  • The rotor overhang is used to enhance the air-gap flux and improve the power density. Due to the asymmetry in the axial direction caused by the overhang, a time consuming 3D analysis is necessary when designing a motor with overhang. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an equivalent magnetic circuit model (EMCM) which takes account overhang effects without a 3D analysis by using effective air-gap length. The analysis time can be reduced significantly via the proposed EMCM. A reduction in the analysis time is essential for a preliminary design of a motor. In order to verify the proposed model, a 3-D finite-element method (FEM) analysis is adopted. 3-D FEM results confirm the validity of the proposed EMCM.

  • We have developed an electromagnetic generator to bury in subcutaneous area or abdominal cavity of the birds. As we can't use a solar battery, it is extremely difficult to supply a power for subcutaneous implantation such as biosensors under the skin due to the darkness environment. We are aiming to test the antigen-antibody reaction to confirm an avian influenza. One solution is a very small generator with the electromagnetic induction coil. We attached the developed coil to chickens and pheasants and recorded the electric potential generated as the chicken walked and the pheasant flew. The electric potential generated with physical simulator is equal to or exceeds the 7 V peak-to-peak at maximum by 560/min of flapping of wings. Even if we account for the junction voltage of the diode (200 mV), efficient charging of the double-layer capacitor is possible with the voltage doubler rectifier. If we increase the voltage, other problems arise, including the high-voltage insulation of the double-layer capacitor. For this reason, we believe the power generated to be sufficient for subcutaneous area of birds. The efficiency, magnetic 2 mm in length and coil 15mm in length, if axial direction is rectified, the magnetic flux density given to the coil could calculated to 7.1 % and generated power average 0.47mW. The improvements in size and wire insulation are expected in the future.

  • This paper investigates the permanent magnet (PM) overhang effect on the characteristics such as cogging torque and torque in brushless DC motor (BLDCM). The overhang effect has been used to enlarge the performance of the radial flux density in BLDCM and balance the force in the axial direction for the reduction of the vibration. 3D equivalent magnetic circuit network method (3D EMCNM) is used for the accurate and efficient analysis. The characteristics of BLDCM are analyzed according to the variation of overhang length and the optimal length and ratio of overhang is determined.

  • To understand the basic the structure of the spray field and to obtain the initial conditions for computational models for shear coaxial twin-fluid injectors. the atomization characteristics under different flow and geometric conditions were examined. The spray characteristics such as SMD, mean axial and radial velocities, Dia. of droplets and volume flux with a P.D.P.A. Water and nitrogen gas under atmospheric conditions were used as a test fluids. The drops produced by shear coaxial injectors continue to disintegrate along the spray axis and decrease their sizes. SMD was the maximum at the spray center of spray and decreased with increasing radial distance. The results of this parametric study showed that SMD decreased with increasing gas injection velocity as well as with decreasing liquid injection mass flow rate, The relative velocity between gas and liquid flow played a significant role resulted in decreasing SMD and in spreading the spray. Recessing the liquid orifice resulted decreasing SMD and a spreading the spray. Recess of liquid orifice by 5.0mm showed best atomization characteristics in this experiment. Although drop diameter changes, shear coaxial injector sprays had constant velocity and exhibited a high degree of radial symmetry.

  • The characteristics of flows, temperatures, and concentrations of oxygen are numerically studies in the Czochralski furnace with a uniform axial magnetic field. Important governing factors to the flow fields include buoyancy, thermocapillarity, centrifugal force, magnetic force, diffusion and segregation coefficients of the oxygen, evaporation coefficient in the form of SiO, and ablation rate of crucible wall. With an assumption that the flow fields have reached the steady state, which means that two velocity components in the meridional plane and circumferential velocity, temperatures, electric current intensity become non-transient, then unsteady concentration field of oxygen has been analyzed with an initially uniform oxygen concentration. Oxygen transports due to convection and diffusion in the Czochralski flow field and oxygen flux through the growing crystal surface has been investigated.

