  • The average grain size, the grain-size distribution, the morphology and the microstructure are fundamental characteristics of a spraying powder. Now that the significance of the grain size for the pattern of properties of the powder has been recognised, greater consideration is also being given to it in standards and regulations. However, unfortunately, the processes according to which the grain size and the grain-size distribution must be determined are specified in the rarest of cases. The contribution therefore dealt with the comparison of different particle-size measuring techniques, such as diffraction spectroscopy, sedimentation, sieving and microscopic measurement. The comparability of the measured results was investigated on twelve plasma spraying powders with different compositions, nominal sizes and morphologies.

  • Average particle deposition velocity toward a horizontal semiconductor wafer in vertical airflow is measured by a wafer surface scanner(PMS SAS-3600). Use of wafer surface scanner requires very short exposure time normally ranging from 10 to 30 minutes, and hence makes repetition of experiment much easier. Polystyrene latex (PSL) spheres of diameter between 0.2 and $1.0{\mu}m$ are used. The present range of particle sizes is very important in controlling particle deposition on a wafer surface in industrial applications. For the present experiment, convection, diffusion, and sedimentation comprise important agents for deposition mechanisms. To investigate confidence interval of experimental data, mean and standard deviation of average deposition velocities are obtained from more than ten data set for each PSL sphere size. It is found that the distribution of mean of average deposition velocities from the measurement agrees well with the predictions of Liu and Ahn(1987) and Emi et al.(1989).

  • Vacuum kinetic spray(VKS) is a relatively advanced process for fabricating thin/thick and dense ceramic coatings via submicron-sized particle impact at room temperature. However, unfortunately, the particle velocity, which is an important value for investigating the deposition mechanism, has not been clarified yet. Thus, in this research, VKS average particle velocities were derived by numerical analysis method(CFD: computational fluid dynamics) connected with an experimental approach(SCM: slit cell method). When the process gas or powder particles are accelerated by a compressive force generated by gas pressure in kinetic spraying, a tensile force generated by the vacuum in the VKS system accelerates the process gas. As a result, the gas is able to reach supersonic speed even though only 0.6MPa gas pressure is used in VKS. In addition, small size powders can be accelerated up to supersonic velocity by means of the drag-force of the low pressure process gas flow. Furthermore, in this process, the increase of gas flow makes the drag-force stronger and gas distribution more homogenized in the pipe, by which the total particle average velocity becomes higher and the difference between max. and min. particle velocity decreases. Consequently, the control of particle size and gas flow rate are important factors in making the velocity of particles high enough for successful deposition in the VKS system.

  • The sols prepared by dialyzing solutions, in which the hydrolyzed precipitates of TEOT or directly Ti(OC3H7)4 were resolved, were the nanoparticulate sol with the average particle size less than 7 nm and the anatase crystal phase. In the pH range of 1.5 to 2.9, the particle size of the nanoparticulate TiO2 sols (0.09 mol/ι) increased gradually upto 15 nm~26nm with the increase of pH in the initial aging state but the sols were transparent all the time, and stable without growin any more after 30 days. When the slipcasted porous alumina tubes were coated by the sol-gel dipping method, the minimum particle size and the aging time for forming the coated gel layer at the given pH were optimized. For obtaining the very thin crack-free and reproducible membrane coating, the use of a nanoparticulate TiO2 sol (0.09 mol/ι) aged for about 30 dyas at pH=2.0 was found to be the best.

  • Hydrophilic coating solutions were prepared by reacting a silane coupling agent, GPTMS (3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane) with colloidal silica. Hydrophilic coating films were also obtained by depositing the hydrophilic coating solutions on polycarbonate substrates by spin-coating and subsequently by thermal curing at $120^{\circ}C$. During this process, the effect of average particle sizes of colloidal silica was studied on the properties of coating films. As a result, coating film, prepared from colloidal silica with average particle size of 25 nm, showed a low contact angle of $20^{\circ}$ and a good pencil hardness of H. On the other hand, coating films, prepared from colloidal silica with average particle sizes of 15 nm and 45 nm, exhibited high contact angles of $27^{\circ}$ and $36^{\circ}$ and pencil hardness of H and B, respectively.

  • In this study, we have developed a real-time monitoring device for measuring $PM_{10/2.5/1}$ of ambient aerosol particles. The real-time PM (Particulate Matter) monitor was based on the light scattering method and had 16 channels in particle size. The laboratory and field tests were carried out to evaluate the performance of the PM monitor developed. Arizona Road Dust particles ranging from diameter of 0.1 to $20{\mu}m$ were generated as test particles in the laboratory test. The field test was carried out at the Seoul Meteorological Observatory. We can obtain the particle size and number concentration (particle size distribution) only from the real-time PM monitor developed. Therefore, the average density of aerosol particles was used to obtain the PM data from the particle size distribution. The $PM_{10/2.5/1}$ results of the PM monitor were compared with the data of the Grimm Dust Monitor (Model 1.108) and a beta ray gauge (Thermo Fisher Scientific). As a result, it was shown that the $PM_{10/2.5/1}$ results obtained by the real-time PM monitor agreed well with the data of the reference devices, and overall, the real-time PM monitor could be used as a PM monitoring device for real-time monitoring of the ambient particles.

