In order to ensure the structural dynamic stability of moving liquid-storage containers, the flow motion of interior liquid should be appropriately suppressed by means of mechanical devices such as the disc-type elastic baffle. In practice, the design of a suitable baffle requires a priori the parametric dynamic characteristics of storage containers, with respect to the design parameters of baffle, such as the installation location and inner-hole size, the baffle number, and so on. In this paper, we intend to investigate the parametric effect of the baffle parameters on the transient dynamic behavior of a cylindrical fuel-storage tank in an abrupt vertical acceleration motion. For this goal, we employ the ALE (arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) kinematic description method incorporated with the finite element method.

Acoustic behavior in baffled combustion chambers is numerically investigated by adopting linear acoustic analysis. Partial blade baffle, which is a variant of blade baffle, and hub-blade baffle with six blades are employed as baffle models. Through modal analysis, natural frequencies of each acoustic mode in baffled chambers are calculated and the reduction in natural frequencies caused by baffle installation is examined. Through harmonic analysis, acoustic pressure responses of each chamber to acoustic oscillating excitation are shown. The first tangential mode is found to be most sensitive to acoustic oscillation. Acoustic damping effect of baffle is quantified by damping factor. Damping effect of hub-blade baffle is the most appreciable and damping factor of partial blade baffle is much lower than that of blade baffle. Damping effect of six-blade baflle on the second tangential mode is as much as on the first tangential mode and hub-blade baffle can damp out appreciably the first tangential as well as the first radial mode with the aid of hub.

To perform combined tests with propellant feeding system and engine, which were developed for KSR-III launcher, vertical test stand was organized and a series of hot-fire combustion tests were carried out with engines of several injector faceplate types. In hot-fire tests in vertical installation, combustion instabilities occurred right after ignition with an engine without baffle, and such combustion instabilities did not occur at ignition add during mainstage operation for an engine with STS or composite baffle. 1.regular and temporary pressure pulsations(popping) were detected during steady operation with a baffle engine, however a development to combustion instabilities with resonant mode was highly suppressed by baffle. With a series of tests, it was confirmed that the last developed engine, which has composite baffle, was operated successfully in KSR-III flight propulsion system.

Liquid fluctuation called sloshing within liquid-storage tank gives rise to the significant effect on the dynamic stability of tank. This liquid sloshing can be effectively suppressed by installing baffles within the tank, and the suppression effect depends strongly on the design parameters of baffle like the baffle configuration. The present study is concerned with the parametric evaluation of the sloshing suppression effect for the CNG-storage tank, a next generation liquefied fuel for vehicles, to the major design parameters of baffle, such as the baffle configuration, the installation angle and height, the hole size of baffle. The coupled FEM-FVM analysis was employed to effectively reflect the interaction between the interior liquid flow and the tank elastic deformation.

In this paper, we intend to introduce a nonlinear finite element method based on the fully nonlinear potential flow theory in order to simulate the large amplitude sloshing flow in two-dimensional baffled tank subject to horizontally forced excitation. The free surface is tracked by a direct time differentiation scheme with the four-step predictor-corrector time integration method. The flow velocity is accurately recovered from the velocity potential by second-order least square method. In order to maintain the finite element mesh regularity and total mass, the semi-Lagrangian surface tracking method with area conservation is applied. According to the numerical formulae, we perform the parametric experiments by varying the installation height and the opening width of baffles, in order to examine the effects of baffle on the nonlinear liquid sloshing. From the numerical results, the hydrodynamic characteristics of the large amplitude sloshing are investigated.

