Continuous concrete beams are commonly used as structural members in the reinforced concrete constructions. The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars provide attractive solutions for these structures particularly for gaining corrosion resistance. This paper presents experimental results of eight two-span continuous concrete beams; two of them reinforced with pure glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars and six of them reinforced with combinations of GFRP and steel bars. The continuous beams were tested under monotonically applied loading condition. The experimental load-deflection behavior and failure mode of the continuous beams were examined. In addition, the continuous beams were analyzed with a numerical method to predict the load-deflection curves and to compare them with the experimental results. Results show that there is a good agreement between the experimental and the theoretical load-deflection curves of continuous beams reinforced with pure GFRP bars and combinations of GFRP and steel bars.
Bond between reinforcing bar and surrounding concrete is supposed to transfer load safely in the process of design of reinforced concrete structures. The effects of defomation properties on bond of reinforcing bars to concrete are studied. Beam-end tests are used to investigate the effects of machining of bars in addition to rib angle and relative rib area. The test results show that bond strength of machined bars were higher than the conventional bars produced in factory. Higher rib height bars with rib angle $30^{\circ}{\sim}60^{\circ}$ showed higher bond strength than lower rib height bars with low angle.
This study investigates the effect of the diameters of reinforcement bars located in an euro-form before placing concrete in a cold weather condition. The diameters of reinforcement bars with 13 mm, 19 mm, 25 mm and 32 mm were prepared for the experimental tests. Results showed that the larger the size of the diameter of the bars, the higher were the temperature drop. However, this study found that its effect on the temperature drop of the bars was insignificant.
Spray patterns were visualized using the shadowgraph method, and the droplet size and velocity were measured using PDPA for high-pressure injections up to 2,600 bars. The spray pattern and spray characteristics, such as penetration, spray width, spray angle, droplet size, injection duration, and droplet velocity, were investigated to determine the suitable injection pressure. Spray penetration, width, angle, and velocity increased continuously up to 2,600 bars with the injection pressure in a high-pressure region. The rate of improvement of the above spray characteristics, however, declined rapidly, when the injection pressure reached 2,000 bars. The injection duration and droplet size generally decreased with the increase in the injection pressure, while the rate of improvement decreased abruptly after 2,000 bars. Consequently, the improvement rate of the spray characteristics became blunt at over 2,000 bars. This means that the suitable injection pressure is around 2,000 bars.
The use of spliced reinforcing bars in sustainable concrete members to manage inadequate bars length is a common practical issue which is may be due to some limitations. The lap splicing means two bars overlapped in parallel with specified length called the splice length in order to provide the required bond between the two bars. The bond between sustainable concrete and spliced steel bars is another important issue. The normal strength sustainable concrete specimens of sizes 1700×150×150 mm with tension reinforcement lap spliced were selected according to testing device length limitations. These members were designed to fail in flexure in order to investigate the lap spliced tension bars effect. The selected lap spliced tension bars were of 10 mm size with smooth and deformed surfaces in order to investigate the surface nature accompanied with the splice nature. The sustainable concrete mechanical properties and mix workability were also studied. This study reveals that the effect of number of spliced bars on the response of beams reinforced with smooth bars is found to be more obvious than deformed one. Finite element modeling in three dimensions was carried out for the tested beams using ABAQUS software. A parametric study is carried out using finite elements on considering the following parameters, concrete compressive strength, load type and opening in cross section (hollow section) for weight reduction purposes. The laboratory and numerical results show good agreements in terms of ultimate load and deflection with an average difference of 10% and 15% in ultimate load and deflection respectively.
