This study was conducted to investigate bird community and to suggest a proper way how to manage and protect bird community in Tokyusan National Park. The survey was carried over 2 main trail districts by line transect method at 20, February and 22, July in 1993. The observed birds were belong to 5 orders 17 families 34 species, they also have Sparrow Hawk Accipiter nisus, Kestrel Falco tinunnculus(natural monument no. 323), White-backed Woodpecker Dendrocopos leucotos(R) and Japanese Waxwing Bombycilla japonica(R). It is estimated that grass region above 1,000m altitude provided breeding habitats for Gray-headed Bunting Emberiza fucata in summer and wintering habitats for Rosy Finch Leucosticte arctoa in winter, This shows that this region should be protected for inhabitation of these birds. Mujukucheontong valley of Tokyusan National Park, which had been a good habitat for valley-inhabituating birds before twenty years ago, has a lower species richness by increasing using density, and so this valley shoud be properly managed urgently.
For balanced development of ornithological research in Korea, it is important to review what birds and what research topics have been studied so far. We quantitatively investigated the trends of domestic ornithological research using text-mining and co-word analysis. As a result of studying 372 articles published in the Korean Journal of Ornithology, which is the most representative ornithological journals, words related to research topics such as population and community monitoring, first record of species and breeding ecology, and heavy metal pollution in birds have been widely used in research articles. Except for subjects such as monitoring and first record of species, studies have not been conducted widely. It was also found that research were concentrated on specific birds such as Anas platyrhynchos, Calidris alpina, and Anas poecilorhyncha. The present study, which analyzed the research topics and avian taxa that were relatively active until now and those which were insufficient, suggests what we should do in the future for the balanced development of ornithological research in Korea.

Carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) accounts for about 72% of the total greenhouse gas emissions. It is also widely known as a major cause of global warming. According to the IPCC's fifth evaluation report, the growth rate of atmospheric $CO_2$ has increased by 35% for the last 100 years and global warming is occurring much more rapidly than expected since 1990s. As a result of climate change, global warming is increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events around the world, which has changed forest vegetation zone and vegetation phenology. The Kyoto Protocol recognizes the importance of forests and refers to the conservation and enhancement of forests as sinks and reservoirs of greenhouse gases. In this regard, studies of tree responses to climate change are indispensable for predicting changes in the forest ecosystems in the future. Therefore, studies using long-term climate change research facilities, associated with long-term ecological research (LTER) in the fields, will make a considerable contribution to predict and approach the changes in the future.
Preference of food plants of wild birds was shown in the order of Pinus densiflora, Celtis sinensis, Celastrus orbiculatus, Rosa multiflora, Taxus cuspidata, and Euonymus japonica, etc. The wild birds preferred the animal food(92.2%) rather than the vegetable food(32.7%) in breeding season(May through June), but preferred both animal and vegetable foods in non-breeding season(November through December). The rates utilzing artficial nest were 77.5%, 50.3%, 44.1% and 42.2% in Nosan, Sanho, Chinju-castle and Bibong parks, respectively. The wild birds used more the 3cm hole than 5cm hole.
An artificial insemination instrument of bumblebee queens was firstly developed. This instrument consists of location tube, transfer tube, holding tube, head product, and probe apparatus for reproductive tract etc. This instrument was designed to minimize stress and damage of reproductive tract of bumblebee queens. The regulator handle apparatus in artificial insemination instrument was used the principle of lever, that manipulates easy, accurate and rapid insemination of bumblebee queens. By using this instrument, the insemination rate was over 90%. This instrument will be useful for the breeding and conservation of excellent character of bumblebees.
This study was conducted to analyze the breeding bird community by using guild concept in Mt. Baekwoon Research Forest of Seoul National University. Bird Community was studied by line transect method during the breeding seasons of birds in 1982 and its results were compared and analyzed with the Park et al. Work in 1993. Guilds were characterized by nesting and foraging sites as follows: nesting guild - (H) hole, (C) canopy, (B) bush, (E) edge; and foraging guild - (o) outside, (c) canopy, (b) bush. Bush-nesting guilds such as Tricolor Flycatcher (Ficedula zanthopygia), Blue-and-White Flycatcher (Cyanoptila cyanomelana), Stonechat (Saxicola torquata), Bush Warbler (cettia diphone) and Skylark (Alauda arvensis) had disappeared after ten years. Outside-foraging guilds such as Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo), sparrow Hawk (Accipiter nisus) and Carrion Crow (Corvus corone) also were not observed. There was a sharp decrease of species richness of bush-nesting guild, canopy-foraging guild and bush-foraging guild compared to ten years ago. These decreases indicate that forest environment of this area has been changed for the ten years, and guild concept in this study can be used usefully to elucidate the change of bird community according to the change in forest environment.
