  • This paper presents a characteristic analysis method for an air gap flux density of axial-flux type brushless dc (BLDC) motor. The magnetic flux density for the torque, and vertical force characteristics is calculated by using analytical method, based on the concept of magnetic charge. The calculated results by the presented method is compared with those by 3 dimensional finite element method (3D FEM). Using the presented method, the characteristics of single and double sided axial-flux type BLDC motors are investigated through distributions of air gap flux density.

  • Recently most machineries have been small size and mobile type. And human body insertion type endoscope and micro robot technology has been developed. Then the motors used in this field are developed in micro size such as about 2mm in diameter. The structure of this motor is similar to a general brushless DC(BLDC) motor but because of small size there is no position sensor such as hall sensor. In this paper, a design and fabrication result of an ultra-small brushless DC motor is presented. This motor is designed to 3-phase coreless winding and operated with sensor-less type driver. Test results confirmed the feasibility of the proposed motor drive system design.

  • In order to reduce the noise of BLDC motor, a systematic optimization procedure for rotor structure is presented. The noise index is defined as the sum of volume velocity of FE-model that are calculated at the dominant frequencies during dehydration process, which is based on the principle of radiation simple volume source. Then, the five design variables are selected to represent the shape and layout or rotor structure. This discrete design optimization problem for minimizing the noise index is solved by 3-level orthogonal array based effect analysis. Finally, the response surface method (RSM) combined optimization approach is employed for more refining the approximate optimum.

  • For permanent magnet brushless DC motors used for high speed fuel pumps, torque ripple is an important origin of vibration, acoustic noise and speed fluctuation. In this paper, the output torque profile of a PM motor with one phase energized is decomposed into the commutation torque, the reluctance torque and the armature reaction torque according to their source origins. It verifies that the output torque profile is qualitatively equivalent to the BEMF profile for low reluctance motors. This paper discusses the effect of magnet pole shaping and magnet arc length on the output torque and torque ripple. A magnet edge shaping is proposed to design a trapezoidal BEMF motor without torque ripple, with minimal sacrifice of the maximum output torque.

  • The inverters used to drive Brushless DC motors (BLDC) include switching devices such as FETs and the faults in FETs cause severe performance degradation in systems where a BLDC acts as actuator. This paper presents a fault detection and isolation method for the FETs of an inverter for BLDC motor control systems, which is based on the EKF (Extended Kalman filter). Firstly, an equivalent circuit model for a BLDC motor plus its inverter system was derived. Secondly, a state-space equation was established, where the on-resistance of the FETs is expressed as a state variable and the EKF equation estimates the on-resistance. If the estimated resistance differs greatly from the known value, it can be asserted that there is a fault on that FET. Thirdly, the local convergence of the established EKF was proved. Finally, through the experiments, the performance of the proposed method was verified. The results show that the on-resistance is estimated close to the value specified in the FET data sheet in normal operation, whereas the estimated resistance is a much larger value than the normal one in case an FET fault occurs. Therefore, it is confirmed that the proposed fault detection and isolation method works appropriately in real systems.

Speed Control of the BLDC Motor using the Disturbance Observer (외란 관측기를 이용한 BLDC 전동기의 속도제어)

  • In this paper, we propose a design method for speed controller, current control of a Brushless Direct Current(: BLDC) motor using disturbance rejection techniques. Disturbance assumes a back electromotive force occurring in the electrical system and the variation of the load acting on the rotary shaft from the outside of the motor. And it assumed to be constant during the time interval and the Luenberger's observer design. So that the error of the observer about the system status can converge to zero show how to set the appropriate gain. Further, to stabilize the whole system, and proposes a method for setting the appropriate PI gain control to improve the tracking performance. By applying the proposed controller to 120W BLDC motors were tested for the ability to follow the velocity and current reference. Since the simulation results of the steady state error is within 0.1%, we were able to show the usefulness of the tracking performance of the proposed controller.

  • This paper proposes an estimation algorithm of phase currents of inverter systems with the planar bus bars for brush-less DC (BLDC) motors. The planar bus bar can improve the characteristic of the EMC(Electro-Magnetic Compatibility). In these inverters, a single current sensor of the dc-link measures the sum of a smooth capacitor current and phase currents of brush-less DC motor. Thus, it is essential to extract phase currents from the measured single current to control BLDC motor. Therefore, in this paper, the phase current is estimated by analyzing equivalent circuits of the BLDCM in ON and OFF periods of switching elements. The usefulness of the proposed algorithm is verified through experimental results.

  • Interest is growing in the design and development of square wave driven BLDC permanent magnet motors suitable for industrial automation, and the development of position detection circuits and drivers. However, this motor is somewhat limited in its application despite the price and functional advantages due to the decrease in efficiency due to switching loss and vibration and noise. In the process of designing and assembling a BLDC motor, the magnetic pole angle is not uniform or the magnetic flux distribution is distorted due to problems in magnetic circuit design or product non-uniformity in the assembly process. Therefore, these things cause position detection deviation and deteriorate the motor characteristics. In addition, the sine wave driven BLDC system can operate stably only when the signal generated from the position sensor is accurately fed back to the driver. However, since the generated signal cannot perform stable position detection due to the occurrence of DC offset component due to magnetic flux density deviation or magnetization technology, which is an external influence, this study intends to study the proposed circuit that can remove the DC offset component.

  • This paper describes a precise position synchronous control of two axes rotating system using BLDC motors and a cooperative control based on decoupling technique and PI control law. The system is required performances both good speed following and minimum position synchronous errors simultaneously. To accomplish these goals, the three kinds of controllers are designed. At first, the current and speed controller are designed very simply to compensate the influences of disturbances and to follow up speed references quickly. Especially, the two degree of freedom PI controller is used considering both good tracking for speed reference input and quick rejection of disturbances in speed controller. Finally, a position synchronous controller is designed as a simple proportional controller to minimize position synchronous errors. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed through some numerical simulations. Moreover, the results are compared to the conventional master-slave control ones to show the effectiveness of the proposed system.

  • Electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) system is the power-assisted steering which operates the hydraulic pump by BLDC motors for assisting the steering force. EHPS consists of BLDC motor, gear pump, oil-hydraulic circuit and steering system. Since EHPS is a convergence system consisting of electricity and electronic, hydraulic and mechanical system, it is difficult to establish the simulation model. In this paper, the mathematical model of EHPS system components were presented, and the simulations of the multi-domain system were performed by using AMESim. The trial and error of development would be reduced by using this simulation results, and it would be helpful for developing high-quality EHPS.
