  • Two types of poly(n-butyl acrylate) copolymer/silicate nanocomposites have been produced: poly(n-butyl acrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) [P(BA-co-MMA)]/silicate nanocomposites and poly(n-butyl acrylate-co-styrene) [P(BA-co-ST)]/silicate nanocomposites. The P(BA-co-MMA)/silicate nanocomposites shows the exfoliated structures but a P(BA-co-ST)/silicate nanocomposites have intercalated structures, because the BA/MMA comonomer has a higher polarity (e-value in Q-e scheme) than the BA/ST comonomer. The BA/MMA comonomer expanded the interlayer space of the silicate wider than did the BA/ST comonomer. The thermal degradation onset point of the P(BA-co-MMA)/silicate nanocomposites was 43$^{\circ}C$ higher than that of pure P(BA-co-MMA). P(BA-co-MMA)T5%, P(BA-co-MMA)T10%, and P(BA-co-MMA)T20% exhibit 134,302, and 195% increases, respectively, in their storage moduli at -20$^{\circ}C$ relative to the pure copolymer.

  • This study investigated the feasibility of a statistical approach for soil recycling through the prediction of BaP, DahA and total PAH (${\Sigma}PAH$) concentrations from BaA concentration. As results of regression, excellent linear correlations ($R^2$ > 0.90) were observed between BaA and BaP (or DahA) concentrations. When a developed prediction equation was applied to other investigations as a validation study, good prediction results were obtained. The predictive model showed very good correlation between the measured and calculated BaP. From this equation, BaA was an apparently important hydrocarbon for the prediction of PAHs. This model might provide a potentially useful tool for the calculation of average BaP, DahA and ${\Sigma}PAH$ without additional tests.

  • Effects of cimetidine, a cytochrome P450 inhibitor, on the benzo[a]pyrene (BaP)-mediated cytochrome P450 induction and lipid peroxidation of liver in olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, were investigated. Fish were fed either a cimetidine-supplemented diet or a cimetidine-free control diet once daily to satiation for 3 days. After 6 hrs of last feeding, the fish received intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of BaP (20 mg/kg of body weight) dissolved in sterile corn oil $(100 \mu L)$ or received only a corn oil i.p. injection. At 1, 2, 3, and 7 days after the injection, hepatic cytochrome P450 and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), an indicator of lipid peroxidation, were analyzed. BaP injection resulted in an increase of hepatic cytochrome P450, and the fish fed the cimetidine-supplemented diet before injection of BaP showed delayed increase of hepatic cytochrome P450 compared to the fish fed a cimetidine-free diet and BaP injected. Injection of BaP clearly induced hepatic lipid peroxidation, and consistently higher TBAR values were shown in the fish fed a cimetidinesupplemented diet before injection of BaP than the fish injected with BaP alone.

  • The effect of Ba2+ ion dissolution with different pH and amount of PAA on microstructural changes of green and sintered bodies and its electrical properties was studied in aqueous nano-size BaTiO3 slurry system. The dissolution of Ba2+ was least at strong base, pH 10.8 and by addition of amount of 0.15 wt% PAA. The green body with the lowest of dissolution of Ba2+ at pH 10.8 and 0.15 wt% PAA had minimum values of average pore size, 40nm and shown high increase of sintered density. The compact sintered at 125$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr with highest Ba2+ dissolution had low density and dielectric constant due to abnormal grian growth. However, the sintered body with the lowest Ba2+ dissolution had high sintered density and then shown high dielectric constant.

  • To realize the self-driving technology, there have been various system designs based on the related V2X standards, especially the IEEE 802.11p and WAVE standard supporting the WLAN V2X communication. On the other hand, the new standard IEEE 802.11ba defining supplementary wake-up radio operation is now under standardization targeting the low power operation, and it includes the V2P operation in use cases. However, if IEEE 802.11ba is used with the IEEE 802.11ba for V2X operation, the additional transmission procedure of wake-up frame in IEEE 802.11ba may cause the congestion problem and fails to meet the delay requirement. In this paper, the system structure of the combination of IEEE 802.11ba with the 802.11p is studied. In addition, based on the analysis and simulation, the considerations and improvements for effective low-power V2P communication in future self-driving technology using IEEE 802.11ba are proposed.

  • The present study revealed that Lrp, a leucine-responsive regulatory protein, is involved in the regulation of cadBA transcription through activation of $P_{cadBA}$. The influence of Lrp on $P_{cadBA}$ was mediated by CadC, and thereby, CadC was able to compensate for the lack of Lrp in the activation of $P_{cadBA}$. Western blot analyses and EMSA demonstrated that the cellular level of CadC was not significantly affected by Lrp, and that Lrp exerted its effect by directly binding to $P_{cadBA}$. These combined results suggested that CadC and Lrp function cooperatively to activate the $P_{cadBA}$ rather than sequentially in a regulatory cascade.

