  • The development of an aluminum bumper is required in order to reduce the weight of the automobile. An porthole die extrusion process is simulated by the finite element method in order to develop the aluminum bumper which is manufactured by hollow section extrusion. The general-purpose finite element analysis software is used. The developed analysis method can be applied to the optimization of the porthole die extrusion process for the aluminum bumper.

  • Today, the industries use polymer material for many purpose. Specially, it is important in automobile industry because tile costs of polymer hold high proportion of the overall cost. If we reduce the weight of automobile, fuel efficiency of car is raised and cost of bumper is lower. Therefore there are many efforts to reduce of car currently. The purpose of this paper is to reduce polymer used in car bumper.

  • Injection molding process is one of the processes that can mold plastic product as low cost. However, manufacturing process of automobile bumper mold has lots of trial and error. Especially, desiging of a huge mold such as bumper mold is needed to establish a design standard for runner system. In this study, CAE was conducted to observe the variation of melt-flow by changing runner and gate type in automobile bumper mold as preceding study for a standard design of runner system.

  • Increasing the fuel economy has been an inevitable issue for the development of new cars, and one of the important measures to improve the fuel economy is to decrease the vehicle weight. In order to obtain this goal, the researches about lighter, stronger and the well impact absorbing bumper impact beam have been studied without sacrificing bumper safety. In this study, the overall weight reduction possibility of rear bumper impact beam could be examined based on the variation of frontal, offset and corner impact crash capability by substituting a ultra high strength steel material (boron steel ) having tensile strength of 1.5 GPa grade instead of conventional steels. In addition, the section variations (open section, closed section, open section with 5 stays) of the bumper impact beam structure were examined carefully. It could be reached that this analysis could be well established and be contributed for design guide and the optimum design conditions of the automotive rear bumper impact beam development.

  • Although the numbers of pedestrian fatalities and injuries are steadily declining worldwide, pedestrian protection is still an important issue. Extensive researches have been carried out in the field of pedestrian protection in order to establish pedestrian safety regulations. The automobile hoods and bumpers, which pedestrians frequently run into during accidents, should be safely designed for pedestrians. Two analysis methods are utilized to design safe structures of the hood and the bumper. They are real experiment and computer simulation. In this research, a method is developed to simultaneously utilize the results from the experiment and the simulation. For design, orthogonal arrays are employed to combine the two methods. Based on this method, a hood and a bumper are designed to protect pedestrians.

  • In this paper, weldability and formability of Tailored-Blank (TB) and the structural impact testing of bump beam were investigated to apply TB to automobile bumper beam. The optimal $CO_2$ laser welding condition for TB of SPFC and SPRC steel plates with different thicknesses was obtained. Before welding, the cross section of butt joint was prepared only by shearing without milling process. Real type bump beam was produced by two kind of forming processes such as roll-forming and press-forming, and the good formability of TB was obtained. Impact test results of bump by using pendulum and barrier were satisfied the impact regulation of bump. Finally. It may be confirmed that laser welded TB is well-balanced material in both weight reduction and production cost of automobile bump.

  • It is a frequent occurrence in urban traffic - a low-speed collision in which one vehicle hits the back of another. The vehicles often sustain expensive damage. Bumpers can reduce this damage, but only line up so the initial contact in an impact is bumper to bumper. Then the bumpers on the colliding vehicles have to absorb the crash energy, keeping damage away from expensive sheet metal, lights, and other components. In real world accidents, Bumper mismatches in crashes are increasing, and the resulting repair costs from low-speed collisions are escalating. In this study, we investigated the bumper rail height and analyzed their effects on repair cost. Futhermore, Our 16kph front-into-rear crash tests demonstrates bumper mismatch problem.

  • The CO$_2$ laser beam irradiation strengthening of 35kgf/mm$_2$ grade steel sheet is investigated to reduce the weight of bumper beam. The increase of tensile strength is dominated by the number of fully penetrated melting lines. The optimal laser irradiation pattern is obtained by 3-point bending test of hat-type specimens. Laser should be irradiated not only on the center specimen densely in the width direction, but also on the edge densely in the longitudinal direction. Local laser strengthening may be effective for the weight reduction of automobile bumper beam.

  • The car crash accidents in low speed occurs most frequently. Damage on a conventional bumper after the car accident causes the bumper to get fixed most of time. This study shows how a gas tube bumper reduces a damageability and increase repairability after the car accidents. The 15 km/h 40% offset front and rear crash test recommended by RCAR (Research council for automobile repairs) standard was performed and evaluated damages on the gas tube bumper by the pendulum impact tester. In this study, the gas tube bumper reduces damageability and increases repairability after car crash accidents. In addition, car frame design to apply the gas tube bumper may consider to be changed.
