Taking stock of Australia's asymmetrical relations with China: interdependence, tensions, and new dimensions

  • This article deals with the asymmetrical relations between Australia and China and explores their interdependence, tensions, and societal outlooks. Both countries are dependent on one another for trade to different degrees but attempt to diversify their supply chains. While there is no united position on China in Australia, there has been a bipartisan support for the counter-interference legislation there. The newly established security pact of the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK) and Australia - 'AUKUS' - has brought a new dimension into these tensions and will most likely lead to an arms race. The author explores how a so-called middle power such as Australia balances the related economic and strategic interests and priorities. Although Australia has been vulnerable in its asymmetric relationship with China, it has shown that it is not a passive and helpless actor when facing an economic coercion. The interdependence has become a moderating factor in this strategic stand-off. Additionally, Australia demonstrates its tendency to reinforce its traditional reliance on its previous more powerful allies, the UK and the US.

  • The distinguished feature of the economic relationship between China and Africa during the cold war is the one that there was economic point of view at all even though such a huge trade between the two countries. It was caused by purely ideological and political purpose of China. because of the giant stream of time which is called as 'the cold war', it has been replaced with other conceptions: 'aid' or 'support.' Since the end of the cold war, however, the relationship between China and Africa has been showing noticeable features; political and ideological purposes are getting less meaningful or excluded completely. In 1990, China was based on the pragmatism, which is a rigorous sense of economy, and Africa was getting popular as an emerging market, which is not only performing as a stable energy supplier but also making trade and direct investment is possible. Also, it has implications for Korea that seriously considers putting more efforts into expanding its influence on all over the trade relations which includes investment and import-export in the emerging market: Africa.

Study on Healthy Food Behavior and Recognition of Healthy Asian Food (건강 관련 식행동과 아시아의 건강음식에 대한 인식 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to research healthy food behavior and food recognition for each Asian country after subjects had visited Asian restaurants. The subjects of the study were university students from Griffith university and Queensland university, Australia. The survey was conducted from June 1 to 28, 2010. The summary of the analysis is as follows. Firstly, for dietary behavior related to healthy food, 'average' was the most common answer at 41.0% (102 respondents). Regarding the standard of selecting healthy food, 'if it is good for health' was the most common answer, regarding the reasons to like healthy food, 'because it is good for health', was the most common, and for information about healthy food, 'obtain from TV or media' was the most common. Regarding eating healthy food at home or dining out, most respondents answered 'once or twice a week', whereas regarding thinking of eating healthy food while dining out, 'average' was the most common answer. Secondly, the recognition of six Asian cuisines were ranked in the order of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Indian, and Vietnamese. Representative well-being food by country, Bibimbap of Korea, Sushi of Japan, Shark's Fin of China, Tom Yum Kung of Thailand, Curry of India and Goi Cuon of Vietnam were selected. Thirdly, regarding recognition of well-being food, disease effect factor, health-oriented factor, nutrition factor and vegetarian diet factor were extracted. We found that disease effect factor and nutrition factor had positive (+) effects on visiting Asian restaurants due to recognition of well-being foods. Therefore, it is expected that more local people will eat at Asian restaurants if the public relations for Asian restaurants emphasizes harmony between well-being food and Asian food.

  • This paper described the contents of theme entitled "Domestic Legislative Problems on the Civil Liability of Air Carrier in Korea" including the current example of fourteen countries' legislation ((1) Great Britain, (2) United States of America, (3) Canada, (4)European Union), (5) Germany, (6) France, (7) Italy, (8) Spain, (9) Swiss, (10) Australia, (11) Japan, (12) People's Republic of China, (13) Taiwan, (14) North Korea) relating to the aviation law or air transport law. Though the Korean and Japanese aviation act has provided only the public items such as (1) registration of aircraft, (2) persons engaged in aviation, (3) operation of aircraft, (4) aviation facilities including airport, (5) air transport business, (6) investigate of aircraft accidents etc., but they could not regulated the private items such as the legal relations of the air transport contract (1) air passenger ticket, (2) air luggage ticket, (3) airway bill, (4) liability of air carrier, (5) amount of compensation for damage caused by aircraft accidents, (6)jurisdiction, (7) arbitration, (8) limitation of action, (9) combined carriage, (10) carriage by air performed by an actual carrier other than contracting carrier, damage caused by aircraft to the third parties etc. in their aviation act until now. In order to solve speedily the legal problems on the limitation of air carrier's liability and long law suit and disputes between wrongdoers and survivors etc, it is necessary and desirable for us to enact a new "Draft for the Air Transport Act" including the abovementioned private items. I would like to propose personally and strongly the legislation of "Draft for the Air Transport Act" in Korea in emphasizing the importance of ensuring protection of the interests of consumers air passengers and shippers in carriage by air and the need for equitable compensation between air carriers and survivors caused by the aircraft accidents such as the German Air Transport Act (Luftverkerhrsgesetz).