This study was conducted to clarified the relationship between bird community and forest structure and present the counterplan for protection and management of bird community from February 1993 to July 1995 at deciduous and coniferous forest within Mt. Nam area, Seoul, Korea. DBH distribution has not significant differences in each study site. Deciduous forest had more foliage coverage in all layers than coniferous forest. Total 41 species of birds, which were 16 species of resident, 14 species of summer visitor, 4 species of winter visitor, and 7 species of passage migrant were recrded in two study sites. Leaf use rate of birds was increased the increase of coverage. The number of breeding species and pairs, breeding density, and diversity index were greater in deciduous forest than coniferous forest. The number of species and pairs on bush-nesting and foraging guild were greater than other guilds. And the nuber of species and pairs on hole nesting guild were the fewest in nesting guild. Use rate of artificial nests for improvement of habitat quality was greater in coniferous forest than deciduous forest. Maintenance of bush layer, increase of coverage and leaf layer diversity, supply of artificial nests, management of large trees, and control of natural enemy were necessary for protection and management of bird community in Mt. nam area.

The impact of climate change on animals has been globally documented. Especially, migration of birds has been extensively monitored as migratory birds are susceptible to any changes occurring both on breeding grounds and on wintering grounds. However, in contrast to spring migration, the patterns and the factors for autumn migration have not been well documented. In this study, we investigated the relationship with climate condition and the first arrival dates (FADs) of bean geese (Anser fabalis) and white-fronted geese (A. albifrons), the representative group of wintering birds in South Korea, using the data collected by Korean Meteorological Association during 1995-2016. Average temperature of September in wintering grounds has increased, and the FADs of the geese have advanced over the 22 years. Even when the influence of autumn temperature was statistically controlled for, the FADs of the geese have significantly advanced. This suggests that warming has hastened the completion of breeding, which speeded up the arrival of the geese at the wintering grounds. In order to assess the effect of climate condition on the arrival of the wintering migratory birds such as the geese in more detail, extensive data collection over many sampling sites and with long-term monitoring is needed.
Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) is the biodiversity working group of the Arctic Council. CAFF conducts Monitoring, Assessment, Policy, and expert group activities to preserve Arctic biodiversity and ensure the sustainability of biological resources and communicates the results to governments and indigenous peoples. The main tasks of CAFF consist of monitoring (Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program), assessment (Arctic Biodiversity Assessment) and strategic projects(Arctic Migratory Bird Initiative, AMBI). Korea has been directly participating in the AMBI since 2015 after acquiring observer status of the Arctic Council in 2013. The AMBI aims to preserve habitats on migration routes used by breeding birds in the Arctic and prevent illegal hunting. Thus, observer countries on migratory routes are directly participating in the project. When selecting priorities for participation in Arctic cooperation projects by 2030, Korea should consider continuing participation in AMBI and participating in the "CAFF Youth Program" in connection with the Arctic Academy program operated by Korea's public institutes.
One juvenile raptor which was not able to be identified due to its head damage was discovered on a roadside in Janggok-ri, Jori-eup, Paju on 28th June, 2011. The species was identified by DNA barcoding. After polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI), we obtained 695 bp sequences. We analyzed the obtained COI sequence with similar sequences from the BOLD systems and BLAST of the NCBI Genbank, and discovered that its sequence showed 100 % similarity values with the one of the five gray-faced buzzards which were previously researched. In addition, it was confirmed to be a female through sex determination using DNA. Such results are important information as it confirms the breeding of the gray-faced buzzards for the first time in 43 years since its breeding was last recorded in 1968, in Paju. Wildlife rescue center needs to work with adjacent consigned registration and preservation institutions when carcass of wild animals is collected or DNA samples are obtained for more accurate both species and sex identification through a systematic management system in the future. Furthermore, the obtained DNA sample of the gray-faced buzzard and COI gene, DNA barcode, could be used as reference standards for similar researches in the future.
