  • This study reported on the phytoplankton community and seasonal changes in the Seoul passage section and downstream in the Han River in 2012. Field samples were collected monthly from the upper (Paldang), middle (Cheongdam), and downstream(Seongsan) areas of the Seoul passage section. Water temperature, DO, pH, and conductivity were measured at each station. All environmental factors measured were recorded similarly at the three stations. The water temperature ranged from 2 to 30℃ and the dissolved oxygen ranged from 4.8 to 9.1 mg L-1, showing typical patterns of temperate regions. The phytoplankton cell concentrations ranged from 990 cells mL-1 (Paldang, December) to 2.9×104 cells mL-1 (Seongsan, March), and the chlorophyll-a content showed similar patterns to the cell numbers. The phytoplankton community was comprised of 75 genera and 95 species, including 37 diatoms, 29 Chlorophyta, 11 cyanobacteria, and two dinoflagellates. The number of species that appeared seasonally varied greatly, from nine species (Paldang, May) to 35 species (Cheongdam, December). Diatoms were the most dominant in all stations and seasons, except in summer. In contrast, chlorophytes and cyanobacteria showed sporadic high numbers in the summer and fall seasons. Four diatoms Stephanodiscus hantzschii f. tenuis, S. hantzschii, Fragilaria sp., and Aulacoseira spp., a chlorophyte Actinastrum hantzschii, and a cyanobacterium Microcystis sp. were each present in proportions greater than 10%. This study provides fundamental data from phytoplankton communities and environmental factors in the Han River for understanding water quality for long-term environmental monitoring.

  • This study was conducted to understand the phytoplankton-zooplankton trophic linkage in Lake Paldang ecosystems (Paldang Dam and Kyungan Stream) from April to December 2005. Zooplankton were filtered as two size groups (microzooplankton (MICZ): 60{\sim}20\;{\mu}m$, macrozooplankton (MACZ): >$200\;{\mu}m$), and their clearance rates and C-fluxes on phytoplankton were measured. Grazing experiments were performed in the laboratory with the different zooplankton densities (0, 2, 4, 8x of ambient density, n=2). Diatoms, such as Aulacoseira and Cyclotella were dominant phytoplankton taxa at both sites. Among phytoplankton communities, total carbon biomass of phyflagellates was much higher than others at both sites. Rotifers numerically dominated zooplankton community, while cladocerans dominated carbon biomass. Both phytoplankton and zooplankton density and biomass were high in spring, but decreased markedly after summer monsoon season. plankton biomass at Kyungan Stream was significantly higher than that of Paldang Dam. Zooplankton clearance rate and amount of C-flux were relatively high in the spring and then decreased after summer at both sites. Seasonal change of C-flux was similar to that of zooplankton biomass (P<0.001, n=7). MACZ clearance rate and C-flux were higher than those of MICZ. Water residence time and physical disturbance in summer appeared to affect zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton at the study sites. Our results indicate phytoplankton were an important energy source for zooplankton in Lake Paldang ecosystem. Furthermore, C-flux of plankton food web is affected by not only biological components but also physical parameters.

  • We conducted the weekly monitoring (December 2012~April 2013) to evaluate the temporal variation and identification of Stephanodiscus spp. that are generally dominant during winter in the Yeongsan River. Phytoplankton species were identified and counted using the optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Phytoplankton in the river were grouped into 6 classes (bacillariophyceae, chlorophyceae, cryptophyceae, cyanophyceae, dinophyceae, euglenophyceae), 30 genus and 41 species. Phytoplankton composition showed high abundance of diatoms in winter and Aulacoseira sp., Cyclotella sp. and Stephanodiscus spp. were dominant. Among the species, Stephanodiscus spp. was relatively abundant compared to other diatom species. Stephanodiscus spp. appeared from December 2012 to April 2013 and their abundance peaked in January. Abundance of diatoms especially peaked ($21,080cells\;mL^{-1}$) in January 15, 2013 when Stephanodiscus spp. also bloomed ($20,560cells\;mL^{-1}$). The abundances of Stephanodiscus spp. were gradually decreased from March and reached as low as $60cells\;mL^{-1}$ in April 26. Cyclostephanos (C. invisitatus), Cyclotella (C. meneghiniana), Discostella (D. pseudostelligera, D. woltereckii) and Stephanodiscus (S. hantzschii, S. minutulus, S. parvus) were classified in the circular diatoms. Abundance of S. hantzschii was extremely high compared to S. minutulus and S. parvus.

