Recently, the adoption of BIM technology in domestic civil engineering projects has continually increased both in its numbers and scope. However, the BIM model was developed and used after the 2D design was developed instead of creating the BIM model from the conceptual design phase. BIM must be used throughout every phase of design and construction to use BIM for its original purpose. However, if BIM application is applied in heavy civil projects without a step-by-step guideline, it can confuse the market and face industry resistance to using BIM. Therefore, BIM is currently being used step by step in the civil engineering field by using BIM as a conversion design. However, the BIM conversion design method, currently being performed in the Preliminary design stage, has many difficulties due to low work efficiency. This paper analyzes the existing process of converting a 2D design into a 3D BIM model while addressing the issues related to its low work efficiency. To this end, a novel approach to 2D to BIM conversion for the design development stage is proposed.

Although many researchers and practitioners are in agreement about the potential applicability and benefit of BIM in construction, it is still unclear why BIM is adopted, and what factors enhance the adoption and implementation of BIM. As such, the mechanism of BIM acceptance and use remains in question. Therefore, this paper aims to identify the key factors affecting the acceptance of BIM in construction organizations, and to analyze the effect of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation factors on BIM acceptance. The key factors in BIM acceptance are identified through a literature review in TAM (Davis 1989) and related theories, and consolidated by interviews and pilot studies with professionals in the construction industry. Based on the factors, a questionnaire was designed and sent out to a total of 114 construction organizations in Korea, such as contractors, architects, and engineers. Using SPSS 12.0, the data was analyzed to determine the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation factors and BIM acceptance through multiple regression analysis. These findings will clarify what the highly prioritized factors are, and can also be used in an assessment tool for the performance of BIM utilization.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) provides many advantages when it is adopted in virtual design construction, to analyze constructability, etc. For this reason, advanced countries have made it mandatory to adopt BIM in public construction projects. The Korea Public Procurement Service announced that from 2016, BIM adoption will be mandatory in every construction project in Korea. Currently, however, it is not possible to fully adopt BIM in the building design process domestically because BIM-based systems have not been used broadly in Korea's building approval system (Seumter). In this research, four challenges were drawn from a focus group interview. Focusing on tackling one challenge, this paper reviewed previous research into building approval systems and the building approval systems of Singapore, the U.K. and the U.S., and identified elements of the building approval application process and presents a system to create and manage the information. The system supports the creation and management of information and 2D drawings from an IFC-based BIM model. We expect that the system will encourage designers to use BIM from the beginning of the design process and ultimately increase the efficiency of design in a BIM-based project.

In the construction industry, adoption of BIM is a global tendency whereas it doesn't seem to be fully activated in domestic market. Thus, the need of BIM ROI measurement is emerging. There has been a few researches which is only focused on evaluating achievement of BIM in constructional stage. However, it's hard to find any studies on the case of measurement of BIM ROI at the design phase. Therefore, this paper analyzes the domestic and external 12 advanced researches in the measurement of BIM ROI and suggests common investment and return facts. Based on this, this paper proposes a measuring method which is applicable in domestic architectural firms. To determine the appropriateness of the measure, there has been an expert survey and interview. According to the expert survey, the measure itself is practical. But in other survey targeting industry employee, actual profit and efficiency appear to be significantly different from previous expectations. In short, in the domestic conditions in the design stage, the introduction of BIM doesn't have a practical effect and this is one of the main reason why BIM can't be fully functional.

