A numerical study is peformed to investigate the effect of circumferential velocity generated by the guide vane on the nozzle flow of a jet fan, s a way of increasing the penetration force of jet fan with nozzle of 175mm diameter. For the validation of numerical results. the velocity is measured by a 5-hole pitot tube and flow visualization is conducted by the tuft method. Under the inlet condition that the maximum circumferential velocity in the stator outlet of the present jet fan is 1.8m/s, the axial velocity in the nozzle outlet has the feature that the velocity at the axis is low and the velocity near the wall high. Therefore, to increase the throw length of the jet fan, the configuration of the fairing and nozzle needs to be developed and the precise revise of the stator angle is required, In addition, the bigger the circumferential velocity, the smaller the axial velocity at the axis and the bigger non-uniformity of the flow distribution.
Axial fan is used for the supplement of large amount of flows. Axial blowers show relatively high efficiency of the system. The present model of axial fan is for cooling a condenser in an air-conditioning unit that exhibits tendency toward compact size. In order to realize the compact model, the width of an axial blade should be cut down in axial distance. Main interest lies on the performance of the axial blowing system with blades having shorter chord length. One of the important design parameters for axial fan is the shape of the blades of it. Design of blades includes the cross-sectional shape and its dimension, including the chord length. We consider two types of blades; one is NACA airfoil with normal chord length and the other is with shortening chord length by $10\%$ of normal airfoil. Axial blower with the modified blades is essential for the compact model of an air-conditioner. The other design parameters are same in the two cases. Using a wind tunnel follows ASHRAE standards carries out evaluation of performance of the system. Detail of flows around the blades is prepared by velocity measurements using PIV. According to performance estimation, the axial blower with short chord blade show quite close to the performance results, including flow rate and pressure rise, of the standard one. The reason of the two similar results is that the flowpatterns depend on Reynolds number based on the chord length of a blade. In this investigation, the critical chord length is found, in which the flows near the airfoil are so unstable and the performance of the system is decreased. A series of figures is for the detail information on the flow.

In order to provide a complementary perspective to the effects of the maneuvering motions on the unsteady propeller performance, the numerical simulation of the flow field of the hull-rudder- propeller system is performed by Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Naiver-Stokes (URANS) method. Firstly, the flow fields around the submarine model without the presence of propeller in straight ahead motion and the steady diving maneuvers with submergence rudder deflections of 4°, 8° and 12° are predicted numerically. The non-uniformity characteristic of the nominal wake field is exacerbated with the increase submergence rudder angle. Then the flow field around the SUBOFF-G submarine fitted with the 4381 propeller is simulated. The axial, transverse and vertical unsteady propeller forces in different maneuvering conditions are compared. In general, as the submarine maneuvers more violently, the harmonic amplitudes of the unsteady force at the 2BPF and 3BPF increased more significantly than that at BPF.

In the effort on cost reduction in marine equipment company, the medium sized impeller blade ($500mm{\times}200mm{\times}20mm$) of an axial flow pan was manufactured by the high pressure die casting, with which was replaced the gravity die casting. High pressure die casting is a practical alternative because of some advantages such as excellent accuracy and smooth cast surface as well as cost reduction if a certain amount of porosity in the parts can be minimized. In order to reduce the porosity in the center of the neck which is thickest region of the impeller blade, the several gate designs were proposed in this work. The flow simulations for each gate design were performed and then the optimal design was determined by considering the air pressure distribution in neck section. Finally, the size of porosity in the neck of the die cast impeller blade for optimal design was less than 1mm, which satisfied the requirement.
As motor performance enhancement by improving electric design has reached its limit and downsizing issue has risen, the importance of thermal design is increasing. In this study, the flow and temperature distribution were reviewed with the help of CFD analysis and this result was compared with the experimental results. Furthermore, parametric analysis with thermal design structure showed that axial duct width but fan capacity is a critical factor to lower the hot spot temperature in electric motor.

Surface pressure integration and momentum method were respectively performed to evaluate the impeller thrust and the system thrust of a contra-rotating axial flow water jet propulsion, and an interesting phenomenon so-called thrust paradox was revealed. To explain the paradox, the impeller thrust and the system thrust were physically and theoretically analyzed, the results show that the impeller thrust is head involved and is determined by the hydraulic parameters upstream and downstream the impeller, while the momentum method depicted by a classic equation is valid simply under the best efficiency point. Consequently, the role of a water jet propulsion nozzle was deduced that the nozzle is mainly to limit the flow rate that crosses the impeller and to assure the system working under the best efficiency condition apart from its ability to produce momentum difference. Related mathematical formula expressed the nozzle diameter is the dominant variable used to calculate the working condition of the water jet propulsion. Therefore the nozzle diameter can be steadily estimated by the former expression. The system thrust scaling characteristics under various speeds were displayed lastly.
