수분사법으로 제조된 순철 분말의 고압비틀림 성형 공정에 의한 치밀화 및 나노결정화 (Densification and Nanocrystallization of Water-Atomized Pure Iron Powder Using High Pressure Torsion)

  • In this study, powder metallurgy and severe plastic deformation by high-pressure torsion (HPT) approaches were combined to achieve both full density and grain refinement at the same time. Water-atomized pure iron powders were consolidated to disc-shaped samples at room temperature using HPT of 10 GPa up to 3 turns. The resulting microstructural size decreases with increasing strain and reaches a steady-state with nanocrystalline (down to ~250 nm in average grain size) structure. The water-atomized iron powders were deformed plastically as well as fully densified, as high as 99% of relative density by high pressure, resulting in effective grain size refinements and enhanced microhardness values.

  • Polycrystalline silicon(poly-Si) films are deposited on low temperature glass substrate by Hot-CVD(HWCVD). The structural properties of the poly-Si films are strongly dependent on the temperature$(T_w)$. The films deposited at high $T_w$ of $2000^{\circ}C$ have superior crystalline proper average lateral grain sizes are larger than $1{\mu}m$ and there are no vertical grain boundaries. The sur of the high $T_w$ samples are naturally textured like pyramid shape. These large grain size and text surface are believed to give high current density when applied to solar cells. However, the poly films are structurally porous and contains high defect density, by which high concentration of C and O resulted within the films by air-penetration after removed from chamber.

VC 및 Co함유 고속도공구강 분말의 볼밀링 및 소결거동 (Ball Milling and Sintering Behavior of High Speed Steel Powders Containing VC and Co)

  • Cobalt and VC powders were ball milled with M2 grade high speed steel powders under various ball to powder ratios. The powders milled under higher ball to powder ratio become finer, more irregular and have a broader size distribution, and thus possess a lower compressibility and a better sinterability regarding densification. Increasing the ball to powder ratio lowered the sintering temperature to obtain the density level necessary to isolate all the pores. Lowering the sintering temperature is very critical to maintain fine microstructure since grain and carbide coarsening are accelerated by higher sintering temperature due to more liquid phase formation. The powders obtained by ball milling at 20 to 1 ratio has the lowest compressibility but has the best sinterability, almost compatible to unmilled pure M2 powders. A sintered body over 97% theoretical density with fine microstructures having average grain size of ~10 microns was obtained from the powder by sintering at 1260 $^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in vacuum. XRD results indicate that two types of carbides are mainly present in the sintered structure, MC and $M_{6}C$ type. The MC type carbides are more or less round shaped and mainly located at the grain boundaries whereas the $M_{6}C$ type are angular shaped and mainly located inside the grains.

초기 등통로각압출 공정 횟수가 압출된 마그네슘 합금의 이방성에 미치는 영향 (Influence of initial ECAP passes on the anisotropic behavior of an extruded magnesium alloy)

  • In this paper, a transversely isotropic behavior of AZ31 Mg alloy produced by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) process was investigated through tensile test and microstructure observation. The effects of initial ECAP pass number on the anisotropic behavior and mechanical properties of the Mg alloy are evaluated after conventional direct extrusion test, which are carried out at a temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. As a result of the tensile test in three directions ($0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$ to the extrusion direction of the sheet) at room temperature, elongation of as-extruded AZ31 alloy(ECAP for 0 pass) showed an unusual anisotropic behavior depending on the extrusion direction although the yield strength and tensile strength are similar to the ECAPed AZ31 alloy. After ECAP for 4 passes at $200^{\circ}C$, microstructural observations of ECAPed magnesium alloy showed a significant grain refinement, which is leading to an equiaxed grain structure with average size of $2.5{\mu}m$. The microstructures of the extruded billet are observed by the use of an electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD) technique to evaluate of the influence on the grain refinement during extrusion process and re-crystallization mechanism of AZ31 Mg alloy.

고강도 Al-Zn기 다이캐스팅 합금개발에 관한 연구 I (A Study of the Development of a High-Strength Al-Zn Based Alloy for Die Casting I)

  • Al-Zn based alloys are the most common types of wrought Al alloys. Although Al-Zn alloys have high strength, they cannot be applied to a conventional casting process. In this study, Al-Zn-based alloys applicable to a die casting process were developed successfully. The developed Al-45 wt% Zn-based alloys showed a fine equiaxed grain structure and high strength. A fine equiaxed grain having an average size of $25{\mu}m$ was obtained by the die casting process. The UTS and elongation of the new alloy are 475 MPa and ~3.5%, respectively. In addition, we elucidate the effect of a Zn addition on variations in different mechanical properties and the microstructure characteristics of (Al96.3-xZnxCu3Si0.4Fe0.3) x=20, 30, 40, and 45 wt% alloys fabricated by a die casting process.