Currently, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an emerging technological shift that involves applying and maintaining an integral digital representation of all building information for different phases of the project life-cycle. Although BIM has been recognized as a main stream in the construction industry, it is difficult to ensure the quality of BIM data due to the problems such as internal errors of BIM tools and lack of guidelines considering design quality. Such problems give lots of difficulties to BIM adoption for designers, constructors, and owners. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the requirements including the object-oriented modeling method and property definition by applying the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) which is an ISO/PAS 16739 standard for ensuring the quality of BIM data. This research aims at proposing the requirements considering the quality of BIM data and demonstrating the efficiency of the requirements with using the Solibri Model Checker (SMC) which is a quality control tool in a case study.
Fire safety engineering is a critical specialization to include in the design of a tall building yet is often excluded from the Building Information Model (BIM) and integrated design process. The design of fire safety systems is interdependent with building/structural geometry, HVAC, mechanical, and electrical systems. A BIM is a 3D visual representation that stores data on these kinds of systems. The compatibility between BIM and fire safety design seems obvious yet has received a dearth of attention in structural (fire) engineering literature. The authors herein have reviewed over 40 recent papers on utilizing BIM for fire safety engineering, focusing on contemporary literature to obtain a more up-to-date review of the state-of-the-art. The resulting trends, technologies, research gaps, and methodologies are presented in this paper. Adoption of BIM in fire safety engineering is slow and behind other disciplines which may be improved if research involved more industry partners. For BIM technology to reach its potential, industry manufacturers need to provide high LOD fire BIM objects, fire engineers and researchers need to collaborate on future advancements, and building owners/management need to be educated on how to use the benefits provided.

The accelerating adoption of BIM (Building Information Modeling) is challenging collaboration practices established in the construction industry. The implementation of BIM involves changes in participants work, organization, processes and collaboration methods. Therefore there is a need to be able to measure effectively and accurately collaboration, in order to analyze and determine current practices and their performances in organizations (company, team project) as well as changes required. Previous researches scope from evaluating BIM maturity of an organization to BIM collaboration requirements but lack of proper tools and methods to analyze collaboration performances. This is especially true when it comes to evaluate the efficiency and collaboration performances of processes rather than systems or organizations. Thus this research aims to analyze systematically and comprehensively previous researches proposing diversified methods to evaluate BIM performances and collaboration. Furthermore it aims to suggest key indicators to evaluate collaboration performances of processes and project organizations. This research may contribute to better understanding of collaboration performances within organizations using BIM and further development of evaluation method for analyzing BIM design project.

The national government is pushing hard the adoption of the BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology in the construction industry. The BIM application provides a visualized environment where the construction manager can inspect the structure of buidling structures. The application also provides information on activity progresses as well as earned values. However, BIM is mostly applied to visualize a structural object with definite forms. The BIM technology needs to be extended to include an object with non-definite forms such as earthwork operations. The objective of this study is to present a prototype of earthwork BIM in the construction operation. The prototype has been built on the attributes of geological information, construction equipment and positioning. The prototype of earthwork BIM shows a 3D graphic simulation of construction equipment moving around for digging and loading.

PMIS has been progressed to signification of collaboration tool which knows the flow of information and facilitates communication between the project participants. However, research has actively been studied combining with BIM to solve this problem as revealed many issues in PMIS. The purpose of this study to analyze a trouble that arise when operating BIM-based PMIS and suggest about grafting Virtual Computing Technology and compatibility analysis on the alternative.
For decades, the productivity issue has been a primary concern for the all stake-holders who participate in domestic construction industry. Especially, between a whole life cycle of building, the construction phase's productivity problem makes or break the entire project. In this respect, the general construction company, who accept the order and construct the building(so called General Contractor), should consider various strategies, such as schedule management, cost management, quality management, inner-crew management, etc., for the productivity improvement., and almost of these management methods have been studied for a long time. But, the researches and studies about the specialty contractor, who construct the building directly in construction site were not sufficiently complete yet. This research begins as an idea which tries to apply the BIM(Building Information Modeling) into the tasks of Specialty contractors for their productivity improvement. And for the effective application of construction BIM to specialty contractors, establish of the BIM project execution plan for them, not the fragmentary adoption of BIM. Therefore, in this paper, we develop the BIM project execution plan for the reinforced concrete companies who conduct the framework construction which located on CP(Critical Path) Especially, we model the "Construction BIM Use List for the RC Work", "BIM Application Master Process" and "BIM Application Detailed Process", and general contractor who use these BIM uses list and process models can manage various specialty contractors about schedule, cost, earned value, quality, safety and environment management systematically.