Application of combustion stabilization devices such as baffle and acoustic cavity to liquid propellant rocket engine is investigated to suppress high-frequency combustion instability, i.e., acoustic instability. First, these damping devices are designed based on linear damping theory. As a principal design parameter, damping factor is considered and calculated numerically in the chambers with various specifications of these devices. Next, the unbaffled chambers with/without acoustic cavities are tested experimentally for several operating conditions. The unbaffled chamber shows the specific stability characteristics depending on the operating condition and has small dynamic stability margin. The most hazardous frequency is clearly identified through Fast Fourier Transform. As a result, the acoustic cavity with the present design has little stabilization effect in this specific chamber. Finally, stability rating tests are conducted with the baffled chamber, where evident combustion stabilization is observed, which indicates sufficient damping effect. Thrust loss caused by baffle installation is about $2{\%}$.
A numerical study has been peformed to investigate the flow and mixing characteristics of a chemical injection tank in the chemical and volume control system (CVCS) of Yonggwang 5&6 (YGN 5&6). This study was undertaken to provide a basis for modification of the previous design (YGN 3&4) which gave a lot of difficulties in installation and operation of the chemical injection system during the start-up test because it needs a special reciprocating pump with a high actual head. For the tank of length-to-diameter ratios (L/D) of 1,2 and 3, each with and without a baffle inside, calculation results were obtained by solving the unsteady laminar two-dimensional elliptic forms of governing equations for the mass, momentum and species concentration. Finite-difference method was used to obtain discretized equations, and the SIMPLER solution algorithm, which was developed based on the staggered grid control volume, was employed for the calculation procedure. Results showed that the baffle is very effective in enhancing the mixing in the tank and that a baffle should be installed near the tank entrance in order to 110 chemicals into the reactor coolant system (RCS) within the operating time required.
In this study, the internal flow field of SCR Denitrification Plant was simulated by using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD). In order to analyze the uniformity of flow field, an interpretation on the pre-existing facilities was performed, and some moot points were identified and compensated through this analysis. The compensatory methods include the installation of the Porous Plate below the bottom of the Baffle to create uniform flow and also, and the Guide Vane was also placed in the bend of pipe to guide the flow uniformly. Lastly, the Baffle was installed to deduct equalized space distribution of the air flow, initially flowed into the SCR Plant.

Storage tank filled with fluid has unique dynamic characteristics compared to general structures, due to the interaction between fluid and structure. The oscillation of the fluid surface caused by external forces is called sloshing, which occurs in moving vehicles with contained liquid masses, such as trucks, railroad cars, aircrafts, and liquid missles. In this study, the evaluation method for the reduction of sloshing, the optimized size and location of wing and diaphragm baffles are suggested based on the experimental results. The experimental device can simulate the translation motion. A rectangular tank and various baffles are fabricated to study on the sloshing characteristics. The forces measured using the load cell at tank wall and those are compared with each other through the Fourier transformation for various conditions. The study of the sloshing of the rectangular tank equipped with baffles is conducted under the same conditions with non-baffled rectangular tank experiment. From the experimental results, the sloshing reduction effect by the baffles is observed. In conclusion in case of diaphragm baffles, the optimized size ratio of the width of baffle to the water height is 0.44 and the installation location has no effect to the damping of sloshing. In case of wing baffles, the optimized size ratio of the width of baffle to the length of a rectangular tank is 0.1 and the optimized location ratio of the baffle to the water height is 0.9.
Constructed wetlands are widely applied in urban and rural areas for various purposes such as pollutants reduction, acquisition of eco-spaces and habitats, flooding reduction, acquisition of water resources and environmental education. Since the design of constructed wetlands utilizes ecosystems, special consideration must be given to ecological mechanisms, environmental mechanisms and hydrological mechanisms. To ensure the sustainable functionality of constructed wetlands, it is necessary to achieve stable flow rate and velocity, and remove sediments to ensure sufficient space for detention. To enhance the efficiency of constructed wetland sedimentation basins, this study determined the optimal position for baffle installation, and applied Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to the cross-sectional design of wetlands. CFD analysis revealed that the decrease in flow velocity with baffle installation enhanced the efficiency of sedimentation of particulate matters. Vertical baffles had higher sedimentation efficiency than those with an inclined angle. When vertical baffles were installed in the sedimentation basin of a hybrid constructed wetland to reduce non-point source pollutants in urban areas, the average flow velocity within the basin decreased by 10~30%, while the sedimentation efficiency improved by 1.3~1.5 times. The application of CFD to constructed wetlands is expected to improve the cost efficiency of designing hybrid constructed wetlands with high removal efficiency.
