  • Let .ohm.$_{n}$ and Pm $t_{n}$ denote the sets of all n*n doubly stochastic matrices and the set of all n*n permutation matrices respectively. For m*n matrices A=[ $a_{ij}$ ], B=[ $b_{ij}$ ] we write A.leq.B(A$a_{ij}$ .leq. $b_{ij}$ ( $a_{ij}$ < $b_{ij}$ ) for all i=1,..,m; j=1,..,n. Let $I_{n}$ denote the identity matrix of order n, let $J_{n}$ denote the n*n matrix all of whose entries are 1/n, and let $K_{n}$=n $J_{n}$. For a complex square matrix A, the permanent of A is denoted by per A. Let $E_{ij}$ denote the matrix of suitable size all of whose entries are zeros except for the (i,j)-entry which is one.hich is one.

  • A problem raised by Selfridge and solved by Pomerance asks to find the pairs (a, b) of natural numbers for which $2^a\;-\;2^b$ divides $n^a\;-\;n^b$ for all integers n. Vajaitu and one of the authors have obtained a generalization which concerns elements ${\alpha}_1,\;{\cdots},\;{{\alpha}_{\kappa}}\;and\;{\beta}$ in the ring of integers A of a number field for which ${\Sigma{\kappa}{i=1}}{\alpha}_i{\beta}^{{\alpha}i}\;divides\;{\Sigma{\kappa}{i=1}}{\alpha}_i{z^{{\alpha}i}}\;for\;any\;z\;{\in}\;A$. Here we obtain a further generalization, proving the corresponding finiteness results in a multidimensional setting.

  • It is possible to enhance the color of the natural diamond with a high pressure high temperature(HPHT) process. We employed a pyrophyllite tube cell and cubic press apparatus for HPHT treatment on the brown colored Type II (5.6 GPa/ $1700^{\circ}C$/ 52 min), and Type I aB(5.6 GPa/ $1650^{\circ}C$/ 30 min) diamond samples. We investigated the microstructure, Types, fluorescence, properties of the diamonds with an optical microscopy, FT-IR, photoluminescence(PL) spectroscopy, Diamond-View, and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Two tinted brown diamonds changed into colorless just after the HPHT process. Optical microscopy showed that no crack and significant inclusion evolution occurred during the HPHT process except the small graphite spot appeared in Type I aB sample. FTIR spectrum confirmed that no Type, amber center, and platelet defect change with the HPHT treatment. Diamond-View could not distinguish the HPHT treated diamonds from the naturals. PL spectroscopy showed that N3 and H3 color centers remained even after HPHT process. Consequently, we successfully changed the color of diamonds into colorless by 5.6 GPa HPHT process.

  • This paper presents the miniaturization of circularly polarized microstrip patch antenna for UHF-band RFID portable reader. The proposed antenna has a group of four I-slots on a conventional corner-truncated square microstrip patch and it is shown that the antenna size is reduced compared to the antenna without I-slots. A 76 mm by 76 mm small antenna with four I-slots is fabricated with 6.4 mm thick FR4 substrate and its 10 dB return loss bandwidth, the gain and the axial ratio are measured to be $938{\sim}975\;MHz$, $-0.88{\sim}-2\;dBi$, and $3.27{\sim}13.21\;dB$ within the 10 dB return loss bandwidth, respectively.

  • An ATM/AAL2 is standardized to transmit delay sensitive application services, which has small size packet, efficiently. An AAL2 transmission scheme is used to deliver voice and data traffic on the lob interface between base station (Node-B) and Radio Network Controller (RNC) in UMTS network. To predict AAL2 performance, a detailed end-to-end UMTS network performance simulator was developed. We performed detailed simulation(cell packing density and bandwidth gain) for voice and data services in UTRAN. The results indicate that the maximum bandwidth gain in Node-B is about 17% and the bandwidth gain of AAL2 multiplexing in $I_{ub}$ for data services is less than that for voice service. Futhermore, the more offered load increase the more the bandwidth gain decreases in a concentrator.

  • Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 are important inflammatory mediators that have been implicated in pathogenesis of inflammation and certain types of human cancers. The present study was designed in order to determine whether Wild ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Mayer) could modulate $I{\kappa}B$-kinase (IKK), iNOS and COX-2 gene expression and its immune responses in RAW 264.7 macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 1 ${\mu}/m{\ell}$). Wild ginseng extract dose-dependantly (*0.5 - 2 ${\mu}/m{\ell}$) decreased the LPS-induced IKK, iNOS and COX-2 mRNA expression and its immune responses. Moreover, it inhibited unclear factor (NF)-${\kappa}B$ immune response by LPS. These data be likely to indicate that Wild ginseng may acts as inflammatory regulator and may be possible to develope a useful agent for inflammatory diseases.