마찰접합 된 STK400 Tube의 미세조직과 기계적 특성 평가 (Evaluation of the Microstructures and Mechanical Properties on Friction Welded STK400 Tube)

  • We evaluate the properties of friction welded STK400 steel tube in terms of the relationship between microstructures and mechanical properties. Friction welding is conducted at a rotation speed of 1,600 rpm and upset time of 3-7 sec for different thicknesses of STK 400 tubes. To analyse the grain boundary characteristic distributions(GBCDs) in the welded zone, electron backscattering diffraction(EBSD) method is introduced. The results show that a decrease in welding time (3 sec.) creates a notable increase grain refinement so that the average grain size decreases from $15.1{\mu}m$ in the base material to $4.5{\mu}m$ in the welded zone. These refined grains achieve significantly enhanced microhardness and a slightly higher yield and higher tensile strengths than those of the base material. In particular, all the tensile tested specimens experience a fracture aspect at the base material zone but not at the welded zone, which means a soundly welded state for all conditions.

Three-dimensional Computational Modeling and Simulation of Intergranular Corrosion Propagation of Stainless Steel

  • In oxidizing nitric acid solutions, stainless steel undergoes intergranular corrosion accompanied by grain dropping and changes in the corrosion rate. For the safe operation of reprocessing plants, this mechanism should be understood. In this study, we constructed a three-dimensional computational model using a cellular automata method to simulate the intergranular corrosion propagation of stainless steel. The computational model was constructed of three types of cells: grain (bulk), grain boundary (GB), and solution cells. Model simulations verified the relationship between surface roughness during corrosion and dispersion of the dissolution rate of the GB. The relationship was investigated by simulation applying a constant dissolution rate and a distributed dissolution rate of the GB cells. The distribution of the dissolution rate of the GB cells was derived from the intergranular corrosion depth obtained by corrosion tests. The constant dissolution rate of the GB was derived from the average dissolution rate. Surface roughness calculated by the distributed dissolution rates of the GBs of the model was greater than the constant dissolution rates of the GBs. The cross-sectional images obtained were comparable to the corrosion test results. These results indicate that the surface roughness during corrosion is associated with the distribution of the corrosion rate.

AZ61 마그네슘 압출재의 압출 온도에 따른 기계적 특성 및 고주기 피로 특성 (Effect of Extrusion Temperature on Mechanical Properties and High-cycle Fatigue Properties of Extruded AZ61 Alloy)

  • In this study, a commercial AZ61 magnesium alloy is extruded at 300 ℃ and 400 ℃ and the microstructures, mechanical properties, and high-cycle fatigue properties of the extruded materials are investigated. Both extruded materials have a fully recrystallized microstructure with no Mg17Al12 precipitates. The average grain size and maximum basal texture intensity of the extruded material increase with increasing extrusion temperature. The material extruded at 400 ℃ (AZ61-400) has higher tensile yield strength and lower compressive yield strength than the material extruded at 300 ℃ (AZ61-300) because of the stronger basal texture of the former. Because of coarser grain size, the tensile elongation of AZ61-400 is lower than that of AZ61-300. Despite the differences in microstructures and tensile/compressive properties, the two extruded materials have the same fatigue strength of 110 MPa. This is because the finer grain size of AZ61-300 causes an increase in fatigue strength, but its weaker texture causes a decrease in fatigue strength. In both extruded materials, fatigue cracks initiate at the surface of fatigue specimens at all stress amplitudes tested.

Localized Corrosion Resistance and Microstructural Changes in UNS N07718 Alloy After Solution Heat Treatment

  • The localized corrosion resistance of UNS N07718 alloy was investigated after solution heat treatment. When the alloy was heat-treated at 1050 ℃ for 2.5 hours, it experienced an increase in average grain diameter, a reduction in grain boundary area, and the dissolution of delta phases along grain boundaries. Additionally, primary metallic nitrides (MN) and metallic carbides (MC), enriched with either Ti or Nb, were identified and exhibited a random distribution within the microstructures. Despite the solution heat treatment, the composition, diameter, and abundance of MNs and MCs remained relatively consistent. The critical pitting temperature (CPT), as determined by the ASTM G48-C immersion test, revealed similar values of 45 ℃ for both treated and untreated alloys. However, a decrease in maximum pit depth and corrosion rate was observed after the solution heat treatment. The microstructural changes that occurred during the heat treatment and their potential implications were discussed to understand the influence of the solution heat treatment.

평균입자 연삭모델에 의한 최대미변형칩두께의 예측 (Estimation of the Maximum Undeformed Chip Thickness Using the Average Grain Model)

  • In order to estimate the maximum undeformed chip thickness in grinding operation, it is necessary to obtain the successive cutting point spacing. In the past it was obtained by experiments. In this paper, the average successive cutting point spacing has been obtained using the given grinding input conditions and it is possible to estimate the maximum undeformed chip thickness without using any experimentally obtained data. The validity of the proposed analysis has been verified based on two sets of grinding scratch tests using WA and CBN grinding wheels.