  • In this study, nano-sized Ni-ferrite and $Fe_2$$O_3$+NiO powder was fabricated by spray pyrolysis process in the condition of 1kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ air pressure using the Fe-Ni complex waste acid solution generated during the manufacturing process of shadow mask. The average particle size of the produced powder was below 100 nm. The effects of the reaction temperature, the concentration of raw material solution and the nozzle tip size on the properties of powder were studied. As the reaction temperature increased from $800 ^{\circ}C$ to $1100^{\circ}C$, the average particle size of the powder increased from 40 nm to 100 nm, the structure of the powder gradually became solid, yet the distribution of the particle size appeared more irregular. Along with the increase of the reaction temperature, the fraction of the Ni-ferrite phase were also on the rise, and the surface area of the powder was greatly reduced. As the concentration of Fe in solution increased from 20g/l to 200g/l, the average particle size of the powder gradually increased from 30 nm to 60 nm, while the distribution of the particle size appeared more irregular. Along with the increase of the concentration of solution, tie fraction of the Ni-ferrite phase was on the rise, and the surface area of the powder was greatly reduced. Along with the increase of the nozzle tip size, the distribution of the particle size appeared more irregular, yet the average particle size of the powder showed no significant change. As the nozzle tip size increased from 1 mm to 2 mm, the fraction of the Ni-ferrite phase showed no significant change, while the surface area of the powder slightly reduced. As the nozzle tip size increased to 3 mm and 5 mm, the fraction of the Ni-ferrite phase gradually reduced, and the surface area of the powder slightly increased.

  • The aerosol number concentration have measured with an aerodynamic particle sizer spectrometer(APS) at Gosan site in Jeju, Korea, from March 2010 to March 2011. And then the atmospheric aerosol number concentration, the temporal variation and the size distribution of aerosol number concentration have been investigated. The aerosol number concentration varies significantly from 748 particles/$cm^3$ to zero particles/$cm^3$. The average number concentration in small size ranges are very higher than those in large size ranges. The number concentrations in the size range 0.25~0.28 ${\mu}m$, 0.40~0.45 ${\mu}m$ and 2.0~2.5 ${\mu}m$ are about 84 particles/$cm^3$, 2 particles/$cm^3$ and 0.4 particles/$cm^3$, respectively. The number concentrations in range of larger than 7.5 ${\mu}m$ are below 0.001 particles/$cm^3$. The seasonal variations in the number concentration for smaller particle(<1.0 ${\mu}m$) are not much, but the variations for larger particle are very evident. And strong amplitudes of diurnal variations of entire averaged aerosol number concentration are not observed. Size-fractioned aerosol number concentrations are dramatically decreased with increased particle size. The size-fractioned aerosol number concentrations in size range 0.8~4.0 ${\mu}m$ during nighttime are evidently higher than during daytime, but similar levels are appeared in other size range. The seasonal differences in the size-fractioned number concentrations for smaller size range(<0.7 ${\mu}m$) are not observed, however, the remarkable seasonal differences are observed for larger size than 0.7 ${\mu}m$.

  • Tobacco dust samples were collected for two times in primary and secondary process at 4 cigarette manufacturing factories(Shintanzin, Youngju, Wonju, Kwangju) and analyzed to evaluate usage as a raw material in production of reconstituted tobacco. The chemical constituents and HWS of tobacco dust were analyzed. Tobacco dust samples were partitioned by particle size using a series of screens ranging from 20 to 200 mesh. The amount of material retained in each fraction was quantified and sand content was also determined. Appreciable average amounts$(40-65\%)$ material at 4 locations were found to be larger than 60 mesh. Although the amount of material in each fraction increased to a maximum at 100 mesh and then decreased, the $\%$ sand continually increased with decreasing particle size. The chemical constituents and HWS content of tobacco dust have similar values in secondary process of 4 cigarette manufacturing factories but the those of primary process have different values according to the site of occurrence and manufacturing factories.

  • Nanoparticles of $Fe_2O_3$ with a mean particle size of 4-30 nm have been prepared by a pulsed wire evaporation method, and its structural and magnetic properties were studied by SQUID magnetometer and Mossbauer spectroscopy. From the main peak intensity of XRD and absorption rate of Mossbauer spectrum, the amounts of $\gamma-Fe_2O_3$ and $\alpha-Fe_2O_3$ in as-prepared sample are about 70% and 30%, respectively. The coercivity (53 Oe) and the saturation magnetization (14 emu/g) are about 20% of those of the bulk $\gamma-Fe_2O_3$. The low value of coercivity and saturation magnetization indicate that the $\gamma-Fe_2O_3$ phase nearly shows the spin glass-like behavior. Analysis of the set of Mossbauer spectrum indicates a distribution of magnetic hyperfine fields due to the particle size distribution yielding 20 nm of average particle size. The magnetic hyperfine parameters are consistent with values reported of bulk $\gamma-Fe_2O_3$ and $alpha-Fe_2O_3$. A quadrupole line on the center of spectrum represents of superparamagnetic phase of $\gamma-Fe_2O_3$ with a mean particle size of 7 nm or below.