This paper investigates the applicability of newly developed Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloy (SMA) bars to retrofitting of historical masonry constructions by performing quasi-static tests of half-scale brick walls subjected to cyclic out-of-plane flexure. Problems associated with conventional steel reinforcing bars lie in pinching, or degradation of stiffness and strength under cyclic loading, and in their inability to restrain residual deformations in structures during and after intense earthquakes. This paper attempts to resolve the problems by applying newly developed Cu-Al-Mn SMA bars, characterized by large recovery strain, low material cost, and high machinability, as partial replacements for steel bars. Three types of brick wall specimens, unreinforced, steel reinforced, and SMA reinforced specimens are prepared. The specimens are subjected to quasi-static cyclic loading up to rotation angle enough to cause yielding of reinforcing bars. Corresponding nonlinear finite element models are developed to simulate the experimental observations. It was found from the experimental and numerical results that both the steel reinforced and SMA reinforced specimens showed substantial increment in strength and ductility as compared to the unreinforced specimen. The steel reinforced specimen showed pinching and significant residual elongation in reinforcing bars while the SMA reinforced specimen did not. Both the experimental and numerical observations demonstrate the superiority of Cu-Al-Mn SMA bars to conventional steel reinforcing bars in retrofitting historical masonry constructions.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality characteristics of rice nutritional bars prepared by adding Chinese artichoke (CA) powder to the rice powder. Methods: CA rice nutritional bars were prepared with various levels of CA powder (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) and designated as CA0 (without CA powder), CA5, CA10, CA15, and CA20, respectively. The total phenolic content, DPPH free radical scavenging activity, moisture content, pH, baking loss rate, leavening rate, volume, color, texture analysis, and sensory evaluations of rice nutritional bars were performed. Results: The total phenolic content and DPPH free radical scavenging activity exhibited an increase with increase in the substitute amount of CA powder. The results showed that the pH of rice nutritional bars decreased in all sample groups as the content of CA powder increased. The volume of the sample group with CA powder was higher than that of CA0. As the content of CA powder increased, lightness of the rice nutritional bars crumbs decreased while redness and yellowness increased. The texture analysis of rice nutritional bars showed that hardness, gumminess, and chewiness were the highest in CA0 while springiness and cohesiveness were the lowest in CA0. With respect to characteristic intensity rating, the taste, flavor, and softness of rice nutritional bars increased with increasing amounts of CA powder. In terms of consumer acceptability, CA15 and CA20 received the highest scores with respect to texture. Conclusion: Therefore, the results of this study indicate that replacing 15% of the rice powder with CA led to an efficient enhancement in the antioxidant and nutritional values of rice nutritional bars as well as the sensory quality.
For the last four decades, tension test of notched bars has been performed to investigate the effect of stress triaxiality on ductile fracture. To quantify the effect of the notch radius on stress triaxiality, the Bridgman equation is typically used. However, recent works based on detailed finite element analysis have shown that the Bridgman equation is not correct, possibly due to his assumption that strain is constant in the necked ligament. Up to present, no systematic work has been performed on fully plastic stress fields for notched bars in tension. This paper presents fully plastic results for tension of notched bars and plates in plane strain, via finite element limit analysis. The notch radius is systematically varied, covering both un-cracked and cracked cases. Comparison of plastic limit loads with existing solutions shows that existing solutions are accurate for notched plates, but not for notched bars. Accordingly new limit load solutions are given for notched bars. Variations of stress triaxiality with the notch radius and depth are also given, which again indicates that the Bridgman solution for notched bars is not correct and inaccuracy depends on the notch radius and depth.
The steel bars account for a high percentage of material costs for the current construction projects. At the present time, most of the construction projects for the factories of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) complete the transactions of steel bars when the suppliers ship the steel bars to the temporary storage/processing sites. This paper applies the buy-in concept in the Theory of Constraint (TOC) on the supply chain of steel bars. In this study, suppliers are required to establish warehouses at the construction sites and complete the transactions when the formed and processed steel bars are shipped into the factory sites. The aim is to find a win-win solution to meet with the expectations from constructors as they hope that there is no need to build up inventories but supply is ready at any time. Also, this paper compares and analyzes the traditional supply/inventory model of steel bars and the Demand-Pull (D-P) model under the TOC framework. It is proved that Vendor Management Inventory (VMI) in the D-P model is able to more effectively manage steel bars as a material.
Bar fractions depend on the properties of host galaxies. However, the observational studies did not provide consistent tendency. We investigated the bar fractions and their dependence on properties of host galaxies using three bar classifications: visual inspection, ellipse fitting method and Fourier analysis from a volume-limited sample of 1,698 disk galaxies brighter than Mr=-15.2 within z = 0.01 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7). We found two causes to make the discrepancy in previous studies. One is caused by the difficulty in automatically identifying bars for bulge-dominated galaxies. In particular, ellipse fitting methods could miss early-type barred galaxies when a large bulge weakens the transition between a bar and disk. The other is caused by the difference in the correlation between the bar types and host morphology for strong bars and weak bars. Strong bars are preponderant in early-type spirals which are red, bulge-dominated and highly concentrated, whereas weak bars are frequent in late-type spirals which are blue, disk-dominate and less-concentrated. Therefore, how much weak bars they contain affects the trend of bar fraction on host galaxy properties. We also discuss the effect of host properties on the formation, evolution, and destruction of bars.
