We report on some of the preliminary results of the physiological responses resulting from vehicular speed changes. Healthy human subjects (n=5) were studied for the experiments. We measured the physiological responses of the subjects such as Heart Rate Variability (HRV), Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), and skin temperature for day and night vehicular speed change experiments, respectively. Before and after the tasks, we carried out a self-report for acquiring correlation with experiment results. Mean heart rate variability (HRV) and amplitude of GSR and skin temperature were calculated for 3 minutes duration in each state. The analysis of the physiological measures of ANS activity revealed that vehicle speed change-based affective state evoked arousal response pattern featured by HR acceleration, decrease of skin temperature, and increase of GSR amplitude. The obtained results show that despite some differences observed between each state, overall physiological responses show that the activity of the sympathetic nervous system increases as a result of the increase of speed.
Objectives: Although the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is thought to play an important role in treatment of obesity, no study has been conducted to investigate acupuncture's effects on this aspect of the ANS. This study aimed to describe the effects of acupuncture in the ANS by means of heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. Methods: A total of 46 obese women aged from 21 to 54 with body mass index ranging from 25.1 to $39.3kg/m^2$ were recruited and randomized into both the real acupuncture group (n=23) and sham acupuncture group (n=23). A total of 3 instances of HRV analysis were conducted before, during, and after treatment. Statistically significant differences between time and groups were analyzed using repeated measure analysis of variance. Results: All parameters of time domain analysis and frequency domain analysis except for the square root of the mean squared differences of successive normal sinus intervals (RMSSD) and very low frequency (VLF) showed significant differences between times. The mean of all R-R intervals (mean RR) showed significant level of interaction between time and group. Between groups, time domain analysis of standard deviation of the normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN), RMSSD and frequency domain analysis of total power (TP) and high frequency (HF) showed significant differences. Conclusions: The real acupuncture group showed deactivation of parasympathetic function and relative increase of sympathetic activity in obese subjects. Further studies are necessary to uncover the mechanisms of acupuncture in obesity treatment.

This study is aimed at investigating drivers' reactions to yellow signal dilemma situations as a result of the existing signal system, and developing a new signal system. A driver-centered coping model was developed through bio-signal analysis. The driver's physiological response in the existing signal system was observed, and the signal system was developed by applying intersection road driving conditions using a car graphic simulator. Participants were classified into a control group (existing signal system) and an experimental group for a new yellow signal system (new signal system). Based on the results, the emergence of parasympathetic nerves was higher in the experimental group than in the control group, where a statistically significant difference was observed (p < 0.05). The newly developed signal system appeared to cause tension among drivers; however, the sympathetic to parasympathetic nerve ratio was 6: 4, which could be interpreted as an ideal balance. We conclude that drivers can drive more stably if the coping signal system developed in this study is applied to the traffic system.
Purpose: The aim of the study was to compare the characteristics of the autonomic innervation of the heart in polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS) patients with regulary cycling controls. Methods: We studied 21 patients visiting $\bigcirc\bigcirc$hospital from 25th June 2009 to 25th June 2010. The subjects were categorized in two groups, 11 PCOS patients and 10 healthy regularly cycling controls. We studied the difference of Heart rate variability (HRV) between two groups by Independent samples T-test using SPSS for windows(version 17.0). Results: The Standard deviation of all normal R-R intervals (SDNN), The spuare root of the sum of the spuare of difference between adjacent normal R-R intervals (RMS-SD) of PCOS group was non-significantly lower than non-PCOS group. High frequency power (HF) and Normalized high frequency power (HF norm) of PCOS group was significantly higher than non-PCOS group. Normalized low frequency power (LF norm) of PCOS was signficantly lower than non-PCOS group. The results means increased sympathetic and decreased vagal modulation. Total power (TP), Very low frequency power (VLF) of PCOS group was non-significantly lower than non-PCOS group. Low frequency power (LF), LF/HF ratio of PCOS group was non-significantly higher than non-PCOS group. Conclusion: The results suggest that PCOS can be related to decreased activity of parasympathetic nervous system.

