국내 경유자동차 배출물 규제동향 (Trend of exhaust emission control of diesel engine vehicles in Korea)

  • This short report describes the trend of exhaust emission control of the diesel engine vehicles in Korea, which originally was motivated from the newly proposed Emission Control Regulation of Diesel Engine Vehicles possible to be activated in 1991 by Korean Environmental Protection Agency. This short survey report has been prepared by the special working group of The Korea Society of Automotive Engineers (KSAE) on this particular subject. This report includes (1) estimation of portions of contribution of diesel engine vehicle emission to total air pollution, (2) comparison of proposals of new articles/regulations/laws in Korea with those of other selected countries such as USA, European countries, and Japan, (3) comparison of vehical emission control regulations in Korea with those in other selected countries, (4) technical aspects of possibilities of reduction of diesel engine vehicle emissions, (5) additional administrational aspects of technology development program, (6) social impact resulted from the severe emission control regulation on diesel engine vehicles, and (7) proposals, prepared by the special working group of the KSAE, on the emission control regulation of diesel engine vehicles, which can possibly bring better cleaner air released from the air pollution resulted from diesel engine exhaust emissions in real sense with minimal financial contribution, with optimal technological efforts, with less social impacts, within five to ten year period.

  • This paper describes an investigation of the performance and emission characteristics of a commercial cylinder direct injection diesel engine operating on natural gas with pilot diesel ignition. Engine tests for variations in the pilot injection timing were performed at an engine speed of 1500 rpm. This study showed that the performance of the dual-fuel diesel engine increased as the engine load increased and as the pilot diesel injection timing angle advanced. The peaks of cylinder pressure, pressure rise rate, and heat release rate all increased while the fuel ignition timing advanced with the pilot injection timing. The engine operation was stable, and the least smoke was produced at a pilot injection timing of $12^{\circ}$ before top dead center. NOx emissions were only exhausted under high-load conditions, and they increased as the pilot injection timing angle advanced.

  • This paper presents dynamic clearance verification considering engine movement for vehicle engine room package and validates through physical vehicle test. Traditionally, static clearance guide has been used for engine room package, but it's only 2-dimension criteria that results in requiring unnecessary space and it's not possible to conduct engine movement with real driving conditions. Thus, the dynamic DMU considers engine movement based on 28 load cases that are Roll Data analyzed by CAE for maximum engine movement and visualizes part-to-part dynamic clearance into virtual space. The dynamic DMU enables to develop compact engine room package without unnecessary space. The result of comparison between simulation and physical test has 0.892 correlation coefficient.

ANALYSIS OF IN-CYLINDER FUEL-AIR MIXTURE DISTRIBUTION IN A HEAVY DUTY CNG ENGINE

  • Distribution of fuel-air mixture has a strong influence on performance and emissions of a compressed natural gas (CNG) engine. In this paper, parametric study is performed by KIVA-3V to investigate fuel-air mixture with respect to injection timing, cycle equivalence ratio and engine speed. With open-valve injection intensive mixing during intake and compression stroke results in relatively homogeneous mixture in the cylinder. Sequential induction of fuel-air mixture and fresh air results in stratification in the cylinder among the test cases at closed-valve injection. There is close similarity in the calculated distributions of the mixture in the cylinder with different cycle equivalence ratios and engine speeds. The results are compared against pressure traces and flame images obtained in a single cylinder engine converted from a 11L six-cylinder heavy duty diesel engine.

엔진 마운트계의 최적설계에 관한 연구 (A Study on an Optimal Design of Engine Mount System)

  • The major effective factors on the ride quality of a vehicle are the vibration and noise of the engine and drive system. Engine contributes about 80% of the vibration and noise in the vehicle, and exciting forces of the engine are transmitted onto the vehicle frame through the engine mount. This paper studies the vibration reduction of a vehicle through the improvement of the engine mount. A computer program for optimal design is developed and the engine mount conditions are optimized to reduce the WRMS of PSD of acceleration at the driver's seat, which are caused by the exciting forces at the idle speed. Design variables are selected as the stiffness, mount angle and the location of the engine mount rubber. It is shown through computer simulation that the PSD of acceleration at the driver's seat can be improved by redesigning the engine mount system.

유전알고리즘을 이용한 대형 디젤 엔진 운전 조건 최적화 (Optimization of Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Operating Parameters Using Micro-Genetic Algorithms)

  • In this paper, optimized operating parameters were found using multi-dimensional engine simulation software (KIVA-3V) and micro-genetic algorithm for heavy duty diesel engine. The engine operating condition considered was at 1,737 rev/min and 57 % load. Engine simulation model was validated using an engine equipped with a high pressure electronic unit injector (HEUI) system. Three important parameters were used for the optimization - boost pressure, EGR rate and start of injection timing. Numerical optimization identified HCCI-like combustion characteristics showing significant improvements for the soot and $NO_X$ emissions. The optimized soot and $NO_X$ emissions were reduced to 0.005 g/kW-hr and 1.33 g/kW-hr, respectively. Moreover, the optimum results met EPA 2007 mandates at the operating point considered.

  • As fundamental step to find the suitable compression ratio of hydrogen fueled engine, performance and combustion characteristics of that engine were analyzed. Qualitative characteristics of the hydrogen fueled engine were similar to that of the gasoline engine, and it was also found that knock limit compression ratio of the hydrogen fueled engine was higher than that of the gasoline engine.

  • Ion current in an S.I engine cylinder is measured with the spark plug as a probe. The peak values are confirmed to show a fair correlation with local air-fuel ration and engine speed which implies that the ion current measured at the spark plug may provide a signal for the local mixture strength which is the key parameter in precise fuel control for future engines especially of gasoline direct-injected lean burn engines.

  • Using single-zone heat release model and quasi-steady model, computer program for calculating the compression ignition engine cycle was composed. The properties in the cylinder were calculated in terms of crank angle and the effects of various operating conditions on rate of heat release and on engine performance were studied. The predicted values for the engine under consideration have shown good agreement with published data.

  • The analytical model of an engine mount system with six degrees of freedom is identified using the modal parameters obtained from the experimental modal analysis. The structural parameters, mass moment of inertia of the engine block and stiffness of the rubber mounts, of the engine mount system are determined by using the condition that the estimated model parameters should satisfy the corresponding eigenvalue problem. The simulated modal parameters of the identified analytical model are in good agreement with the measured modal parameters.
