This study investigated the effect of forest type changes in Daegu, the hottest city in Korea, on the land surface temperature (LST). The LST change by forest type was analyzed by 2scene of Landsat TM image from 1990 to 2007. The land cover types were classified into 4 types; forest areas, urban areas, cultivated areas and other areas, and water areas. The forest areas were further classified into the coniferous tree areas and the broadleaf tree areas. The result of the statistical analysis of the LST change according to the forest type showed that the LST increased when the forest was changed to the urban area. The LST increased by about $0.6^{\circ}C$ when a broadleaf tree area was changed to an urban area and about $0.2^{\circ}C$ when a coniferous tree area was changed to an urban area. This was the temperature change as the result of the simple type change for 17 years. The temperature change was larger when considering both cases of the forest type being retained and changed. The LST increased by $2.3^{\circ}C$ more when the broadleaf tree areas were changed to the urban areas than when broadleaf trees were maintained. The LST increased by $1.9^{\circ}C$ more when the coniferous tree areas were changed to the urban areas than when the coniferous tree areas were maintained. The LST increased by $0.4^{\circ}C$ more when the broadleaf tree areas were destroyed than when the coniferous tree areas were destroyed. The results confirmed that the protection of broadleaf trees in urban forests was more effective for mitigating climate change.

An investigation was performed to draw the decy map of litters on the floors of pine and oak forests in Korea and to reveal the turnover cycles of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in litters. Isodecay constant lines of litter organic matter, which are depended upon the altitude, latitude and orientation, were drawn on the Korean map. The decay constants of organic matter of litters were higher in the broadleaf tree forests than in the needleleaf tree forests, and in the grasslands than in the forests. The amount of mineral nutrients such as N, P, K, Ca and Mg returned annually to soils is higher in the broadleaf tree forests than in the needle leaf tree forests, and highest in the Quercus mongolica forest of the forests.
The ant fauna in Mt. Gariwangsan was composed of 39 species 24 genera 5 subfamilies. The collected ants in Mt. Gariwangsan were Subfamily Myrmicinae(16 species 11 genera), Subfamily Formicinae(15 species 5 genera), Subfamily Ponerinae(6 species 4 genera), Subfamily Amblyoponinae(1 species 1 genera), and Subfamily Dolichoderrinae(1 species 1 genera). Ant fauna by vegetation in Mt. Gariwangsan, 36 species 23 genera were collected in broadleaf tree areas in which Quercus mongolica, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Tilia amurensis, and Cornus controversa were dominant species. Paratrechina flavipes and Myrmica kotokui were dominant species. 13 species 12 genera were collected only in broadleaf tree areas. In the coniferous tree areas where Pinus densiflora, Pinus korainensis, and Larix kaempferi were dominant, 24 species 15 genera of ants in total were collected. Pachycondyla chinensis and Paratrechina flavipes were dominant species. 4 species 3 genera were collected only in the coniferous tree areas. Paratrechina flavipes was dominant even in the areas in which Camponotus japonicas and Formica japonica had been assumed to be dominant. Specifically, the higher the land was, the rarer Ponerinae and Dolichoderinae were observed. The common species observed in both areas were 20 species 13 genera. Of these ants, Paratrechina flavipes(Subfamily Formicinae) and Myrmica kotokui(Subfamily Myrmicinae) were distinctive ants. With regard to the current state of colony of these species, Paratrechina flavipes was dominant in lowland areas. Myrmica kotokui, on the other hand, was dominant in highland areas.

