerhead face plate with the holes. This study reads the methodology to apply to a showerhead hole design. A Hagen-Poiseuille equation gives the pressure drop in a fluid flowing through such hole. The assumptions of the equation are the fluid is viscous-incompressible and the flow is laminar fully developed in a through hole. An equation can be expressed with radius R and length L related to the volume flow rate Q from the Hagen-Poiseuille equation, $Q={\pi}R4{\Delta}p/8{\mu}L$, where ${\mu}$ is the viscosity and ${\Delta}p$ is the pressure drop. In present case, each hole has steps at both the inlet and the outlet, and the fluid appears compressible. So we simplify the equation as $Q=C(R,L){\Delta}p$. A series of performance curves for a through hole with geometric parameters were obtained using two-dimensional numerical simulation. We obtained a relation between the hole diameter and hole length from the test cases to determine hole diameter at fixed hole length. A numerical simulation has been performed as a tool for enhancing showerhead robust design from flow structure. Geometric parameters for the design were post distribution and face plate thickness. The reinforced showerhead has been installed and its effective deposition profile is being shown in factory.
It is well known that screech tones of supersonic jet are generated by a feedback loop driven by the instability waves. Near the nozzle lip where the supersonic jet mixing layer is receptive to external excitation, acoustic disturbances impinging on this area excite the instability waves. This fact implies that the nozzle lip thickness can influence the screech tones of supersonic jet. The objective of the present study is to experimentally investigate the effect of nozzle-lip thickness on screech tones of supersonic jets issuing from a convergent-divergent nozzle. A baffle plate was installed at the nozzle exit to change the nozzle-lip thickness. Detailed acoustic measurement and flow visualization were made to specify the screech tones. The results obtained obviously show that nozzle-lip thickness significantly affects the screech tones of supersonic jet, strongly depending on whether the jet at the nozzle exit is over-expanded or under-expanded.
The flow pattern inside the inlet chamber of the tube side is one of the key parameters influencing on the performances of the shell-and-tube type of heat exchangers(STHE). In order to improve the flow distribution, the baffle shaped as the porous plate is installed in the inlet chambers. In the present study, numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the flow features of the tube side of the STHE in sense of the hydraulic performances. The flow fields have been analysed by the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solvers with the proper turbulent models. Computational domain is ranged in the whole of the tube side of the STHE. The numerical results showed that the presence of the baffles improves the redistribution of the flow injecting to the tube bundels. The good agreements of the numerical results with the experimental results of PIV measurements have been shown for the validation of the numerical methods adopted in the present papers.
In the previous study, it is proved by numerical simulation that the baffle shaped as the porous plate installed in the inlet chambers improves the redistribution of the flow injecting to the tube bundles. In the present study, numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the effects of the flow distributors on the thermal characteristics of the shell and tube heat exchangers. The flow fields have been analysed by the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solvers including the thermal conditions on the shell sides. The numerical results showed that the presence of the baffles improves the redistribution of the heat transfer to the tube bundles though the overall performance drop slightly on the present flow conditions.

Experimental and numerical analysis on the heat transfer behaviors and the associated frictional loss in a rectangular channel with two inclined perforated baffles($\;5^{\circ}$) mounted on the bottom plate has been systematically performed. The parametric effects of perforated baffles (3, 6, 9 holes) and flow Reynolds number on heat transfer characteristics of the heated target surface are explored. A combination of two baffles of same overall size was considered and the flow Reynolds number for this study is varied between 28,900 and 61,800. Comparisons of the experimental data with the numerical results by commercial code CFX 5.7 are made. As for the investigation of heat transfer behaviors on local Nusselt number with the two baffles installed at $x/D_h=0.8\;and\;x/D_h=8.0$, it is evident that there exist an optimum perforation density to maximize heat transfer coefficients; i.e., the maximum Nusselt number decreases with increasing number of holes.

The present study addresses the distortion of the compression wave reflected from an open end of a shock tube. An experiment is carried out using the simple shock tube with an open end Computational work is also performed to represent the experimented flows. The second-order Total Variation Diminishing scheme is employed to numerically solve the unsteady, axisy-mmetric, inviscid, compressible governing equations. Both the experimented and predicted results are in good agreement. The generation and development mechanisms of the compression wave, which Is reflected from the open end of the shock tube, are obtained in detail from the present computations. The effect of size of the baffle plate at the open-end that causes the reflection of the incident expansion wave is found negligible. A good correlation is obtained for transition of the reflected compression wave to a shock wave inside the tube. The present data show that for a given wave length of the incident expansion wave the transition of the reflected compression wave to a shock wave can be predicted with good accuracy.
This paper represents the turbulent intensity, the turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress in the X-Y plane of cone type swirl gas burner measured by using X-probe from the hot-wire anemometer system. The experiment is carried out at flowrate 350 and $450{\ell}/min$ respectively in the test section of subsonic wind tunnel. The turbulent intensity and the turbulent kinetic energy show that the maximum value is formed in the narrow slits distributed radially on the edge of a cone type swirl burner, hence, the combustion reaction is anticipated to occur actively near this region. And the turbulent intensities ${\upsilon}\;and\;{\omega}$ are disappeared faster than the turbulent intensity u due to the inclined flow velocity ejecting from the swirl vanes of a cone type baffle plate of burner. Moreover, the Reynolds shear stress $u{\upsilon}$ is distributed about three times as large as the Reynolds shear stress $u{\omega}$ in the outer region of the cone type gas burner.
The numerical analysis by using CFX 11.0 commercial code was done for prediction of fluid flow and thermal field in the vertical heat exchanger. The present experimental studies were also conducted to investigate the effects of circulating solid particles on the fluid flow and temperatures in the fluidized bed vertical shell and tube type heat exchanger with counterflow, at which the solid particles of glasses (3 $mm{\Phi}$) were used in the fluidized bed with a smooth tube. The effect of circulation on the distance(L) of tube inlet and baffle plate was also examined. The present experimental and numerical results showed that the particles in the distance (Ds) of 15 mm showed a more efficient circulation without stacked the space and the LMTD(Log Mean Temperature Difference) in the fluidized bed type was much lower than that in the typical type shell and tube heat exchanger.