  • The biological effects of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (cPAHs) including benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), dibenzo[a,h]anthracene (DBA), benzo[a]anthracene (BaA), benzo[b] fluoranthene (BbF), benzo[k]fluoranthene (BkF), and indeno[1,2,3-c, d]pyrene (InP) on transcriptomic changes were determined in the liver of Oryzias latipes. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) by binary exposure to cPAHs (BaP+BaA, BaP+BbF, BaP+BkF, BaP+DbA, BaP+InP) were screened by annealing control primers-based polymerase chain reaction followed by sequence analysis and BLAST searching. The results showed that four DEGs were commonly expressed by cPAHs and they were identified as ribosomal protein S4, coagulation factor II, elongation factor 1 beta, and a predicted protein similar to human immunodeficiency virus type I enhancer binding protein 3. This finding suggests that binary exposure to cPAHs interferes protein synthesis required for fundamental liver functions in fish.

  • The objectives of present study were to investigate the effects of benzo[a]pyrene(BaP) on cytotoxicity, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes in rat hepatocyte primary culture. Primary cultures of rat hepatocytes were incubated for 24 hr, 48 hr or 72 hr in the presence of various concentrations (0, 10, 20, 30, 50 or 100 $\mu.$ M) of BaP. Cytotoxicity and cell viability were determined by measuring glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase(GOT) activity, lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) activity and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide(MIT) value. Lipid peroxidation was evaluated using thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS) assay. Effects on antioxidant system were determined by measuring glutathione peroxidase(GPx) activity, glutathione reductase(GR) activity and glutathione concentration. Activities of GOT and LDH, MTT value as well as TBARS concentration were not affected by up to 100 $\muM$ of BaP for 24 hr incubation. However, BaP at the concentration of 50 $\muM$ for 48 hr incubation or at the concentration of 30 $\muM$ for 72 hr incubation began to increase LDH activity and TBARS concentration but decrease MTT value, representing that BaP caused cytotoxicity and decreased cell viability in dose- and time-dependent manners. GPx activity began to be decreased by BaP at the concentration of 50 $\muM$ for 72 hr incubation. Whereas, GR activity began to be decreased by BaP at the concentration of 20 $\muM$ for 72 hr incubation. Glutathione concentration began to be decreased by BaP at the concentration of 20 $\muM$ for 72 hr incubation and was further reduced to 90% by 100 $\muM$ of BaP. These results demonstrate that BaP caused cytoctoxicity and decreased cell viability by increasing lipid peroxidation and decreasing glutathione concentration as well as activities of GPx and GR.

  • Recently, we showed that green tea extract (GTE) markedly lowers the intestinal absorption of $^{14}C$-benzo[a]pyrene ($^{14}C$-BaP) and enhances its secretion into the biliary route, suggesting a protective role for GTE against body burden. These findings indicate that green tea could be used as an effective dietary means against the toxicity of BaP. The present study, therefore, was designed to investigate if green tea intake could affect the tissue distribution and deposition of $^{14}C$-BaP in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats had free access to a nutritionally adequate AIN-93G diet and deionized water. At ~340 g of weight, the rats were injected intraperitoneally with 27.4 kBq of [4-$^{14}C$]-BaP and 5.0 mg of BaP dissolved in $300\;{\mu}L$ of olive oil and then assigned randomly to the following two groups: one group (GTE) of rats was fed the AIN-93G diet with GTE via drinking water at approx. 4.7 mg of catechins/d, whereas the other was fed the same diet but without GTE (control). At 4 wk of dietary treatment with GTE, animals were euthanized and heart, liver, brain, spleen, kidney, retroperitoneal fat, testis, and epididymal fat were collected, weighed, and analyzed for tissue $^{14}C$-BaP. Both the control and GTE groups continuously gained weight throughout the study, but there was no significant difference between the groups. No significant differences were observed in the weights of heart, liver, brain, spleen, kidney, retroperitoneal fat, testis, and epididymal fat. However, the radioactivities of $^{14}C$-BaP, expressed in dpm/g, were significantly lower in the heart, liver, brain, spleen, and epididymal fat of rats receiving GTE as compared to their respective controls. These data indicate that green tea intake markedly lowers tissue accumulation of $^{14}C$-BaP. Taken together, these findings suggest that the decreased tissue levels of BaP by GTE intake may be associated with lowered intestinal absorption of BaP and its enhanced secretion into the bile.