  • We conducted a seasonal field survey to analyze the distribution patterns of a phytoplankton community and biological oceanographic characteristics in the Geum river estuary in 2018. The results showed that the phytoplankton community consisted of 58 genera and 116 species, showing a relatively simple distribution. It was controlled by diatoms at 70.2%, a low number of species in winter and spring, and a high number in summer and autumn. The phytoplankton cell density ranged from 10.0 to 2,904.0 cells mL-1, with an average layer of 577.2 cells mL-1, which was low in autumn and high in winter. The seasonal succession of phytoplankton dominant species was mainly centric diatoms from winter to summer, including Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii, Cerataulina bergonii, and Skeletonema costatum-ls in winter, S. costatum-ls and C. bergonii in spring, and Eucampia zodiacus and Th. nordenskioeldii in summer. However, the autumn species depended upon the regions, with the inner bay dominated by the centric diatom, Aulacoseira cf. granulata, the mixed areas by S. costatum-ls, and the open sea by the dinoflagellate, Lingulodinium polyedra. According to principal component analysis (PCA), the phytoplankton community was greatly affected by the inflow and expansion of freshwater, including high nutrients, which are introduced annually through the rivermouth weir in Geum river estuary. However, the estuary, which is strongly affected by annual freshwater, was limited to areas near Geumran Island, which is adjacent to the river-mouth weir.

  • Seasonal changes of the phytoplankton and the periphyton community were investigated from August 1998 to April 1999 at five stations at the Suer stream in Kwangyang. A total of 112 species of phytoplankton were identified. Of those, the diatoms were present at all stations but the green algae, the bluegreen algae, and the dioflagellates were present at Station 4 and Station 5 more frequently than the other stations. The phytoplankton standing crops varied from 10,100 cells/1 at Station 4 in April 1999 to 1,489,100 cells/1 at Station 4 in October 1998. The seasonal variation patterns of phytoplankton standing crops were different among stations as well as the pattern of presence. The dominant species were as follows: Achnanthes minutissima, Aulacoseira distans v. alpigena, Cocconeis placentula v. lineata, Cymbella minuta, C. silesiaca, Fragilaria arcus v. recta, Peridinium cinctum, Rhizosofenia longiseta, Synedra rumpens and filamentous algae. Of those, Achnanthes minutissima, Rhizosolenia longiseta, Synedra rumpens and filamentous algae showed the highest rate of occupation in the phytoplankton standing crops during the investigated periods. A total of 99 species of periphyton were identified. Among those, the diatoms of the periphyton community were observed frequently rather than those of the phytoplankton community. The ecological indicator values showed ${\bate}$-mesosaprobous in saprobity and was close to eutraphentic in trophic state. There were no considerable differences between the ecological indicator values by planktonic diatoms and periphytic diatoms.

  • Seasonal changes of the phytoplankton community was investigated from July 2000 to April 2001 at five stations in the Imjin River. A total of phytoplankton were composed of 193 taxa, belonging to 5 divisions, 145 species, 28 varieties, 1 form, 19 unidenfitied species. Of those, the diatoms and green algae were present during the investigation periods more frequently than the other taxa. The phytoplankton standing crops varied from $89{\times}10^3\;cells/l$ at station 1 in October 2000 to $8,825{\times}10^3\;cells/l$ at station 3 in April 2001. Throughout the investigation periods, at station 1, there was low in the size of phytoplankton standing crops at large. Otherwise, at station 2, staion 3 and station 4, we could see the maximum of phytoplankton standing crops in July 2000 and then phytoplankton standing crops decreased and it reached to the minimum in January 2001, and after then, it increased again. But exceptionally, we could see the maximum of phytoplankton standing crops in April at station 3. And also, at staion 5, we could see the similar variation pattern of phytoplankton standing crops at station 2, station 3 and station 4 with a little differences in seasonal variation pattern of phytofllankton standing crops. The major dominant species were Achnanthes minutissima, Anabaena sp., Aulacoseira ambigua, A. granulata, A. granulata v. angustissima, Cymbella affinis, Cylindrotheca closterium, Diatoma vulgare, Merismopedia glauca, Stephanodiscus hantzschiif. tenuis.
