  • The hornless Australian burrowing mayfly genus Ulmerophlebia Demoulin (Leptophlebiidae) is revised based on comprehensive examinations of adult and larval material collected throughout Australia. Two new species [Ulmerophlebia deani n. sp. and U. minuta n. sp.] and three named species [U. annulata (Harker), U. mjobergi (Ulmer) and U. pipinna Suter] are included. The larva of U. deani can be distinguished by the moderately developed apicomedial expansion of gills and W-shaped markings on the abdominal terga. The male adult of U. minuta can be easily distinguished by the greatly reduced penes. Descriptions, diagnoses, line-drawings of key characters, material and distributional data, taxonomic remarks and adult and larval keys are provided.

  • The traditional methods for determining the quality of milk, cheese and meat are tedious and expensive, with a significant wastage of chemicals which pollute the environment. To overcome these disadvantages, the potential of near infrared spectrophotometry (NIR) for monitoring the quality of milk and meat has been evaluated by a number of researchers. While most studies indicate that NIR can be used to predict chemical composition of milk and meat, and to monitor the cutting-point during cheese manufacturing, one study demonstrated the potential of NIR to predict sensory characteristics (e.g. hardness and tenderness) of beef. These calibrations were developed on a small number of samples, limiting their value for adoption by the industries. Now that the sophisticated computer software is available, more robust calibrations need to be developed to monitor both chemical and physical characteristics of meat and meat products simultaneously.

  • The model cavity scramjet engine experiments are carried out using T3 free-piston shock tunnel. Upstream hydrogen fuel is injected before the cavity with different injection pressure. OH planar laser-induced fluorescence is used to investigate the combustion zone and piezoelectric pressure transducers are used to define the pressure rise due to the combustion. Main combustion region is a mixing layer which is between air and fuel. Also high OH fluorescence signal is appeared in the shear layer above the cavity in high equivalence ratio. From the OH signal in the cavity, this fuel injection system can be a role as a flame- holder.

  • The study reported here is the Australian component of an international research project which seeks to identify student-reported convictions co-valued by them and their teachers during moments of effective mathematics learning. The 2 teachers and their 12 students in the 2 primary school classes associated effective moments of learning with 13 different values. No gender difference was apparent. Although the teachers planned their lessons together and were teaching similar topics, there were differences in what were co-valued. Of the 13 values, examples, sharing, resources, and multi modal representations were found to be commonly valued by students across the 'ability' groups, while the others related to particular 'ability' groups only.

  • Ganoderma is a cosmopolitan wood-rot basidiomycete that has been extensively studied for its pathogencity and medicinal properties. Identification of Ganoderma based on macro-microscopic features led to large number of synonyms which resulted in 250 taxonomic names. A Ganoderma species collected from Courtallam, Tamil Nadu was identified as G. cupreum. Phylogenetic analysis inferred from internal transcribed spacer rDNA region resolved the Indian isolate MYC1 as Ganoderma cupreum which clustered with Australian and Asian "cupreum" clade with 85% bootstrap support BS and shared 99% and 98% nucleotide similarity with Malaysian and Australian 'cupreum' respectively. This study represents the first molecular evidence of G. cupreum from Asian origin.

  • This study is designed to outline the major differences between the current radiographic programs of Korean, Australian, and the American radiographic programs. Through thorough comparison of these programs, the Korean curriculum is criticized and strategies put forth to improve the current radiographic educational curriculum which is currently employed in Korea.

  • A series of tests was performed to consider the behaviour of short composite columns under axial compressive loading, covering a range of S275 and S355 grade steel square hollow section filled with normal and high strength concrete. The interaction between the steel and the concrete component is considered and the results show that concrete shrinkage has an effect on the axial strength of the column. Comparisons between Eurocode 4, ACI-318 and the Australian Standards with the findings of this research were made. Result showed the equation used by the ACI-318 and the proposed Australian Standards gave better predication for the axial capacity of concrete filled SHS columns than the Eurocode 4.

  • International law provides for fundamental navigational rights called the right of transit passage in international straits as defined by UNCLOS. However, the Australian government published Marine Notice 8/2006 and the associated Part 54 of Australian Marine Orders which requires ships transiting the Torres Strait to engage the services of a pilot and imposes significant penalties for non-compliance on the basis of the IMO MEPC 133(53) which is just a resolution as a recommendation. This paper aims to study legal aspects in UNCLOS on the pilotage in the Torres Strait following the extension of the Great Barrier Reef PSSA neighbouring Australia.

  • The statistics of Korean Maritime Safety Tribunal and Japan Marine Accidents Inquiry Agency shows that the major muses of collision at sea are Improper lookout and Non-compliance with marine traffic rules. Those two muses are occupying more than 70% of collision, and it's clear that those muses are undoubtedly closely related to simple human error. In this paper we tried to find out the root muses of this kind of human error of OOWs(officers on watch) through risk identification method and studied how to tackle them via risk control theory. In conclusion, the measures studied in this paper could be applied to help OOWs avoid their own human error as well as be used in shipping company for their fleets' safety management.

  • Recently Australian records system is been attention in archival area. We can recognize there are two reasons in it. Because it suggested DIRKS that is a development methodology of electronic records management system and the other hands it introduced the concept of functional provenance which overcomes the previous organizational one. It has very special meaning in Korea that have high level on IT industry in the world. Korean records management system succeeded to a certain extent but still has limitation on the application of description standards or metadata standards. This paper is going to introduce DIRKS, is the one of development methodology of Australian system, and try to apply it practically. Therefore, it will be helpful to people can easily understand DIRKS and it will add more explanation for practical operation.