  • More than 8 millions of chemical have been used for human activities and lots of chemicals can not be degraded by microbial activities in this world. To show the biodegradability of a chemical, biodegradability index (B.I.) is suggested using aerobic biodegradability by $BOD_5$/COD, anaerobic biodegradability by methane potential (M.P.) and toxicity by the luminiscent bacteria. In this study, PVA (polyvinyl alcohol), HEC (hydroxy ethyl cellulose), 2,4,6-TCP (tri-chloro phenol) and 2,4-DCP (di-chloro phenol) are used for test chemicals. Though they show little toxicity, PAV and HEC have low B.I. because they are polymers having high molecular weight. That means that there are no bacteria that has enzyme to degrade polymer molecules. Also, anaerobic treatment is suggested better than aerobic treatment from B.I. 2,4,6-TCP and 2,4-DCP show high toxicity and have low B.I. Their low biodegradabilities seem to be originated from their toxicities. If B.I. is used in wastewater treatment, better treatment process can be suggested and finally it can lead our society to make more environment-friendly chemicals.

  • We examined the effects of Kamgil-Tang on the process of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced unclear factor (NF)-${\kappa}$ Bp65 and inhibitory (I)-${\kappa}$ B${\alpha}$ alteration in RAW 264.7 cell and acute lung injury in rats. Immunoblot analysis showed that LPS-induced degradation of I-${\kappa}$ B${\alpha}$ in RAW 264.7 was inhibited by pretreatment of Kamgil-Tang. The total cells of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid by LPS challenge markedly decreased in the Kamgil-Tang pretreatment rats. Kamgil-Tang pretreatment caused also a decline in neutrophils infiltration into interstitium of the lung. In the alveolar macrophages and neutrophils, decreased NF-${\kappa}$ Bp65 and inducible nitric oxide synthase and increased I-${\kappa}$ B${\alpha}$ immunoreaction were detected in Kamgil-Tang pretreated rats compared with LPS alone treated ones. It may be concluded that Kamgil-Tang attenuates the development of LPS-induced inflammation by reduction of NF-${\kappa}$ Bp65 activation and neutrophil-mediated acute lung injury. Kamgil-Tang would be useful as a therapeutic agent for endotoxin-induced lung disease.

  • In epistatic grouping of uvs genes in A. nidulans based on the sensitivities to 4-NQO, the same epistatic grouping was obtained as those for UV and MMS-sensitivities. Based on the MMS-sensitivities, uvsA demonstrated synergistic interactions to uvsF and uvsH, the UvsF group genes, but exhibited epistatic interactions to uvsB and uvsC. The same epistatic grouping was also seen for uvsI when UV was irradiated after 4h germination of conidia, showing synergistic interactions to uvsH, uvsC, and uvsB. However, epistatic interactions were observed with uvsF, which were different from those obtained in quiescent conidia by UV. Intergenic and intragenic recombination frequencies were normal in uvsI compared with wild type.

  • The correlation between GABA receptors($GABA_A$ and $GABA_B$ receptor) and benzodiazepine receptor on the saline infusion-induced micturition reflex contraction was studied in the female rat. To investigate the effect of ${\gamma}-aminobutyric$ acid(GABA) on the micturition reflex, exogenous GABA(10 mg/kg) and GABA transaminase inhibitor(aminooxyacetic acid; AOAA $1\;{\mu}g$) were administered intravenously(i.v.) and intracerebroventriculary(i.c.v.), respectively. In result, both GABA and AOAA inhibited the saline induced micturition reflex contraction. This AOAA induced inhibition of micturition reflex was blocked by both bicuculine. $GABA_A$ receptor antagonist, and Ro 15-1788, benzodiazepine receptor antagonist. Muscimol, $GABA_A$ receptor antagonist($0.1\;{\mu}g$ i.c.v., $3\;{\mu}g$ intrathecal; i.t., 1 mg/kg i.v.) and baclofen, $GABA_A$ receptor agonist($1\;{\mu}g$ i.c.v., $3\;{\mu}g$ i.t., 1 mg/kg i.v.) also inhibited the bladder contraction. Pretreatment of bicuculline($1\;{\mu}g$ i.c.v.), but not of 5-aminovaleric acid(AVA, $1\;{\mu}g$ i.c.v.), $GABA_B$ receptor antagonist blocked the central inhibition of muscimol. These inhibitory effects were reversed by Ro15-1788 but were potentiated by flurazepam, benzodiazepine receptor antagonist. On the other hand, the inhibitory effects of baclofen were not affected by Ro 15-1788. Diazepam and flurazepam also inhibited the micturition reflex contraction when they were administered $3\;{\mu}g$ i.c.v., $10\;{\mu}g$ i.t., $10\;{\mu}M$, $30\;{\mu}M$ transurethrally, respectively. In conclusion, these results suggest that the micturition reflex is mediated by $GABA_A$, $GABA_B$ receptor and benzodiazepine receptor. The bezodiazepines increase the receptor binding of GABA to the $GABA_A$ receptor, so that the benzodiiazepines show the synergistic effect on the inhibition of the micturition reflex contraction, but not to the $GABA_B$ receptor.