Objectives : This study was conducted to assess effects of oriental medicine music therapy on heart rate variability(HRV) in normal subjects under mental stress. Methods : 34 healthy volunteers(control group:17, experimental group:17) participate in this study. The volunteers were randomly allocated into two groups. After 10-minutes rest period and instrumentation, both groups performed a mental stress test for 12-minutes. HRV was recorded before and after the mental stress. And then the experimental group applied oriental medicine music therapy for 10-minutes. In the control group, they rested for 10-minutes. And HRV was recorded. Results : After giving mental stress stimulation to both groups, LF and LF/HF ratio were significantly increased and HF, mean HRV were decreased. In experimental group, LF, LF/HF ratio were significantly decreased and HF, SDNN were significantly increased after applying oriental medicine music therapy. In control group, LF was significantly decreased. And LF/HF ratio was decreased and HF, SDNN were increased, but it was not significant. Conclusions : This results show that oriental medicine music therapy could be relatively useful to decrease sympathetic activity and prevent the alteration of autonomic nervous system due to mental stress.
Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate Heart Rate Variability (HRV) characteristics of patients with primary dysmenorrhea at the menstrual phase. Methods: 7 databases (Pubmed, Cochrane library, CNKI, RISS, KISS, OASIS, ScienceON) were searched for eligible studies published before 2021 December. The studies comparing HRV between patients with primary dysmenorrhea and controls were included. A random-effects model was used to evaluate differences of HRV parameters between patients with primary dysmenorrhea and controls. Results: 4 articles were included in this review based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. SDNN (Standard deviation of NN intervals), RMSSD (Square root of the mean squared difference of successive NN intervals), mean PR (Mean of pulse rate), LF (Low frequency), HF (High frequency), was the most frequently used as HRV parameters. RMSSD was significantly lower in patients with primary dysmenorrhea than controls. There was no statistically significant difference of other HRV parameters between patients with primary dysmenorrhea and controls. Conclusions: This study suggests that parasympathetic activity and overall functions of autonomic nervous system might be decreased in patients with primary dysmenorrhea at the menstrual phase. In the future, well-designed clinical studies using HRV and additional meta-analysis should be conducted to obtain a wealth of information about HRV characteristics of patients with primary dysmenorrhea.

We tested the feasibility of automated discrimination of patients with panic disorder (PD) from healthy controls (HCs) based on multimodal physiological responses using machine learning. Electrocardiogram (ECG), electrodermal activity (EDA), respiration (RESP), and peripheral temperature (PT) of the participants were measured during three experimental phases: rest, stress, and recovery. Eleven physiological features were extracted from each phase and used as input data. Logistic regression (LoR), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and multilayer perceptron (MLP) algorithms were implemented with nested cross-validation. Linear regression analysis showed that ECG and PT features obtained in the stress and recovery phases were significant predictors of PD. We achieved the highest accuracy (75.61%) with MLP using all 33 features. With the exception of MLP, applying the significant predictors led to a higher accuracy than using 24 ECG features. These results suggest that combining multimodal physiological signals measured during various states of autonomic arousal has the potential to differentiate patients with PD from HCs.
The This study aims to verify the causal relationship among physically disability persons participation in exercise, heart rate variance, and facial expression recognition. To achieve such research goal, this study targeted 139 physically disability persons and as for sampling, purposive sampling method was applied. After visiting a sporting stadium and club facilities that sporting events were held and explaining the purpose of the research in detail, only with those who agreed to participate in the research, their heart rate variance and facial emotion awareness were measured. With the results of measurement, mean value, standard deviation, correlation analysis, and structural equating model were analyzed, and the results are as follows. The quantity of exercise positively affected sympathetic activity and parasympathetic activity of autonomic nervous system. Exercise history of physically disability persons was found to have a positive influence on LF/HF, and it had a negative influence on parasympathetic activity. Sympathetic activity of physically disability persons turned out to have a positive effect on the recognition of the emotion, happiness, while the quantity of exercise had a negative influence on the recognition of the emotion, sadness. These findings were discussed and how those mechanisms that are relevant to the autonomic nervous system, facial expression recognition of physical disability persons.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of mental stress stimulation and acupucnture applied at HT7 point on heart rate variability (HRV) in normal subjects. Methods : Thirty seven healthy volunteers participated in this study. The volunteers were randomly allocated into two groups. Both groups performed a mental arithmetic stress test and stroop color-word test for 10 minute. Then, acupuncture needles were inserted on HT7 for the study group and on non-acupucnture point for the control group. HRV was recorded three times at test time and before and after acupuncture stimulation. Results : After giving mental stress stimulation to both groups, LF and LF!HF ratio were increased and HF was decreased significantly. After giving acupuncture to study group, LF and LF/HF ratio were decreased and HF was increased, but it was not significant. After giving acupuncture to control group, LF and LF/HF ratio were increased and HF was decreased, but it was not significant. Conclusions : This results show that mental arithmetic stress test and stroop color-word test contribute to activation of the sympathetic nervous system Acupuncture at HT7 could be relatively useful to decrease sympathetic activity and balance autonomic nervous system for those who are under stress.

This study aims to show the change of Heart Rate Variability(HRV) and Pulse wave velocity(PWV) on menstruation in women at college. Heart Rate Variability(HRV) and Pulse wave velocity(PWV) of 122 women at college were measured at their menstruation and ordinary period. SDNN, RMSSD, SDSD, HRV Index(%), stress resistance and cardiac activity were significantly higher at their menstruation than ordinary period, but Total Power and pNN50(%) were opposite. The automatic nervous system balance and physical stress were decreased in groups without dysmenorrhea than with one. PWV(E-R) and PWV(E-L) were much higher at menstruation than ordinary period. PTT(F-R) and PTT(F-L) were decreased in groups without dysmenorrhea than with severe one. We demonstrated that menstruation can effect on Heart Rate Variability and Pulse wave velocity and dysmenorrhea can cause the imbalance of autonomic nervous system.