  • Instead of direct driving like BLDC, the induction principle is adopted as a driving one for planar stage. The stage composed of four linear induction motors put in square type is activated by two-axial forces; low-frequency attractive force and thrust force of the linear induction motors. Here, the modified vector control whose new inputs are q-axis current and dc current biased to three phase current instead of d-axis current or flux current is applied extensively to overall motion of the stage. For the developed system, the precision step test and the constant velocity test are tried to guarantee its feasibility for TFT-LCD pattern inspection. However, to exclude a discontinuity due to phase shift and minimize a force ripple synchronized with the command frequency, the initial system is revised to the antagonistic structure over the full degree of freedom. Concretely describing, the porous air bearings guide an air-gapping of the stage up and down and a pair of liner induction motors instead of single motor are activated in the opposite direction each other. The performances of the above systems are compared from trapezoid tracking test and sinusoidal test.

  • In order to more closely examine the vacuum arc phenomena, it is necessary to predict the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) characteristics by the multidisciplinary numerical modeling, which is coupled with the electromagnetic and hydrodynamic fields, simultaneously. In this study, the thermal-fluid characteristics of high current vacuum arcs were calculated by a commercial multiphysics package, ANSYS, in order to obtain Joule heat, Lorentz force and the interactions with flow variables. We assumed the diffused-mode arc within an AMF vacuum interrupter. It was found with four different currents that the temperature distributions on the anode surface are diffused uniformly without concentration in 7kA for both types (cup and coil-type). But the arc plasma transition and an increase of thermal flux density for increasing the applied current have caused the change of temperature distributions on the anode surface. We should need further studies on the two-way coupling method and radiation model for arc plasmas in order to accomplish the advanced analysis method for multiphysics.

  • Numerical simulation of an axisymmetric ethylene-air jet diffusion flame has been carried out in order to investigate flame dynamics and soot formation. The model solves the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations and includes models for soot formation, chemical reaction, molecular diffusion, thermal conduction, and radiation. Numerically FCT(Flux Corrected Transport) and DOM(Discrete Ordinate Method) methos are used for convection and radiation trasport respectively. Simulation was conducted for a 5 cm/sec fuel jet flowing into a coflowing air stream. The maximum flame temperature was found to be approximately 2100 K, and was located at an axial position of approximately 5 cm from the base of the flame. The maximum soot volume fraction was about $7{\times}10^{-7}$, and was located within the high temperature region where the fuel mole fraction ranges from 0.01 to 0.1. The buoyancy-driven low-frequency(12~13 Hz) structures convected along the outer region of the flame were captured. In case without radiation trasport, the maximum temperature was higher by 150 K than in case with radiation. Also the maximum soot volume fraction reached about $8{\times}10^{-6}$. As the the hydrocarbon fuel forms many soot particles, the radiation transport becomes to play a more important role.

  • Three-dimensional flow analysis is implemented to investigate the flow through transonic axial-flow compressor rotor(NASA R67) and to evaluate the performances of Abid's low-Reynolds-number k-$\omega$ and Baldwin-Lomax turbulence models. A finite volume method is used fur spatial discretization. The equations are solved implicitly in time by the use of approximate factorization. The upwind difference scheme is used for inviscid terms and viscous terms are approximated with central difference. The flux-difference-splitting method of Roe is used to obtain fluxes at the cell faces. Numerical analysis is performed near peak efficiency and near stall. The results are compared with the experimental data for NASA R67 rotor. Blade-to-Blade Mach number distributions are compared to confirm the accuracy of the code. From the results, it is concluded that Abid'k-$\omega$ model is better for the calculation of flow rate and efficiency than Baldwin-Lomax model. But, the predictions for Mach number and shock structure are almost the same.

  • An Exponential experiment system which is composed of a neutron detector, a signal analysis system and a neutron source, Cf-252 has been installed in order to experimentally determine the neutron effective multiplication factor for a PWR spent fuel assembly. The axial background neutron flux is measured in a preliminary performance test. From the results, the spacer grid position is determined to be consistent with the design specifications within a 2.3% relative error. The induced fission neutron for four of the assemblies is also measured by scanning the neutron source, Cf-252 or the neutron detector. The exponential decay constants have been evaluated by the application of the Poisson regression to the net induced fission neutron counts. The measured keffs determined on the basis of the exponential decay constants of Cl5 appeared to be 0.541, 0.540, 0.597 and 0.556, respectively, which are comparable with 0.55195$\pm$0.00232 of the MCNP calculation.
