  • In this study, red mud/fly ash based geopolymer adsorbents (RFGPA) were prepared with calcination temperatures of 200, 400, and 600 ℃, and the effects of these calcination temperatures on the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) were investigated. In addition, the prepared RFGPA was characterized using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and Brunauer-EmmettTeller (BET) analysis. The results of the adsorption kinetics of MB at RFGPA prepared calcination temperatures indicated that the adsorption equilibrium of MB was reached after about 72 h. From the results of the adsorption isotherm, we verified that the degree of adsorption increased with increasing MB concentrations. In addition, the adsorption amount (Q) of MB decreased with an increase in calcination temperature. The experimental adsorption isotherm data were well fitted to the Freundlich and Sips equations compared to the Langmuir equation. In order to verify the effects of photocatalytic decomposition (C/C0) of MB on Fe2O3 present in prepared RFGPA, the degree of decomposition of MB was examined under dark and visible conditions. Results indicated that the decomposition of MB in visible conditions was about 3.0 times faster than that in dark conditions.

  • In order to develop a dye coloring technology on Conchiolin layer in cultured pearls, appropriate dyes were selected, their solubilities in various solvents were studied, and adsorption and desorption experiments were performed. Solubilities of several basic dyes known to suitable for the pearl coloring, i.e., Rhodamine 6G(R6), Rhodamine B(RB) and Methylene Blue(MB), in several solvents (distilled water, methanol, ethanol, and acetone) were investigated. Among these dyes, R6 was chosen as a dye for single component adsorption and desorption experiment due to the relatively good solubility in various solvents tested. Solubilities of dyes were judged to be enough to color the pearls since dye concentrations in pearl coloring are, in general, not so high. The internal surface area of the pearl layer is believed to be directly related to the dye adsorption, the single-point internal surface area of the pearl layer measured at the nitrogen relative pressure of 0.3 was found to be $0.913m^2/g$, and the BET internal surface area, $1.01m^2/g$ The most probable diameters of micropores and macropores were found to be $40{\AA}$and $5000{\AA}$ respectively, from the pore size distribution data. Adsorption isotherm was well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model, resulting in q=$\frac{1.62C}{1+1.09C^{.}}$

  • This study was aimed ultimately to develop an adsorption process treating heavy metal industrial wastewater by utilizing domestically abundant natural zeolite and the study was conducted in a series of investigations. Presented if1 this paper are the results of the preliminary batch mode test. Factors affecting an adsorption process of heavy metals of aqueous waste stream by zeolite are numerous. Factors such as hydrogen ion concentration and temperature are taken into consideration in the investigation to evaluate adsorptive capacity. The mechanisms of adsorption may better be described by an evaluation of adsorption isotherm andi of adsorption kinetics. It is observed from the preliminary investigation that an optimum adsorption occurs at higher pH's than 4. It is further demonstrated that $Cd^{+2}$ adsorption by zeolite follows the BET model better than the Freundlich and the Langmuir model and that the reaction time of at least 10 minutes is required. It is interesting to note that higher adsorptive capacity was found at higher temperature, suggesting that the adsorption is not only due to simple physisorption but also due to chemisorption.

  • In this study, it was investigated that the feasibility of utilizing inorganic mesostructures for removal of phosphate in water. The comparison of the efficiency for phosphate adsorption between inorganic mesostructures was conducted. X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET) methods were used to characterize these mesostructures. The efficiencies of silica and titanium mesostructures for the removal of phosphate from aqueous solution were investigated. Equilibrium data were analyzed using the Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacities of mesostructure adsorbents were found to be 49.3 and 19.5 mg $g^{-1}$ for the titanium and silica mesostructures, respectively. The adsorption kinetics was described by a pseudo third-order kinetic model. The results from this study indicated that the titanium mesostructure has the potential to be utilized for the cost-effective removal of phosphate from wastewater.

  • Adsorption characteristics of $H_{2}S$ on KOH impregnated activated carbon were evaluated using dynamic adsorption method in a fixed bed. The pore properties, including BET's specific surface area, pore volume, pore size distribution, and mean pore diameter of these KOH impregnated activated carbons, were characterized from $N_{2}$ adsorption/desorption isotherms. Adsorption equilibrium data were correlated with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The adsorption of $H_{2}S$ onto the KOH impregnated activated carbon is better fitted by the Langmuir isotherm. An increase in the content of oxygen affects the performance of KOH impregnated activated carbon to the greatest extent.

  • Natural white clay was treated with 6 M of H2SO4 and heated at 80℃ for 6 h under mechanical stirring and the resulting acid active clay was used as an adsorbent for the removal of Cs+ in water. The physicochemical changes of natural white clay and acid active clay were observed by X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF), BET Surface Area Analyser and Energy Dispersive X-line Spectrometer (EDX). While activating natural white clay with acid, the part of Al2O3, CaO, MgO, SO3 and Fe2O3 was dissolved firstly from the crystal lattice, which bring about the increase in the specific surface area and the pore volume as well as active sites. The specific surface area and the pore volume of acid active clay were roughly twice as high compared with natural white clay. The adsorption of Cs+ on acid active clay was increased rapidly within 1 min and reached equilibrium at 60 min. At 25 mg L- of Cs+ concentration, 96.88% of adsorption capacity was accomplished by acid active clay. The adsorption data of Cs+ were fitted to the adsorption isotherm and kinetic models. It was found that Langmuir isotherm was described well to the adsorption behavior of Cs+ on acid active clay rather than Freundlich isotherm. For adsorption Cs+ on acid active clay, the Langmuir isotherm coefficients, Q, was found to be 10.52 mg g-1. In acid active clay/water system, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was more suitable for adsorption of Cs+ than the pseudo-first-order kinetic model owing to the higher correlation coefficient R2 and the more proximity value of the experimental value qe,exp and the calculated value qe,cal. The overall results of study showed that acid active clay could be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of Cs+ from water.