To fulfill the need for reuse indigenous tree to mitigate the elimination of nature forests due to road construction, one representative method for this reuse is to transplant them and re-establish in similar conditions. In order to investigate the transplant and establishment of indigenous tree, a correlation and regression analysis was conducted by species and tree size. Data were collected for 6 years(2008~2013) in 7 construction sites in cooperation with the Korea Expressway Corporation. Regarding the transplanted indigenous trees status, the success rate of transplant was 15,519(69%) of 22,521. The tree most transplanted was Pinus densiflora(15,562), followed by Quercus spp.(6,156), Prunus sargentii(235), and P. thunbergii(154). P. densiflora and P. thunbergii belong to the conifer group while Quercus spp., Prunus sargentii belong to the broadleaf group. As a result of a contrast test, the conifer group had a significantly lower success rate of transplant than the broadleaf group. In the relation of root collar diameter and success rate of transplant, there was the tendency that the larger the root collar diameter, the lower the success rate of transplant. This study demonstrated that there is a strong negative correlation between the two factors(r=-0.730, p>0.000). The predicted regression equation of the success rate of transplant was Y= -0.811X+88.627(X: root collar diameter, Y: success rate of transplant) and the $R^2$ value for the linear equation was 0.532.
Examined the color of ten species of Korean broadleaf trees were experimented based on $L^*a^*b^*$ values and color difference (${\Delta}E^*ab$) between sapwood and heartwood, in order to analyze and determine the color, a critical visual and decorative factor of the broadleaf trees that can be used for making woodcraft and furniture. According to the result, the entire sapwood and heartwood, except the heartwood of Populus tomentiglandulosa, showed positive value in whiteness, redness, and yellowness and therefore contained yellow and red. None of the species showed color difference between sapwood and heartwood that was trace (0~0.5), slight (0.6~1.5), or very much; whereas Populus maximowiczii showed noticeable color difference (1.5~3.0); Salix koreensis, Betula platyphylla var japonica, Carpinus laxiflora, and Castanea crenata, appreciable and Populus tomentiglandulosa, Juglans mandshurica, Betula schmidtii, Alnus japonica, and Quercus variabilis, much. The color characteristics of heartwood and sapwood of the ten Korean broadleaf tree species studied in this research can be used as basic data for woodcraft or furniture production, especially when replacing foreign woods with Korean ones, and also contribute to convergence researches for science, engineering, and design fields.
Although Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) forests near temples are valuable as forests of the cultural landscape, they are likely to be deteriorated because of vegetation succession and climate changes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the vegetation structure, the pine vitality, and the site environmental characteristics of the pine forests near temples to identify the correlation between pine tree growth and location environment. We selected Chuneunsa, Wonhyosa, Jeungsimsa, and Taeansa Temples since these four areas still had the healthy pine forests. In all four studied area, the pine trees dominate the canopy layers while the deciduous broadleaf trees mostly inhabited appeared in the lower layers. The growth of pine trees in Jeungsimsa and Wonhyosa areas was not as good as Chuneunsa area where the pine trees tended to be older. We found higher total nitrogen content in soil in Jeungsimsa area than other areas, maybe because of increase in total nitrogen caused by the development of low vegetation in the area. This peculiarity may have led to the pine trees in the area to fall behind the deciduous broadleaf trees in competition for nitrogen nutrient and thus to show deteriorated growth. The altitude and the twig length showed a negative correlation as did the degree of slope and the mean importance percentage of the pine tree. In other words, the growth environment such as soil became poorer when the altitude and the degree of slope increased, and thus the growth amount and dominance of the pine trees were lower. The degree of slope showed a positive correlation with the twig length of the pine tree. Within boundaries of location environment where the pine tree forests were dominant, it seemed that growth of the pine trees was more favorable as the slope was steeper because the trees could avoid competition with deciduous broadleaf trees. On the other hand, the growth of pine trees deteriorated as the electrical conductivity of soil increased; increase in soil nutrients might have accelerated vegetation development of deciduous broadleaf trees and thus aggravated the growth environment of pine trees to negatively affect maintaining the health of the pine tree forests.
The purpose of this study is to investigate a vegetation structure around Tongdosa temple forest and provincial park and to provide preliminary data. In order to look over the vegetation status, an actual vegetation map was drawn around study area. Vegetation structure survey was carried out for 6 representative communities of actual vegetation which were Quercus variavilis community, Carpinus tschonoskii community, Pinus densiflora community, P. densiflora-Broadleaf deciduous Forest community, Q. mongolica community and Broadleaf deciduous Forest community. The area of the Tongdosa district measured $29,202,262m^2$. Actual vegetation type were divided into 35 types, and the ratio of Q. variavilis community was 32.35 % ($9,447,932m^2$). To investigate the structure of 6 representative communities, 58 plots were set up and unit area plots measured $100m^2$. The estimated age of the forest is 50~100-years-old and the oldest tree P. densiflora is 113-years-old.

