Relationship among Nurses' Communication Style, Nursing Service Satisfaction, Hospital Service Satisfaction Perceived by Patients' Family and Intent to Revisit the Hospital (환자가족이 지각하는 간호사의 의사소통 스타일, 간호서비스 만족, 병원서비스 만족과 병원 재이용 의도 관계연구)

  • Purpose: This research aimed at investigating the relationship among nurses' communication style, nursing service satisfaction, hospital service satisfaction, and intent to revisit the hospital. Methods: A correlational study was conducted including 270 family members of patients who were hospitalized in general wards in a general hospital in J city. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 21.0. Results: Affective communication style demonstrated the highest correlation with intent to revisit the hospital, followed by informative communication style, and authoritative communication style. Nursing service satisfaction demonstrated indirect effect through the parameter, hospital service satisfaction to the intent to revisit the hospital. Hospital service satisfaction demonstrated direct effect influencing the intent to revisit the hospital. Conclusion: With respect to nursing service, affective communication style is important to promote intent to revisit the hospital. It is necessary to improve nursing service, since it is an important variable that can improve hospital service satisfaction and hospital revisit intent.

The effects of nurses' communication styles, nurse-mother partnerships, and mothers' anxiety on coping of hospitalized children's mothers (아동병동 환아 어머니가 인지한 간호사의 의사소통유형과 간호사와의 파트너십, 불안이 대처에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This descriptive study aimed to identify the contribution of nurses' communication styles, nurse-mother partnerships, and mothers' anxiety levels to the coping of mothers of hospitalized children, with the goal of establishing effective intervention strategies based on these factors. Methods: Data were collected using a structured questionnaire from July 12 to October 29, 2018. The study's participants were 200 hospitalized children's mothers in the pediatric ward of a university hospital. Results: The coping of hospitalized children's mothers showed a significant relationship with nurses' informative communication style (r=.26, p<.001), affective communication style (r=.28, p<.001), nurse-mother partnership (r=.50, p<.001), authoritative communication style (r=-.28, p<.001), and mothers' anxiety (r=-.23, p=.001). A multiple regression analysis (adjusted R2=.32) indicated that the factors affecting the mothers' coping included nurse-mother partnership (𝛽=.47, p<.001), another caregiver (yes) (𝛽=.17, p=.006), and mothers' subjective health status (very healthy) (𝛽=.15, p=.047). Conclusion: Considering that the formation of cooperative partnerships between mothers and nurses found in this study had a positive effect on the mothers' coping skills, it appears necessary to develop and implement programs for improving nurses' communication skills and ability to form partnerships, beginning from undergraduate education.

A Study on the Effect of Public Library Managers' Communication Styles on Employees' Empowerment, Job Satisfaction, and Life Satisfaction (공공도서관 관리자 커뮤니케이션 유형이 직원의 임파워먼트, 직무만족, 생활만족에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, a research model was designed and verified in order to determine whether the communication styles of public library managers affect employees' empowerment, job satisfaction, and life satisfaction. A survey was conducted among employees of four public libraries in the Gyeonggi region and 24 libraries in Seoul, and 229 valid responses were analyzed. The analysis revealed that authoritative communication style influenced employees' job satisfaction, while social communication style influenced their empowerment. Additionally, employees' empowerment impacted their job satisfaction, which in turn affected their life satisfaction. This implies that job satisfaction and life satisfaction of the employees can be achieved after communication and empowerment were well established within the organization. This study is meaningful in suggesting an effective management direction for strengthening the essence and foundation of public libraries by examining the theoretical significance and implications of the research result. This study also suggested that in the future, another research should be conducted based on a variety of characteristics by integrating the different communication styles of researchers.

Communication Type, Emotional Labor, and Job Stress of Nurses in Small and Medium-sized Hospitals (중소병원 간호사의 의사소통 유형과 감정노동 및 직무스트레스)

  • This is a descriptive research study to confirm the relationship between communication types, emotional labor, and job stress of nurses in small and medium-sized hospitals and to identify factors affecting job stress. The study was conducted on 192 nurses randomly selected from small and medium-sized hospitals located in G Metropolitan City. A structured questionnaire was used as a research tool for measuring communication types, emotional labor, and job stress, and the data were collected from August 20 to September 10, 2019. The results of the study are as follows. The subject's communication type averaged 3.55±0.31 points, emotional labor 3.21±0.59 points, and job stress 3.44±0.52 points. Job stress showed a statistically significant negative correlation with friendly communication among the types of communication, and a statistically significant positive correlation with emotional labor. Factors affecting job stress included gender, total clinical experience, and emotional labor, showing an explanatory power of 28.0%. It is considered that an efficient management strategy for emotional labor is needed to reduce the job stress of nurses in the future.

The Relationship between Parental Stress and Nurses' Communication as Perceived by Parents of High-risk Newborns (고위험 신생아 부모가 지각한 간호사의 의사소통과 부모 스트레스와의 관계)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to characterize the relationship between parental stress and nurses' communication as perceived by parents of high-risk newborns in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Methods: The participants were 54 parents of high-risk newborns in a NICU. Data were collected from January to March 2018. Parental stress and parents' perceptions of nurses' communication ability and styles were measured using a questionnaire. Results: The average scores for parental stress and nurses' communication ability were 3.39 and 4.38 respectively, on a 5-point scale. Parents most commonly reported that nurses showed a friendly communication style, followed by informative and authoritative styles. Mothers and fathers reported significantly different levels of parental stress. Parental stress showed a negative correlation with nurses' perceived verbal communication ability. Higher scores for nurses' verbal communication ability and for friendly and informative communication styles were associated with lower parental stress induced by the environment, the baby's appearance and behaviors, and treatments in the NICU. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that nurses need to offer proper information for parents and to support parents by encouraging them to express their emotions of stress and by providing parents with therapeutic communication and opportunities to participate in care.

Effect of Perceived Nurse's Communication Style on Admitted Children Mother's Stress and Coping (지각된 간호사의 의사소통 스타일이 입원 환아 어머니의 스트레스 및 대처노력에 미치는 영향)

  • The basic data will be provided for increasing the coping efforts and for decreasing the improvement of nursing services and stress in mothers of hospitalized child by examining the effects of the nurse's communication styles on the stress and coping efforts in mothers of hospitalized child. This study is the correlation research, and the data collection was conducted from September 2013 until December, and it was based on 196 mothers of hospitalized child in the pediatrics ward of E hospital in D city 196. The data collected was analyzed by the frequency, percentage average, standard deviation, Pearson correlation coefficient, regression analysis method. As the result of the study, about the effects of the nurse's perceived communication styles on the stress and coping efforts in mothers of hospitalized child, the nurse's non-authoritative communication style had the biggest effects on the stress, and the explanation power of those variables was 30.1%. In conclusion, in order to decrease the stress in mothers of hospitalized child and to enhance coping efforts, the nurses should sublate the authoritarian attitude and they should show the communication skills of friendly attitude and communication skills of the informative attitude. These communication skills are needed to be maintained and enhanced continually through the systematic communication enhancement program.