  • The potential use of egg shell and calcined egg shell as adsorbent was evaluated and compared to remove Cd2+ from aqueous solution. The samples were characterized using Thermogravimetry and Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTA), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (EDX) and BET Surface Analyzer. The batch-type adsorption experiment was conducted by varying diverse variables such as contact time, pH, initial Cd2+ concentrations and adsorbent dosage. The results showed that, under the initial Cd2+ concentrations ranged from 25 to 200 mg g-1, the removal efficiencies of Cd2+ by egg shell powder (ESP) were decreased steadily from 96.72% to 22.89% with increase in the initial Cd2+ concentration at 2.5 g of dosage and 8 h of contact time. However, on the contrary to this, calcined egg shell powder (CESP) showed removal efficiencies above 99% regardless of initial Cd2+ concentration. The difference in the adsorption behavior of Cd2+ may be explained due to the different pH values of ESP and CESP in solution. Cd2+ seems to be efficiently removed from aqueous solution by using the CESP with a basicity nature of around pH 12. It was also observed that an optimum dosage of ESP and CESP for nearly complete removal of Cd2+ from aqueous solution is approximately 5.0 g and 1.0 g, respectively. Consequently, Cd2+ is more favorably adsorbed on CESP than ESP in the studied conditions. Adsorption data were applied by the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetics models and Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models, respectively. With regard to adsorption kinetics tests, the pseudo-second-order kinetics was more suitable for ESP and CESP. The adsorption pattern of Cd2+ by ESP was better fitted to Langmuir isotherm model. However, by contrast with ESP, CESP was described by Freundlich isotherm model well.

  • A $TiO_2$ films in dye-sensitized solar cells was fabricated using $TiO_2$ colloidal sol prepared from titanium iso-propoxide used as a starting material by applying the sol-gel method. It was characterized by particle size analyzer, XRD, FE-SEM, and BET analysis. The adsorption isotherms of dye molecule on $TiO_2$ films were obtained at three different temperatures (30, 45, $60^{\circ}C$) and at three different pH (3, 5, 7). The adsorption kinetics of dye molecule on $TiO_2$ films were obtained at three different temperatures (30, 45, $60^{\circ}C$. The adsorption experimental data were correlated with Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order model. Also the isosteric enthalpies of dye adsorption were calculated by the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. In addition, the adsorption energy distribution functions which describe heterogeneous characteristics of nanocrystalline $TiO_2$ film surface were calculated by using the generalized nonlinear regularization method. We found that efficient adsorption of N719 dye from aqueous solution onto $TiO_2$ films can be successfully achieved by dye adsorption conditions and morphology of $TiO_2$ films.

  • Ammonia gas as a hydrogen source has received great attention since the importance of hydrogen gas as a clean energy source increased. However, ammonia is toxic and corrosive to metal such that the absorbent that can store and transport ammonia became an important issue. As an effort to solve this, a large pored covalent organic framework, COF-10 was proposed as an adsorbent for storage and safe transportation of ammonia. During the ammonia adsorption process, boron in COF-10 structure can act as a Lewis acid site and bind with ammonia. In this study, COF was synthesized and its structure was identified by BET, XRD and FT-IR. The adsorption characteristics of COF were investigated by TPD and adsorption isotherm. The COF-10 showed an excellent adsorption capacity for ammonia (9.79 mmol/g) which could be utilized as an ammonia adsorbent.

  • In this study, activated clay treated with H2SO4 (20% by weight) and heat at 90 ℃ for 8 h for acid white soil was used as an adsorbent for the removal of PO43--P in water. Prior to the adsorption experiment, the characteristics of activated clay was examined by X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF) and BET surface area analyser. The adsorption of PO43--P on activated clay was steeply increased within 0.25 h and reached equilibrium at 4 h. At 5 mg/L of low PO43--P concentration, roughly 98% of adsorption efficiency was accomplished by activated clay. The adsorption data of PO43--P were introduced to the adsorption isotherm and kinetic models. It was seen that both Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms were applied well to describe the adsorption behavior of PO43--P on activated clay. For adsorption PO43--P on activated clay, the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm coefficients, KF and Q, were found to be 8.3 and 20.0 mg/g, respectively. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model was more suitable for adsorption of PO43--P in water/activated clay system owing to the higher correlation coefficient R2 and the more proximity value of the experimental value qe,exp and the calculated value qe,cal than the pseudo-first-order kinetics model. The results of study indicate that activated clay could be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of PO43-P from water.