The goal of this research is to examine air temperature changes according to tree type, plantation type, roadside green area structure, and green volume of street green area within a city. The plantation type that could be analyzed for comparison by tree type with over 3 species was 1 rows of tree+shrubs. The results of analysis of average air temperature difference between pedestrian and car streets vis-a-vis 1 row of tree+shrub in high air temperature areas were: Pinus densiflora, $1.35^{\circ}C$; Zelkova serrata, $1.84^{\circ}C$; Ginkgo biloba, $2.00^{\circ}C$; Platanus occidentalis, $2.57^{\circ}C$. This standard large wide canopy species was analyzed by the roadside to provide shade to have a significant impact on air temperature reduction. In terms of analysis of the relationship between plantation type of roadside trees and air temperature, the average air temperature difference for 1 row of tree type was $1.80^{\circ}C$; for 2 rows of trees it was $2.15^{\circ}C$. In terms of analysis of the relationship between the roadside green area structure and air temperature, for tree type, average air temperature $1.94^{\circ}C$: for tree+shrub type, average air temperature $2.49^{\circ}C$; for tree+mid-size tree+shrub type, average air temperature $2.57^{\circ}C$. That is, air temperature reduction was more effective in a multi-layer structure than a single layer structure. In the relationship analysis of green volume and air temperature reduction, the air temperature reduction effect was enlarged as there was a large amount of green volume. There was a relationship with the green volume of the road, the size of the tree and number of tree layers and a multi-layer structured form of planting. The canopy volume was large and there were a great number of rows of the tree layer and the plantation type of multi-layer structure, which is what is meant through a relationship with the green volume along the roadside. Green composition standards for air temperature reduction effects and functional improvement were proposed based on the result. For a pedestrian street width of 3m or less in the field being ideal, deciduous broadleaf trees in which the canopy volume is small and the structure of the tree+shrub type through the greatest 1m green bend were proposed. For a pedestrian street width of over 3m, deciduous broadleaf trees in which the canopy volume is large and is multi-layer planted with green bend over 1m, tree+mid-size tree+shrub type was proposed.

Forests are valuable natural resources for people living around the mountains. In particular, the comfortable feeling or healing is one of the most important benefits obtained from forests. This healing can be possible by many aspects of forests, including the landscape, natural sounds, anions, and pleasant aromas. We focused on the volatile organics from forest causing pleasant aromas, phytoncides. Twenty phytoncides were monitored from February to September in a national tree garden (BaekDoDaeGan SooMokWon). Five sites were monitored two times per month and 20 phytoncides were detected. Borneol showed the highest annual average concentration and the order of concentration was borneol > mycene > sabinene > limonene > α-pinene. The average phytoncide concentration was relatively high in spring and summer season when the trees were physiologically active. Daily monitoring showed that the afternoon hours had higher concentrations of phytoncides than the morning hours, which may be due to the stabilized atmospheric conditions at the sites. Among the five sites, coniferous forests gave higher phytoncide emissions than broadleaf tree forests. The current study showed that forests produce several phytoncides that cause a healing effect and a forest bath may be beneficial to the health of visitors to forests.

Litter decomposition is an important process in terrestrial ecosystem. However, studies on decomposition are rare, especially in evergreen broadleaf trees. We collected the leaf litter of five evergreen broadleaf trees (Daphniphyllum macropodum, Dendropanax morbifera, Castanopsis cuspidata var. thunbergii, Machilus thunbergii and Quercus acuta), and carried out a decomposition experiment using the litterbag method in Ju-do, Wando-gun, Korea for 731 days from December 25, 2011 to December 25, 2013. Among the five experimental tree species, C. cuspidata var. thunbergii distribution was limited in Jeju Island, and D. macropodum was distributed at the highest latitude at Mt. Baekyang (N 35°40′). About 2% of the initial litter mass of D. macropodum and D. morbifera remained, while 20.9% remained for C. cuspidata var. thunbergii, 30.4% for M. thunbergii, and 31.6% for Q. acuta. D. macropodum litter decayed four times faster (k = 2.02 yr-1) than the litter of Q. acuta (k = 0.58 yr-1). The decomposition of litter was positively influenced by thermal climate such as accumulated mean daily air temperature (year day index) and precipitation, as well as by physical characteristics such as thickness (R2=0.939, P = 0.007) and specific leaf area (SLA) (R2 = 0.964, P = 0.003). The characteristics of chemical composition such as lignin (R2 = 0.939, P = 0.007) and water-soluble materials (R2 = 0.898, P = 0.014) showed significant correlations with litter decomposition. However, the nutrients in litter showed complicated species-specific trends. The litter of D. macropodum and D. morbifera had fast decomposition despite their low nitrogen concentration and high C/N ratio. This means that the litter decomposition was more strongly affected by physical characteristics than chemical composition and nutrient content. On the other hand, the litter of Q. acuta which had the slowest decay rate had a high amount of N and low C/N ratio. Thus, the decomposition of Q. acuta litter was more affected by the P content of the litter than the N content, although all litter had similar physical characteristics.
